05-06 Rangers Offseason Reviews

Team: New York Rangers

Record: 44-26-12

Conference Rank: 6

Point Leaders: Jaromir Jagr 54G-69A-123P

Going into the new NHL, the Rangers were in a rebuilding phase. Which featured a younger, and hungrier team that had its star players. This team featured great chemistry and trust within themselves. It had started from training camp when they were basically sent to be marines for a few days, and they grew together fast.

For the majority of the first half of the season at, or battling for the Atlantic Division lead. Youngsters were getting ice time, and producing on both ends of the rink. Injuries werent playing much a factor. Although Weekes’ injury gave Lundqvist the torch quite early, Lundqvist shore as hell paraded with the torch earning his first career victory in the 2nd home game of the season. Other injuries included Marty Rucinsky’s sprained MCL which kept him off the ice for a month, and during this time he was averaging a point/game. The Rangers battled themselves through the season, but the season fell apart in the end.

This offseason, Glen Sather has quite some work too do. He’s gotta resign the players that had important roles this past season. Some of these players include, Martin Straka, Roszival, Dom Moore, Ortmeyer, Rucchin, Sykora and others. I think it will be really tough for Slats to bring back the majority of the team, bc i believe he wants another blue chip prospect to have a legitamate shot at making the club.

Players like Hossa, and Poti i think definetly will be brought back. Poti has shown he has improved his defensive play a ton. And he never lost his offensive upside, was just a little precatious. Hossa on the otherhand wasn’t up to par with the rest of the team all year long. Hossa, every once in awhile would have a great game, dominant with the puck, but other than a few games it seemed he didnt have his heart in it. Slats definetly has to re-sign him though, cause he’s generally a real young player, that still has the skill and potential to be a major offensive producer.

Possible aquisitions for free-agency:

Apparently Chara is at the top of Sathers wish list. The team has showed the lack of the true #1 blueliner, and Chara would definetly fill that void, but is Chara going to want to sign in NY?

Rumors about Elias coming to play with Sykora…..or could it be the otherway around, and i’m against Elias coming to new york, rather keep rucinsky….why, he’s cheaper and he can play with Jagr, and Straka can play with Sykora.

thoughts??
