Aebischer and Souray to be leaving?

Rumors out of Montreal this week are saying that a trade involving Montreal goaltender David Aebischer and D-man Sheldon Souray is in the making. Some say that a deal will be made with a team located in the south-west of the United-States. Now, this makes sence for a few reasons.

First, the recent play of Cristobal Huet makes the ex-Avalanche netminder the obvious back-up in Montreal. He has more than once expressed his wish to be a number one goalie in the NHL and this trade could let it happen for him. A team like Columbus might be interested in his services since both Leclaire and Norrena have been less than great this year, granted that the ‘Coats’ are having a hard time putting a constant effort on the ice night-in, night-out.

As for Souray, constant rumors had him move last season to get closer to his family in California. This would actually be a great time for the Habs to move him considering his is actually worth something this season. He leads all NHL D-men in goals scored and isn’t as much of a liability in his defensive zone as he has been in the past few years. Also, needless to say that he is an outstanding marksman on the powerplay and arguably has the hardest slapper in the game (as displayed during the last all-star game). This being said, he his still far from a constant top 2 D-Man on any team so don’t rant at me for saying he is good standing practicly still on the blue-line.

Also, having 8 NHL defensemen in their lineup, like said in a previous HTR.com article, means that the Habs have some room to wiggle on the blue-line. They could use this bait to get their second-line center they’ve been dying for and maybe a young goalie or a 2-3 round pick since we can all agree that Yann Danis is waisting his time in Hamilton with an average team.
