i just took a quick look at maras stats from this season and last.. seem to be much more attractive than wards.  does anyone know what type of player mara is?

Not bad, Mara's value is lost when he is not on the powerplay or helping offensively. He is similar to Brad Stuart in that he sporadically displays offense, sporadically plays physical but routinely makes costly mistakes. Too bad, local kid and he seemed to be excited about being in Boston. Also will not be forgotten for stepping up and fighting at a time of the season when the B's were at their worst and no one was showing heart. Best of luck to Paul, probably a good trade for both Mara and the B's…Ward will add another steady presence on the blueline who will be better in his own zone then Mara was. I would love to see the B's get Horton (Toivenen & Lashoff) and/or Seabrook (Krecji, J. Sigalet, 2nd rounder)

Mara is aweful. He is big and seems to be quite tough. However he is lost in his own zone, and truely costed Boston defensively. I think Stuart and Mara costed Boston a lot this year in terms of defensive play.
He could maybe be a power play specialist but not good in my opinion.

Decent trade for both teams. Mara had an abysmal year with Boston but came off a career year in Phoenix. Boston picked up a PP quarterback with Dennis Wideman in the Boyes trade so they addressed their PK with Aaron Ward. Slight edge to Beantown in this trade but rumor has it there was tension between Jagr and Ward in the dressing room so they had to unload him.

Ward is not the defensive asset that everyone thinks he is. After watching Ward for the entire season he is a 5th defenseman. This is sort of like the Rangers admitting they should have resigned Poti over Ward, since Mara is in the same mold as Poti.
