Ken Fidlin of the Toronto Sun wrote a recent article regarding Hayley Wickenheiser, the long time Canadian female hockey star playing her first professional hockey game in Finland.
ESPN had Mike Barnett, GM of the Coyotes in for an interview during Wednesday nights game again the Blackhawks and he revealed that along with the new building, the Coyotes will portray a new logo and new jerseys. Personally, I feel this is a damn good move! The current style is……ummm…..well, put it this way, the Canucks jerseys with the hockey stick on it were better! Watch for an outburst in jersey sales whether they come out next year or the year after. Jersey sales will go towards Amonte’s salary.
It has been reported by TSN that the Ottawa Senators will be filling for Bankruptcy prtection, which basically means they will be given 30 days to come up with a long term business plan to keep the team viable. However at any time within that 30 day window a portion of the team can be bought if a judge deems that a sale is good for the creditors and the company (team in this case). It is however important to understand that filing for bankruptcy does not negate contracts which are currently enforced with the union (such as the NHLPA).
News: Injuries are beginning to take their toll on the Thrashers, although it isn’t as bad as previous years. A bit more depth and experience from their farm team has helped somewhat. That being said, they are still in the midst of yet another funk. Even the full 60 minute effort in a 1-0 win against the Leafs isn’t enough to convince many that the team has started to turn a corner (but any win is meet with enthusiasm by Thrasher fans). Reports from the game have both teams playing poorly, and the refs not helping out at all. At the least, it ended a six game losing streak. Andy Sutton and Mike Weaver continue to get better on the back line, and now other teams are really noticing it. Pasi Nurminen has given up only two goals in his last two starts, playing as if he really wants to be the number one keeper. For those that have seen him, you know his style is pretty much all over the place. As a fan, it’s kinda nerve-racking to watch but damn if it isn’t fun. He didn’t get the nickname “Spiderman” for nothing. Watch for him and Dafoe to have more of a balance in the number of games played, and hopefully they can push each other for the starting spot.
Yeah guys, finally I think the New York Rangers solved their problems today! I’m not talkin’ about the Bure’s comeback – No-No-No! I’m talkin’ about CORY CROSS!
Newsday.com has updated reports that Pavel Bure’s surgery went fine this morning on 12/16/02
“Two arthroscopic procedures on each of Bure’s knees this morning found no damage to either anterior cruciate ligament, meaning the Rangers right wing will be back as early as the end of January.
Rangers team physician Andrew Feldman performed the procedures, in which a torn meniscus was repaired in Bure’s left knee, which was injured Dec. 6 and has had two MRIs done.”
What happened to Colorado?
The luckless Rangers
On the radar screen: Barry Trotz, Eddie and Stanley, Mike Knuble, foreshadower?, ESPN and their stats, the Flyers and a question about Ted Nolan
The Washington Capitals have a problem. In fact, they seem to have had this problem since their improbable (shall we say fluke?) run to the Cup finals in 1998. They can’t play hockey until after Christmas, and that is why they won’t be dancing in the post-season again unless major changes are made. Starting with overpaid whiner Jaromir Jagr.
The Boston Globe reports that Tampa has offered forward Fredrik Modin straight up for holdout defenseman Kyle Mclaren.
It didn’t take long for Montreal Canadien’s GM Andre Savard to satisfy Mariusz Czerkawski wishes, placing the Polish winger on waivers on Tuesday. Czerkawski had recently asked for a trade a from Montreal on Monday. So far this season, Czerkawski has had 9 points, 2 goals and 7 assists. Other NHL teams have until Wednesday to claim the forward.
In 605 career games in the NHL, Czerkawski has scored 179 goals with 192 assists.
