According Howerd Berger of the Fan 590 – The leafs have offered Michael Peca a 3 year + 1 year player option. A little less money but more tenure. I would expect an announement Monday.
Sportsnet.ca is reporting that the Leafs are very close to resigning Jason Allison for a far lower price than last year. Apparently he really wants to remain in Toronto. On another note, the Edmonton Oilers are making a serious push for the services of Eric Lindros. More to come as it becomes available.
All three groups competing for the slots license have pledged in writing to contribute to building the Penguins a new arena. No matter who wins the slot license, the Pens win. A great day for Pittsburgh hockey fans, not so great for people in Winnipeg and Hamilton.
There is one way to measure the impact thus far Bob has had on the Habs. It should be obvious that under his watch the team has significantly improved. Bob took over the team in may 2003, and has only had 2 working seasons with which to place his mark. One only has to look at what he inherited compared to what he has today.
First of all… Hal Gill was a very good signing by JFJ @ 2 mil. Take Jay McKee on Buffalo for example, he was one of the best defensive D-men in the league last season (although he did lead the league in blocked shots) here are his numbers while playing on the top seeded Sabres last season.
Bob Gainey once again pulled some major moves that none of the rumour mongers were expecting at all. The team’s made significant upgrades in order to keep with the North East arms race. The first saw Richard Zednik dealt to Washington for a pick, another pick sent to Phoenix for Mike Johnson; and most importantly, the signing of Sergei Samsonov to a 2yr, 7.05M contract. The two time All-Star and former Calder Trophy winner is being counted on in Gainey’s words to play alongside fellow Russian Alex Kovalev. But who will be centring this fearsome duo?
According to the Detroit Free Press..
A team spokesperson said Wednesday that the situation between the Red Wings and unrestricted free agent Ed Belfour remained unchanged.
Goaltender Martin Biron has accepted his $2.1-million US, one-year qualifying offer from the Buffalo Sabres, **even though he has asked the club to trade him.**
Sources say on the Team 990 Sports Rage, Gabriel Morency more specifically, that Souray wants out of Montreal. Also Gainey has agreed to grant this request from the D-man. One particular reason for this request is obviously for Souray getting closer to his daughter who lives in L.A. with his ex-wife. Detroit for now would be a most logical destination maybe in a package deal with Abby. Never say Never with Gainey!
