DG's Quick Hits- March 4, 2003 Edition

I know…it’s been awhile; but I’ve been busy with schoolwork so I haven’t had time for articles lately. Rest assured, though, that I’m still alive and well, though excuse me if I get a few details wrong…I’ve been out of the loop for a while.

Anyway, this week’s hits:

No “sure bets” on Deadline Day

Alfredsson defers cheques…and warms hearts

On the radar screen: Sergei and Anna, the Nashville Predators and their season ticket base, Lost Causes, Hull, the NHL and losing, and a lot more

The Maven Talks

Stan “The Maven” Fischler, from FSNY/MSGNetwork, writes some interesting stuff from around the NHL.

Will the NHL really consider shootout? ESPN Loved it!

Chris Drury appears to be the odd man out.

Adieu` Temmu?

Alexei Yashin not a good 1st line player, not a good 2nd line player, not a good 3rd line player and not a good 4th line player. What good is he?

Richter could still make it, he loves the game too much.

O’Connel to go a la Glen Sather behind the bench!?

An awesome game that could happen next season between the Edmonton Oilers, and New York Rangers with an attendance of 40,000 FANS!!!!! GREAT IDEA!!!!!!!!

Jacques Demers to Head Coach the Bruins?

According to the 24-hour sports radio station The TEAM 990 in Montreal and RDS.CA there is speculation that Robbie Ftorek will be let go very soon.

Who Says the Blues Can ONLY Acquired BurkeOsgood or Irbe?

Mario Lemieux is the only untouchable on the Pittsburgh Penguins roster, and that’s only because he’s the owner reports Dave Molinari in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Other Penguins including forwards Martin Straka, and Jan Hrdina and goalie Johan Hederg could certainly be moved before March 11th says Molinari.

Keenan misses the Big Apple

Maybe it’s Mike Keenan that the Rangers have been missing the last few years.?.?.

Preds not done?

The Fourth Period – Everyone knows the teams that are rumored to be likely to make the most noise before the trade deadline. Philadelphia, Detroit, Colorado, Toronto, Nashville…that’s right, Nashville. The Predators added Oleg Petrov from Montreal and GM David Poile is hinting there may be more to come.

“I think the way things are going for us, our club is definitely not going to be a seller at the [March 11] trade deadline. I’ll certainly be canvassing teams that are out there that have forwards available,” Poile told the Tennessean. With injuries to Andreas Johansson and David Legwand rumors are surfacing that Poile is interested in Buffalo’s Chris Gratton.

It is unclear as to whether the Sabres will trade any any of their better players before the deadline considering their ownership situation. But if Tom Golisano is very close to becoming the Sabres next owner, as some insiders suggest, its possible that the NHL office could consult him before giving the okay to a deal involving Gratton. Gratton will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, giving Buffalo the right to match any offer he receives from another team.

Method to their madness?

Everyone is shocked by the Kings stupid trade giving up yushkevich for a 7th and 4th rounder. I think there might be a little more to it than just a stupid GM.

Alfredsson defers $200,000 to make room for trade.

According to the Ottawa Sun:

Sources yesterday confirmed Alfredsson has agreed to defer $200,000 of his salary to clear money in the budget if the club wants to add a player before next Tuesday’s NHL trade deadline.

Next Bruins Coach

OK…. why does Ftorek still have a job? Don’t get me wrong, I like the guy.

Here are the top candidates for the Head Coaching job in Boston:

Habs Going Shark Fishing?? Petrov Traded

I know, I know, nothing like flogging a dead horse. But hey, it’s Trade Deadline season – anything goes.

My Take on this Situation

Action going down in March Madness

With March Madness coming up, there will be lots of action going down in the next week. Check out the latest rumors involving the Leafs, Sens, Canadiens, and more!!!

Wesley would consider Toronto.

The Fourth Period – According to the Toronto Sun, Carolina defenseman Glen Wesley appears to be willing to become a Maple Leaf. “If it arises that Toronto has some interest in me, it is something I am going to look at,” the Hurricanes defenceman said yesterday. “I think for any Canadian kid, to play in Toronto would be a thrill. I think it would be exciting for anyone to put on the Leafs uniform.”
