Another 1st Round Exit?

The New York Islanders have been knocked out of the NHL playoffs, in the first round, the past two seasons. Many people feel it will happen for a third straight season this year.

It`s pretty much safe to say, the Islanders aren`t a Stanley Cup Team this year. Sure they added Miro Satan and Alexei Zhitnik in the off-season, but they got rid of their captain, arguably one of the best in the game, Mike Peca.

Peca helped get the Isles into the playoffs after years of horrible play. Peca helped re-shape and get rid of the “Islanders Bad Name”. Mike Peca was one of the big reasons why the Islanders have been a better team these past few years.

Not only did the Islanders send away their team captain, but they failed to re-sign Adrian Aucoin, Roman Hamrlik, Kenny Jonsson and Dave Scatchard. These three guys were also keys to the Islanders success in getting into the playoffs.

Sure, GM Mike Milbury brought in Mike York, Brad Lukowich, Brent Sopel, and Alexei Zhitnik to fill these holes. But it`s not an improvement. Or at least not enough to get past the first round of the playoffs.

Yes, Miro Satan is now on the island to help Yashin get his game back on track. But bottom line is that the Islanders this year is still not good enough to get to the Stanley Cup. If you look at the team roster on paper, it just does not look good enough to be the best team in the NHL.

It`s not too late to make changes to this roster. There`s ways to turn this into a Stanley Cup Team. Goaltending is a big part in team success, and the Islanders have a ton of it, in Rick DiPietro. I feel if the Islanders want to make it past the first round of the playoffs and even as far as the Stanley Cup, Mike Milbury should make moves like this:

1) Trade for a big name forward to play with Yashin and Satan. Players such as: Ziggy Palffy, Martin Havlat, or even Alex Mogilny.

For one of these guys, Milbury should package Kvasha and a prospect and/or draft pick.

2) Trade for a stay at home, hard-hitting, defensman. Brendan Witt would do just fine.

There`s been plenty of rumors surrounding the Isles wanting to send Niinimaa packing. Obviously a trade like Niinimaa for Witt would be very good.

3) Fire Steve Stirling. Stirling is a horrible coach. He`s not as vocal as many other NHL coaches. He never disciplines his players. All he`s done was get the Islanders` farm team to a championship. The AHL is nothing to write home about. Coaching an NHL team and an AHL team are two completely different things. One of the biggest mistakes Mike Milbury has ever made was firing Peter Laviolette. Look at what Peter`s doing in Carolina. Enough said.

Making these changes to the Islanders roster isn`t asking for much. It`s VERY do-able. It gives the Islanders a very explosive 1st line, grit, and leadership. If Mike Milbury could do just that, the roster would look much better. It would look more like a Stanley Cup Team.

Well i have not seen that much of the Rangers and Islanders so i can’t compare most of the players this year but Blake is the one guy who sticks out for the Islanders every game and since i watch all the Wings and Sens games i’ve seen the Islanders twice but the Rangers i’ve only watched parts of game in between other games since i have the centre ice package so i’m not really sure if the Rangers are for real but it seems like they might be

Maybe you gusy should bring back Marius, lol, what a flop, and everyone knew he would be!! lol, Islanders are a joke, and have been for a long time now. Since Milbury has had the reigns, thye have made the dumbest moves in history, and almost made another one, 15 year contract, what the hell is that for De Pietro? The only thing i see in the Islanders future is a lot more waiting for the next dumb move.

You were much better when you were hiding, you know-nothing.

I’d rather be playing “over your heads” than redifining the term “mediocrity.”

  4. GretzNYR99 says:

HAHA, BlueOrangeWhite and the_expert_44 are the worst.

They know nothing, and just make non-sense of things. They’re both fairweather too, they run and hide when their team does crappy.

Who really knows any more. For the last 7 years the Rangers had as good a team on paper as any team in the league… How did they do? This year the Rangers had the worst team on paper and picked by SI to have the worst record in hockey… How are the Rangers doing this year??? The more I think about it… Dipeatro (?-spelling) is the key to the Islanders success. If the Islanders get good goaltending and Yashin is able to play with the players around him??? Anything can happen? I just dont know anymore! Anyone who tells you they know is trying to sell you something or is just disillusioned?

like all ranger fans have had to every year except 1940, and 94 (11 yrs ago), you will eat those words in april.

the rangers will NOT make the playoffs, and they will finish BEHIND the isles!

The slow start this season shouldn’t be too much of a stunner, considering what has happened to the Islanders’ blueline. The Big Four is gone, and has been replaced by guys that are a downgrade in every respect. Zhitnik for Aucoin is almost a wash, but I would take Aucoin over him. Aucoin has more of a nose on the power play. Sopel has been used in an offensive role for most of his career, and is not the all-around guy that Kenny Jonsson was. Lukowich is fine at doing his job in his own end, but again, is not as good an all-around defender as Roman Hamrlik. It’s all simply too much of a downgrade. Niniimaa needs to go back to the Western Conference. Definitely needs a change of scenery. He is still a good skater and has good tools.

Yashin does not need to play with another scorer. If anything, keeping Blake on his line is the best thing to do. Someone on Yashin’s line needs to do the dirty work, and it sure as heck would not be someone like Alex Mogilny or Palffy. They do need some secondary scoring though, as York has not been scoring goals, although has been playing hard. I don’t know what is going on with Trent Hunter…they needed him to step it up this year. Parrish is having a Mark Parrish kind of year. Nothing outstanding, but nothing terrible either. I have no idea of what they could get for Oleg Kvasha. I’ve never been high on him. If Milbury hasn’t been canned by now, I don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon. Although he certainly deserves it. He gets mulligans for some deals he has made in the past, because they were for paring down salary under the previous ownership, but he’s made some awful ones as well. The only truly outstanding thing he has done was pick up Aucoin a few years ago, for almost nothing. It took him 4 years to realize that Yashin needed a true scorer to play with. McEachern might not be too bad of an addition. Losing Jonsson on the blueline, I think was a big hit. Not the greatest offensive force there ever was, but he was extremely reliable and consistent. They need to try and bring him back.

