And That's A Rap! – The Leaving Leafs

Nik Antropov’s time in Toronto has come to an end and he has been traded to the New York Rangers for a 2nd round pick & a conditional pick.

Dominic Moore has also been sent to the Buffalo Sabres for a 2nd round pick.

The 29-year old Antropov is in the final year of a two-year contract and is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. The native of Kazakhstan played his entire nine-year career with the Leafs after being selected 10th overall by the club in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

While 28-year old Moore was also in the final year of his 1-year 900k deal. Moore is having a career year with 12-goals and 41-assists.

The deals came after the Leafs placed Vesa Toskala on the IR for the remainder of the year and then claimed Martin Gerber off re-entry waivers from the Ottawa Senators & defenseman Erik Reitz from the NY Rangers.

Experts Look: I think these were solid moves made by General Manager – Brian Burke. Yes, there are some fans wondering “why bother with Gerber”? but the reality is with Toskala now out for the year, Gerber and Joseph will split the goaltending duties to keep the team respectable for paying ticket-holders. And sure there are those fans who wanted more names gone or higher assets acquired but in reality this was a solid return for two players who are labeled as an underachiever/overachiever. There were rumblings that the Leafs were looking to see what they could get for Gerber after claiming him and some sources reported there was a deal close with the Nashville Predators regarding Alexei Ponikarovsky. So with the “should’ve, could’ve, would’ve” aside, the positives are the Leafs have now again dumped older player roster spots/salaries, acquired high draft picks and still have assets they can deal come “draft day“. And who knows, maybe todays discussions have opened the door to something else that can be explored. Either way, the re-building will continue!

The Habs will tear the Flyers apart in the playoffs. Carcillo is an overrated goon. They traded Upshall for him. Upshall is way better. Carcillo sucks like Antropov. Almost. That's my unbiased rating of this bad trade by Phillie.

You speak the truth always. The Laughs are the big losers today. Its easy to see. The Habs already made their great moves, they didn't need to get even more talent. The Laughs are going nowhere again. Maple Saps forever.

  3. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

" I don't really care about last year's market value"

and thats why we ignored you. because you don't get it.

Is 1 month and the playoffs of Antropov worth 6 years of a guy drafted in the 1st round?? Long term, no way. But thats NOT what its about. Its about the MARKET, and we based our estimations of the market of the last few years which has been a buying freak show. This year completely calmed down, and thus out predictions were out of whack (lets be honest, Guerin for a 5th!).

Damien Cox called it last night, but other than that few of us  saw this coming.

  4. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

"The argument between me and BlueandWhite was that Antropov wouldn't be the best forward dealt at the deadline or that he would fetch a 1st rounder"

NO, it was that antropov MAY be the best forward to go ASSUMING guys like Jokinen stay put (which was a safe assumption at the time). I wasn't pumping antropov, I was commenting on parity. YOU turned it into an argument and have been misquoting me since.

  5. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

You know what kills me. The habs have vitually no size up front, and it shows…big time. Antropov would have done wonders for the habs 5 on 5,

  6. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

Were you that kid in kindergarten who picked the wings off flies….

  7. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

I think Leaf fans have a number of reasons to 'hope' the rangers do well.

    A. Antropov, dont need to explain
    B. $$$, the Rangers share the leafs predicament of having tones of cash and being restricted by the poor man salary cap (plus paying millions into stupid revenue sharing). The Rangers should be able to spend the few extra dollars to get the big name they needed.
    C. the conditional pick may be higher

on the downside the value of the 2nd is decreased the deeper they go, but still….

  8. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

Yes, judging from your account names and comments, I can see a wealth of intelligence shared by only you and plekanecs. Neither of you understand trade market dynamics whatsoever, but you both 'get it' right?

I means whats 6'6, 21 goals, 46 points good for anyway? I mean ok it DOES vault him into the Rangers leaser in goals…but whatever….

  9. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

Ok, and guess who Leads all Rangers in goals, and is 2nd in points….

