Canucks have acquired Derek Roy from stars for D Kevin Connauton and a 2nd rd pick.
Stars to trade Jagr
It appears the Dallas Stars have decided to trade Jaromir Jagr.
TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com reports that the Stars, who are 12th in the Western Conference, will look to move the veteran forward before Wednesday’s deadline.
Cheveldayoff says Jets can be both buyers and sellers
There has been plenty of talk about the Jets possibly moving a defenceman, but that situation might be impacted by the fact Grant Clitsome left the contest with an apparent eye injury.
“Deadlines are funny times, because you don’t know what other teams’ pressures are and what other teams objectives are. So you have to be open to explore different things,” said Cheveldayoff. “The good thing is that as an ownership group, we have owners that are committed. If the right deal does come up, I can do the things I need to do.”
Flyers in the mix of teams chasing San Jose forward Ryane Clowe
RYANE CLOWE and the San Jose Sharks have the Flyers waiting with bated breath.
Clowe, the forward the Flyers have spent the better part of the past 2 days chasing, was scratched from Monday night’s lineup by the Sharks in order to “protect the asset” in the event of a trade. An injury would have derailed the process.
As of press time for this edition, Clowe had not been traded. Check Philly.com/Sports for the latest Flyers information.
Did Roberto Luongo refuse earlier deal with Maple Leafs?
Did Roberto Luongo give the thumbs down on a potential trade to the Maple Leafs last summer?
So says Sportsnet’s Doug MacLean, who claims Luongo refused to waive his no-trade at the time in the hopes that a deal was in the works that would have reunited him with the Florida Panthers, the team he broke into the NHL with.
According to MacLean, a tentative off-season deal for Luongo was in place at the time between the Leafs and Canucks.
Nieuwendyk must ponder all of his available trade options

To be fair to Nieuwendyk, he didn’t always have choices in past seasons. Brad Richards had a no-trade clause and was hurt. Nieuwendyk didn’t like the offers for Steve Ott and Mike Ribeiro at the time. He dealt Nicklas Grossmann to add a second- and third-round draft pick last year. Eventually, he moved Ott and Ribeiro and Grossmann and Mark Fistric, so he definitely got something in return. But could he have received more if he would have unloaded Mike Modano in 2009 or 2010? Could he have parlayed Richards into a big return had he started earlier and pushed harder for that move? Could he have gotten something for Sheldon Souray or added a bevy of picks by dealing Adam Burish or Tom Wandell or Vern Fiddler or Stephane Robidas?
Did he miss the boat on some potential deals?
It’s fair to ask those questions.
This time, it seems the decision has been made for Nieuwendyk. The Stars are 16-16-3, good for 35 points. They likely need to get 54 points just to be in the mix for eighth place in the West. If they went 9-3-1 in the final 13 games, they would get exactly 54 points. The problem is they don’t have that winning streak written anywhere on them. Even if the team is fully healthy and playing its best, there’s a real chance it can’t play at that level.
So armed with that information, Nieuwendyk must ponder trades for Jaromir Jagr and Derek Roy and Eric Nystrom (who can each become an unrestricted free agent in the summer), and he might even have to listen to offers for Stephane Robidas. In fact, he needs to listen to every offer, because you don’t know what might be out there. Would Ottawa give up Plano native Stefan Noesen? Would Detroit part with Calle Jankrok or Riley Sheahan? Would Chicago let you have Brandon Pirri or Mark McNeill?
Odds are Richards or Marian Gaborik will not be back
Included in that evaluation must be whether John Tortorella is still the right coach for this group or whether his message has gone stale. Brad Richards, a shell of his former All-Star self this season, must also occupy the organizational thoughts. The Rangers have one more amnesty buyout available, and Richards, 32, counts $6.667 million against the annual salary cap through 2020.
Rumblings: Could Kiprusoff go to Toronto?
Interesting news Monday evening with a source confirming to ESPN.com that the Calgary Flames have given permission to the Toronto Maple Leafs to speak to Miikka Kiprusoff’s camp about a contract extension.
My TSN colleague Aaron Ward was first to report the news.
Kiprusoff has one more year on his deal next season, which pays only $1.5 million (although it counts $5.8 million against the salary cap), and the suspicion here is that the 36-year-old netminder would sign off on a trade to Toronto only if he can get another year out of it financially.
GM’s quiet as trade deadline approaches
The trade market isn’t overflowing with top-flight talent that could be available but there are possibilities. Washington’s Mike Ribeiro, who knows the conference after several years with Dallas, tops the list if he doesn’t sign a contract extension.
Dallas center Derek Roy can also become an unrestricted free agent in July but the Stars might hold onto him, especially with three consecutive games against the Ducks beginning Monday night. Toronto seems playoff-bound and could keep Tyler Bozak.
