2K or EA? That is the Question

This is the time of year that I generally get most excited.

All of the major NHL moves have been made and the rosters are nearly set for the upcoming season. This year, however, does have some premier talent without places to play, and the whole Malkin defection. Pushing that to the side for the time being, let me get to my point…

Thrashers Land Big D-Man Vishnevski

TSN has reported that the Anaheim Ducks have shipped Big D-Man Vitaly Vishnevski to Atlanta for Forward Prospect Karl Stewart a 2007 2nd round draft pick, and a conditonal draft pick. It was rumoured that Vishnevski was going to be traded after he was rewarded a 1.55 million dollar contract from an arbatrator.


With recent developments with both Evgeni Malkin’s defection and Kessel’s signing in Boston we are forced to take a second look at the Calder trophy standings for this year.

Who are the contenders? Is there anyone who can beat Malkin’s early and higly touted shoe-in for the award?

Evgeni Malkin in Los Angeles

TSN is reporting that JP Barry and Evgeni Malkin have been together since the beginning of his dissapearance in Finland. On Wednesday Malkin received a US visa from the embassy in Helsinki and a few hours later were in route to the US.

Moran Going to Anaheim

According to Sportsnet unrestricted free-agent defensman Ian Moran has signed a one-year deal with the Anaheim Ducks. Moran recorded 2 points in 12 games for the Boston Bruins last year.

Dumont dying to be a Hab?

On 110% tv show last wednesday… Commentary from Michel Villeneuve:

“I spoke with JP Dumont’s Agent today. He told me that JP asked him not to call him during the week-end because of the death of his grand-dad. “NO CALL! Except If MONTREAL calls, call me right after!”

An hour ago (Monday, 7pm EDT), the Associated Press filed a report in which Pat Brisson, one of Malkin’s agents, was quoted as saying “I can tell you I think he is safe, but I cannot comment on anything else,”. Ther report can be found on

Russian team vows to sue Penguins over Malkin

By Robert Dvorchak, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Evgeni Malkin is in the process of obtaining a visa to travel to the United States and could be already in the country, according to a Russian journalist who once served as his translator. But whether Malkin plays for the Penguins this season apparently will come down to legalities and money.

According to Reuters, the Russian news agency Itar-Tass is reporting that Malkin has left his Russian club Metallurg Magnitogorsk during training camp in Finland.

Malkin, and the Impact On Hockey Pools

I am already starting to hear of some keeper leagues who are having their annual draft this month (although most are still held in September/October), and a lot of questions have been asked based on recent news in the hockey world regarding Evgeni Malkin.

Sykora An Oiler! is reporting that the Edmonton Oilers have signed forward, Petr Sykora, to a 1-year contract pending a physical!
