There will be a lot of forward thinking at this year’s NHL trade deadline because there is no shortage of wingers and centres available.
But, for the market to shake loose, it seems either Winnipeg Jets captain Andrew Ladd or Boston Bruins scorer Loui Eriksson has to get moved so that the contenders can turn their attention elsewhere.
Dan Hamhuis’s trade status is a riddle he’s not yet solved
The Canucks would love an Antoine Vermette scenario. The centre was dealt by Arizona to Chicago a day before the 2015 trade deadline for a first-round pick and defenceman Klas Dahlbeck. The 33-year-old Vermette won a Stanley Cup and then re-signed with the Coyotes for two years at $3.75 million annually. He didn’t get a pay hike, but he got a no-movement clause.

So, if Chicago, for example, want to add a huge salary such as Eric Staal’s (from Carolina), the Blackhawks could ship Bryan Bickell’s $4-million deal to Toronto in order to create the necessary cap space. The Leafs would also get a high draft pick or a worthwhile prospect for their largesse.

In fact, there are at least four pending UFAs whose price tag might require a first in order to pry them away from their current clubs: Loui Eriksson, Andrew Ladd, Eric Staal and Mikkel Boedker.

The Blueshirts perhaps would be able to get the Stars’ immensely talented 20-year-old winger Valeri Nichushkin as part of the return package. Such a possibility would surely tempt Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton.
Jets getting offers on Ladd
An interesting report from Gary Lawless that the Winnipeg Jets have already received an offer of a first-round pick and a prospect for Ladd, and the trade market appears to be shaping up for the Bruins to get a very good return for Eriksson, who is red-hot and on pace for 29 goals and 64 points this season.