  9. BlueOrangeWhite says:

i pretty much agree with everything this guy said except:

“Losing Jonsson on the blueline, I think was a big hit. Not the greatest offensive force there ever was, but he was extremely reliable and consistent. They need to try and bring him back.”.

they should try hunter on the first line to get him going.

they over play dipietro. snow should be playing a bit more than he does.

    stirling needs to be fired.

  10. GretzNYR99 says:

’28 and ’36 as well, learn how to count, you tool.

I won’t be eating my words, you can’t beat anyone in the division. You got Weekes coming off of a groin injury in his first start back, and you couldn’t beat us afterwards.

At least I was ALIVE for my team’s last Stanley Cup win, I was there as well.

You’re just a fair-weather, know-nothing. Go back into hiding and blame your team’s ownership for it again.

  11. GretzNYR99 says:

    ’33, not ’36, sorry.

  12. BlueOrangeWhite says:

RE: YOU BEING “Alive” and “there” in ’94 —

i was not only alive. but i was at the first isles/ranger game evr in 1972. i have the program here 5 ft away on a shelf. and i was THERE for all 3 isles home cup wins in the 80’s.

now who’s the “fair weather- tool”???

  13. GretzNYR99 says:

If you could actually spell, I’d believe you. And if that is the case, the fact that you’re 40 something years old arguing hockey in a forum online is pathetic. I wouldn’t have the time to do this at such an age. Maybe it’s because you’re still living in your parents’ basement, but who knows. You act, and have the hockey knowledge of a teenager, I wouldn’t believe you for a second.

As for the “fair-weather tool,” anyone who justifies abandoning their team deserves to be shot, and that’s what you “Islander fans” did. I can’t even call you people real fans, you’re jokes, poor excuses of jokes at that.

11 years ago, buddy, I’m 20 now. Not too hard to be alive. I was about 9. I’ve been playing hockey since I was about 7 years old.

You know what’s really hard to believe? That a 40 something year old guy can’t spell basic words such as “ever,” and “feet,” and has the English and grammar skills of a 10 year old.

  14. GretzNYR99 says:

HAHAHHAHAHA, you really are a joke. A big running joke.

You make it harder and harder to believe that you were “alive and there” for the first Ranger/Islander game in 72, and their 3 home cups wins.

  15. BlueOrangeWhite says:

yeah it hard to belive that a 37 yr old guy who owns his own companies and can do whatever he wants on the net would have time to type this stuff. or possibly be typing so fast he accidentally left out some letters.

    i repeat i was there.

i was there against atlanta in the first ever isles game, and the second one, which was against the rangers.

i was there when we beat philly at home in an afternoon game. i was there when we beat minn the next year, watched on tv when we beat vanc, and was there again when we beat the first time, and lost the secnd year to edmonton.

that’s how “fair weather” i’ve been.

i’ve been to more isles games over more years, that you will be for the rangers in your LIFETIME.

  16. BlueOrangeWhite says:

marius has not flopped in toronto. he simply hasn’t been used!

    if he was

1 – dressing, 2 – getting power play ice time, then

you can argue that he flopped. but they never even gave him a shot in toronto!

  17. BlueOrangeWhite says:

i do recognize the possibilty that you are insane.

but yes, good riddins to jonsson.

i’m not sure why you cosider it such a phenominal right of passage that i was there at those events. but i was.

if you have some bizzare way of contacting the isles and finding out who was in sect 305, row f, seats 1 and 2 for those games…you’ll find me and my father listed. we had the season tix since ’72.

  18. wingerxxx says:

Actually I am a girl, but I won’t hold that against ya. I do agree that they need to do something to jumpstart Hunter. He can’t afford a big step back at this point.

  19. islesfan4lyfe says:

This entire feud is quite comical, and I’d love to join in. The only problem is, whos side do i take? The Isles fand that thoroughly bashed me a few weeks ago, or the Ranger fan who is actually polite and knowledgeable? Hate to say it, but I’m siding with the Rangers fan. BlueOrangeWhite…you are no doubt a fan, BUT fans don’t bash other fans…especially when they are right. You thoroughly pissed me off weeks back regarding my Janne post. All you had to do was read it carefully and you would have noticed how right I actually was. I was not around for the cup years (I’m 22), but I have my share of stories. The bottom line is, to be a hockey fan, you must respect ALL hockey fans, something you, at your older age, should learn to do.

  20. BlueOrangeWhite says:

ypur post reveals that you are taking his side entirely because of a persoanl bias against me, not b/c he’s actually right, that’s lame.

also you as an isles fan should hang your head in shame for taking a rangers fans side on anything – no matter who the opponent.

re: this comment of yours: “something you, at your older age”. I will not hold your youth. lack of experience, and lack of knowledge against you.

  21. BlueOrangeWhite says:

wingerxxx the reply i wrote in hear that starts off with the insanity accusation, was not directed at you! it was clearly directed at the idiot gretzky99 fool that posted a reply in this thread.

  22. GretzNYR99 says:

Why don’t you just find the tickets or a picture or something?
