Penguins still looking to add before trade deadline

A playoff spot is hardly assured to the Pittsburgh Penguins, but, as currently constructed, they are all-in.

And if they get in, who knows in this parity-filled league — particularly the Eastern Conference — how far they just might get.

Leafs’ Polak, Reimer know they could be moved before trade deadline

The Maple Leafs defenceman knows that many National Hockey League observers figure he will be dealt on Feb. 29, the day of the NHL’s trade deadline.

Polak isn’t inclined to disagree. In fact, he has had the idea in the back of his mind since last summer.

Is Dion Phaneuf the man to inspire Ottawa Senators to the postseason?

The Ottawa Senators have struggled to build any serious momentum throughout the opening stages of the season and really needed to make some form of change in order to get their season back on track.

While there weren’t many calls for a managerial switch-up, a trade was welcomed and the Senators managed to acquire experienced defenseman Dion Phaneuf from the Toronto Maple Leafs as part of a five-man switch. Not only are the Ottawa fans excited to see just what he can do on the ice but his gritty determination and desire to win should have a positive effect on the entire locker room.

Would the Hawks look at trading Teravainen

When the Hawks arrive in New York for Wednesday’s game against the Rangers, they could be asked about a report speculating about a Shaw trade. They might even hear rumors about a certain Finnish forward, whose biggest move should be to the top line.

For anyone to overreact to a tough stretch for Teravainen would be rash. For the Hawks to consider trading Teravainen for a more proven veteran would be reckless — and eventually regrettable.

“I try not to think about that at all,” Teravainen said. “I just try to think about us winning the Cup again this year.”

Could the Anaheim Ducks peddle a young defenceman for short-term forward depth?

Would the Anaheim Ducks, absolutely loaded with young defencemen in their organization, deal one of them for an obvious rental forward — Winnipeg Jets’ captain Andrew Ladd — to play in their Top 6?

The Ducks had five defencemen aged 25 and under dressed against the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday night — Hampus Lindholm, Cam Fowler, Sam Vatanen, Josh Manson and Simon Despres.

LADD NOW THE NAME?

Now that Steven Stamkos is no longer in play heading into the Feb. 29 trade deadline, does Andrew Ladd become the biggest name who possibly might be moved?

If the Capitals make a move at the trade deadline, what would it be?

It’s more likely Washington is in the market for a depth defenseman. Brooks Orpik has missed 40 games with a lower-body bone injury, but he could be back in the lineup when the Capitals play the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.

Can’t understand White/Chabot being untouchable

TSN Hockey’s Trade Bait List

With the NHL’s trade deadline approaching, check out TSN Hockey’s Top 10 players most likely to be dealt by 3pm et on Monday, Feb. 29.

Goalie Andersen could be trade bait for Ducks

Frederik Andersen could be the everyday starting goalie for a number of NHL teams. He was that for the Ducks last season and he could still become the one they lean on.

But when it comes to the upcoming trade deadline, Andersen is also one of their most attractive pieces to dangle if they want to seriously look in that direction with the mild-mannered netminder.

Andersen is wrapping up a two-year contract that’s paying him $1.3 million this season. It has been a remarkably affordable deal for the Ducks but that’s going to change as his next contract will easily be worth more.

Burrows denies report he’s willing to waive no-trade clause

With the Feb. 29 trade deadline nearing, and the franchise in a retool-on-the-fly mode, the fact Burrows is 34 and has a year left on his contract at a $4.5-million US salary-cap hit made the Saturday report by Hockey Night in Canada insider Elliotte Friedman thought-provoking.

As deadline nears, Blackhawks have holes to fill, questions to answer

A little less than three weeks ago, Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said it was difficult to get a feel for who might be available at the Feb. 29 trade deadline because of how many teams were on the playoff bubble.

“The biggest thing is, you’re not quite sure what’s available around the league,” Bowman said. “At this point, there’s a lot of clustering in the standings. And in order for trades to happen you have to have teams that are willing to look toward next year.”
