Montreal Scouting the Avalanche

Just one Eastern NHL team scouting the Avs-Panthers game tonight…

And that team is the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs have really been scouting the Avs heavily this season, despite only having one more game with them this season. Do they want those two points that bad? Or are they scouting Avs players for a possible trade pitch? I think it’s the latter. Names they are looking at? Probably Paul Stastny at No. 1, followed by John Mitchell at No. 2.

What do you like best in a game

Leafs were offered a few major-league centres

The Leafs were offered a few major-league centres in their dealings before settling on Anaheim’s Peter Holland. The reason they didn’t trade for a veteran third- or fourth-line guy was because they felt there was no upside in doing so. With Holland, a first-round pick in both the OHL and NHL drafts, there is a belief he could become something. He has size and a good shot. Now it’s up to him …

Who is stud defenceman the Edmonton Oilers should go after?

When Edmonton Oilers’ GM Craig MacTavish says he’d love “a stud defenceman”, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know who he means. Gimme a W, gimme an E, gimme a B, gimme an E, gimme an R.

That would be Shea Weber. One of the three or four best defencemen in the game, even if he’s having a pedestrian season (minus 8, eight points, 26 1/2 minutes a game) by his standards in Nashville.

Pat LaFontaine willing to move Ryan Miller before hiring GM

Pat LaFontaine has only been in his new role as president of hockey operations for the Buffalo Sabres a few days, but he’s already thinking of how he’ll improve the club. The biggest item on his to-do list is hiring a new general manager, but there’s work to be done in the interim.

Among the biggest decisions on the player personnel side is what to do with Ryan Miller. The star goaltender is due to become a free agent at the end of the season and is unlikely to want to be part of a rebuild in Buffalo, which could take some time.

Leafs Trade Today

Did Campbell say that he wanted to be in Chicago too

Versteeg went on WGN radio in Chicago this morning and not only said he hoped former Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell would eventually follow him to the Second City, but that other teammates sounded a little jealous in their text messages to him.

Campbell said he never mentioned to Versteeg that he wanted to be in Chicago.

Hearing trade is a possibility for Del Zotto

LEAFS ACQUIRE HOLLAND, STAUBITZ FROM DUCKS FOR BLACKER, PICKS

Forwards Peter Holland and Brad Staubitz were sent to Toronto on Saturday as the Maple Leafs traded defenceman Jesse Blacker and draft picks to the Anaheim Ducks.

Holland, a centre, will report to the Maple Leafs and Staubitz has been assigned to the American Hockey League’s Marlies.

Tallon vows to stay aggressive after Versteeg trade: ‘I’m not happy where the team is’

On Thursday night, Panthers GM Dale Tallon made waves by sending Kris Versteeg back to Chicago in exchange for prospects Jimmy Hayes and Dylan Olsen.

Apparently, there are more waves to come.

Subban earns his keep with the Canadiens

The Tampa game, a shootout loss for the Habs, illustrated why Subban is a unique commodity: no other defenceman brings quite the same combination of rise-out-of-your-seat offensive dynamism, punishing physicality and defensive intelligence.

Here are three players who, some way, some how, might help Tampa skate through a tough spot.

Mike Cammalleri

With seven goals in 10 games this year, Cammalleri is off to a fantastic start after missing seven contests with a hand injury. A pending unrestricted free agent this summer, Cammalleri, at 31, doesn’t figure to stick around for the Flames’ rebuild, but will be a major bargaining chip if Calgary puts him in play. That means he won’t come cheap.