    Nik Antropov

  10. Rico420 says:

let's not forget borderline bigotry and homophobic comments that I find absolutely offensive.

  11. LeafsNation91 says:

Yeah, the Habs need to make the playoffs first. You just got spanked 5-1 to Buffalo.

  12. LeafsNation91 says:

Haha, Habs got SPANKED 5-1 to struggling Buffalo. Gaustad was amazing in that game, and his grit could lead the Sabres into the playoffs and deep into it.

Why can't the Leafs lose like the Habs? We would be farther down.
Habs fans say we overvalue our players, they do the same, and overvauled ONE season.
  13. KingCanada says:

I wouldnt say we brought in Kolzig or Heward…there both UFA and on LTIR..Not to mention Rogers sucks and theres another couple dozen of those defencemen available.

We basically bought that 4th round pick lol.

  14. reinjosh says:

carcillo had more goals then upshall did last year
and montreal is going to miss the playoffs the way they keep playing
    they barely have any grit
they have barely anyone who has enough heart to play
and if they play the capitals or the flyers they are going to be ripped to shreds
they have very little chance of making it past the first round

  15. HabsMakeYouWhine says:

''Gaustad was amazing in that game, and his grit could lead the sabres into the playoff and deep into it…HAHAHAHAHA anyway yes we got owned tonight so what, cant wait to see the leafs destroy again and again, its normal i hate the leafs u hate the habs, but with the number of post i saw u posting or article or whatever,u will always be that retard

  16. reinjosh says:

    no they didnt
    i was watching it too
and they said their was a report out their from someone else
    about the apparent poni trade
but they said it was false

  17. LeafsNation91 says:

And the same with you, congragulations!

  18. LeafsNation91 says:

And the Habs streak has started…It's not getting any brighter

  19. mojo19 says:

I still can't *****ing find it!

  20. mojo19 says:

salary move ya. But theoretically we have Kolzig negotiation rights, so if he doesnt want to retire, which he probably will, he could maybe be a back up next year to replace Joseph who will definitely retire. Zilla won't want much money so, could be an option.

  21. mojo19 says:

Ya Reitz was called a "solid AHL defenceman" by Gord Stellick, so he'll probably just be like a guy to call up here and there if you want a different type of player than Sifers.

  22. mojo19 says:

Ya I still don't know the conditions of this conditional pick? How high of a pick could it be. If Antropov takes the Rags to the final 4 could it be a 1st round pick?

  23. mojo19 says:

Nik Antropov is my all time favourite Ranger.

  24. Kyleton says:

Gerber claim is simple.  Cujo is basically done, and there was potential for Burke to move alot more talent then he actually did at the deadline, which means you do not want to subject a prospect goalie to blow outs every night. Ad d that to the fact that if the guys in front have more confidence in the guy between the pipes they will concentrate on their games which means the young guys will develop better.

  25. Kyleton says:

What i have heard but not confirmed is that the conditional pick is for 2010 and is either a 3rd or 4th rounder.  Its a 3rd if NYR makes the playoffs this year, a 4th if they do not.

  26. Kyleton says:

I hope thats what happens… I like Mitchell.

  27. Kyleton says:

i heard its a 3rd if the rangers make the playoffs this year, a 4th if not… both in 2010… Not confirmed on major sites though.

  28. mojo19 says:

Antropov is a pretty amazing player. Consider this, fans of other teams create usernames dedicated to Antropov. Almost like how a Flyers fan would make an anti-Crosby username, Habs fans make Anti-Antropov usernames. You don't do that for average players like Ponikarovsky or Ottawa's Mike Fischer, you do it for the stars like Kovalev, Antropov, in the past Mats Sundin etc.

Your name is ironically a testiment to Antropov's strong play.

Now here's hoping we can bring him back in the summer, I'd offer up 4 years $16-18 million range. Or 5 years no more than $20 million.

  29. Kyleton says:

TSN actually put out a report about Smyth signing also, I believe it was mckenzie who then got back on the phones and corrected himself.

  30. Kyleton says:

Not a bad day for the leafs.  Burke wanted picks he got picks.

