Alexei Yashin still deciding on future

The 37-year-old former captain said today he’s just “enjoying skating with the guys” and hasn’t settled on plans for next season.

Yashin has been working out at IceWorks with nearly the entire Islanders veteran roster for the past few weeks and did so again today after attending last night’s rookie game at the Coliseum, where he sat for two periods with owner Charles Wang and GM Garth Snow.

“I have a free night and I want to see the young kids play, so I went to watch the game,” he said, adding that Snow and Wang didn’t discuss a possible training camp invite.

“I like just keeping myself in shape for now,” said Yashin, who spent the last four seasons in the KHL after the Islanders bought out his contract following the 2006-07 season. The Islanders are still charged $2.204 million against the salary cap for Yashin’s buyout.

The Islanders have extended some training camp invites to unsigned veterans, mostly on defense now that forward Jay Pandolfo accepted an invitation. Former Islander and Ranger Bryan McCabe is believed to be among the invitees, but no one besides Pandolfo has accepted with veterans reporting for physicals on Friday.

Yashin said he’d skate with the Isles tomorrow and Thursday and see what happens after that.
