#2 to the Rafters!

According to outsidethegarden.com, the date has been set for Brian Leetch’s #2 to go to the rafters of Madison Square Garden. January 24th, 2008 vs. Atlanta Thrashers.I for one am extactic that one of my favorite Rangers of all time is getting what he deserves. After the horrible way in which he was traded out of the Rangers, it is nice to know that he will be immortalized in Ranger history forever. It could be argued that Leetch was the greatest D-Man in Rangers history, and quite possibly the best North American born defensemen of all time. Congratulations Leetch.

You mean possibly the best American born defenseman of all time.

  2. eastcoasthockey says:

Can they get one more season out of him first?

    How pathetic!!

There are people on Craig's list selling tickets @ 400% over face value for this game!

Go to newyork.craigslist.org. Click on tickets and type in Leetch in the search box.

One guy is looking for up to $2500!!! per seat.

deservedly so. soon the hall beckons.

really glad i saw him play live when he was a leaf. leetch is world class.

It's about time is all I can say, Leetch was the Rangers defence for awhile at a point. Good luck outside of hockey Brian, you were no doubt one of the greatest American defencemen to play the game, but I'm sorry, Chelio's just proves to me each and every year he's more of a workhorse then you were.

Greatest North American born defenseman of all time was Ray Bourque.

My all time top 10: (my era)

      1. Ray Bourque
      2. Paul Coffey
      3. Nik Lidstrom
      4. Scott Stevens
      5. Brian Leetch
      6. Scott Niedermayer
      7. Chris Pronger
      8. Larry Murphy (disgustingly underrated)
      9. Phil Housley
    10. Chris Chelios

  7. beckfan05 says:

    Lidstrom is a Sweede.

What about that defense man that made the hall this year?

  8. senators101 says:

    He said overall.

  9. GoLeafs13 says:

Not even close to being the greatest defenceman of all time. what about Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque, Scott Niedermayer, Phil Housley. They're all 10 times better.

  10. the_word says:

I thought the best defenseman of all time was Kevin Bieksa

  11. mcpeach2 says:

housley??  I don't think so.  The other three and Chelios are above Leetch.

  12. mcpeach2 says:

Congrats to my favorite Ranger of all time!  Never liked the spotlight but its going to be on him that day.  I love watching the 94 playoffs when he was above and beyond the best player on the ice.

  13. pj1199 says:

Congras Brian. The only player that deserved it more was Mess. Now its your turn.

The only question now is when will The Rangers do the right thing and retire Adam Graves' #9.

  14. RaGsHoCkEy88 says:

i think graves will be next…

go read the article and look at the bottom it states:

"due to high amount of season subscriptions, there will be no individual tickets for sale for this game"

yea ok 18,200 season tickets my ass…looks like we'll be buying them on stubhub for over $1000

  15. wingerxxx says:

Orr, yes.  Bourque, yes.  Niedermayer, yes.  Housley???  Not even close.  Give me Leetch over Housley any day.

  16. wingerxxx says:

I think pretty much everything has been said regarding Leetch deserving his ride into the sunset.  I got my tickets last night, and it will be a great night for Rangers fans.

As for the argument about the best American defenseman of all time…pretty subjective.  Phil Housley does not deserve to be in the discussion.  I regard Housley as the American Sandis Ozolinsh.  Only without the Stanley Cup win.  Both have been kicked around by several teams.  He never won the Norris Trophy either.

When you talk about Chris Chelios and Leetch…they were such different players.  They played a very different style of hockey.  Physically, Chelios has set himself apart.  Towards the end, Leetch was not close to what he used to be, physically.  He was never built like a Ray Bourque or Chris Chelios.  In both their prime…I really don't know which of the two I'd rather have on my side, if I had to choose.  Because they both brought so much to the table.

One thing is for sure, Brian Leetch won every award and short of winning the Hart Trophy, accomplished everything in the NHL that a defenseman could accomplish.   And he carried himself with dignity and class, even during the Rangers' down years.  The Hall of Fame awaits.

“Greatest North American born defenseman of all time was Ray Bourque”

the point about lidstrom being from sweden kinda means he’s not from the overall of north america

and Stevens and/or macInnis could make that list very easily

  18. modk09 says:

what about robinson and Doug Harvey??? there are a TON of better defensmen, i think the guy just got caught up in the moment…

  19. senators101 says:

"My all time top 10: (my era)".  He's saying Ray Bourque is hte best N/A born defenseman of all time.  But I think in his list, when he says "ALL TIME" he means anyone.

  20. senators101 says:

Scott Stevens is on the list, by the way.

  21. Habfanforever says:

those are my top ten all time, from anywhere! lol

  22. Sands says:

God Bless Leetchy. You deserve it. Enjoy