I always thought Antropov's max return would be a first rounder if teams got desperate. They didn't and Burke still got a decent return in a 2nd rounder, and a conditional one. ( i heard its in 2010 and is either a 3rd or 4th based on the rangers making the playoffs this year.) So not a bad move for a guy that was only going to play another 18 games for them.

Moore deal also is good. Another second rounder that will help in drafting or traded up in the draft. Moore wants too much money and had too much potential to leave the team so a second for another player likely to only play 18 more games with the team.  Hopefully Moore does not get what he is asking for and comes back to Burke and accepts his offer to resign once he's a UFA.

The Tampa deal is basically this.  Burke helps Tampa financially saving them half a mil in salaries in exchange for a 4th rounder.  Not bad.  500k for a pick.

Gerber pick up is very smart as it will keep the team competitive in all games so the teams young players don't  have their development stunted by getting smashed everynight.  Don't worry folks. Pogge will get called up as per Wilson's plans to get him games for experience.  You don't want to toss him to the wolves completely.

Now though here is the best part of the deadline for the leafs……

Now, truthfully this best thing could turn into a bad thing as I still expect Kaberle to be traded and want it to happen, but I want it to be on Draft day.  He is the perfect player to move on draft day for the highest return.  Why? He's got a great contract, that teams can manage. He can be traded anywhere then. And GM's will feel more comfortable adding him as the have all summer to make moves to fit him in both cap wise and roster wise.

The same goes for Kubina but i think the leafs will keep him.

whatever gaynation91,i know u must be a pre adoslencent or a adolescent just go back see ur friend in the air canada center thats seems to be the only place where the ppl love u ,i mean the other frustrates adoslescent

  32. LeafsNation91 says:

What? You call me an adolescent? You have the grammar of a child in grade 4!

When you result in name calling, and acting like a child, you know you have nothing good to say, nor no one believes anything you say is actually valid.
Goods job, you just make yourself look stupid.
  33. LeafsNation91 says:

Alot of English Canadians still do.

Did Quebec ever give English Canadians a chance to doubt?

When I was watching Montreal Impact play the team from Mexico, I saw all Quebec flags, not one Canadian flag. You will never see that in Toronto or even Vanocuver, its all about being proud of Canada, its disrespectful to Canadians(English).

  34. greatlife15 says:

Are you Canadian or are you a Quebecois? We're CANADIAN. We support our country and the Francophones should do the same and support Canada and not just Quebec.

  35. TML51 says:

Well, Burke said it wouldn't be huge, and he stayed true to his word.

He added picks and re affirmed that the Leafs are rebuilding…exactly what he said he'd do.  This is not going to be an overnight solution…it will be a few years before the Leafs are in any position to make waves in the NHL.  There will be another sell of next year, and more picks added…he's far from done.

What remains to be seen is if Kaberle and/or Kubina get traded this summer, and what the Leafs get for them.

It's been 42 years…and it will likely be a few more before we see a cup.  All we can do is be patient…hell, we've waited this long!!

  36. cam7777 says:

are you like 7 years old?  or what exactly is your problem?

  37. assman says:

the leafs kick more ass. capital ass this time. i told every body, but no body beleives me. all week I been reading only negitive shit. No body says any thing good. the leafs are gonna kick every bodies ass in the playoffs, and then we're gonna kick bostons ass. chara will remember the dark days, with the sens. stop writing negitive diarrea about the leafs. this team can win the cup. most teams in the east blow hard.

  38. LeafsLegacy says:

LOL, not only did Montreal get owned.. so did he! XD

  39. LeafsLegacy says:

LOL Leafs wont even make the playoffs

  40. LeafsLegacy says:

Man don't know what Burke was thinking when he got Kolzig, was probably a salary dump but still, Leafs now have 4 NHL goaltenders under cap, 2 of which will return next season :S… Is Cujo done after this year? Cause wow, at first it seemed we needed goaltending now we have to much lol

  41. HabsMakeYouWhine says:
