Avs acquire Sauer; part with Skoula

2/21/2004 – Tsn.ca reports

DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado Avalanche has acquired defenseman Kurt Sauer and a fourth round draft choice in the 2005 Entry Draft from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. In return, the Avalanche gave up the services of Martin Skoula.

The pendulum is swinging towards the Avs, Lacroix is a man of action who acts when his team demonstrates a deficiency. Sauer is a monster presence who will serve the Avs well.

I can’t help but laugh at the Wings fans trying to take away the credibility of Sauer. If he became a Wing, they’d love him and point out the 03 playoffs to every single little detail and this and that and say “Oh, he was a big reason why Detroit didn’t score much,” and so on.

First they blame Cujo for not being able to score a damn goal in the playoffs last year, then lets trash one of the defenders on Anaheim’s first pk unit last year that shut down the Wings.

    It all adds up.

I can’t help but laugh at you. If Sauer become a Wing he would be lucky to beat out Dandy or Woolley for the sixth defensemen spot, I would even consider taking Kronwall over him if he didn’t have a broken leg. Not trashing Sauer but the bottom line is he is 5th or 6th defensemen, not someone who is going to make a big difference. They gave up too much for him.

Yeah, a guy who was -23 on a defensive team is a great pickup….bad move by the Avs.

  4. AmericasteamRedWings says:

There were reasons Anaheim shut down Detroit last year- Keith Carney, J.S. Giguere, Ruslan Salei, Steve Rucchin- not Kurt Sauer.

Pierre Lacroix is known to acquire little known players that turn out to be terrific like Greg deVries from Nashville a few years ago, this year it was Kartis Skrastins ( who is playing superbly) and i think Kurt Sauer will do just fine in a supporting role. Avs have enough offensve on their ‘D with Blake and Morris and yes even Adam Foote is underrated at that role. With the play of John-Michael Liles and the fact the Avs have some blue chip prospects like Keith Ballard, Tomas Slovak and Johnny Boychuk, the Avs could afford to deal Skoula. Furhtermore, Sauer is not some old “rental” player, he’s only 23 so he should be solid for the Avs for a little while.

Even if Sauer wasn’t a big part of the Ducks defence, he certainly didn’t hurt them the way Skoula did for the Avs either. Not flashy, but solid is better than flashy with potential and a screw up.Against Detroit’s or Vancouver’s forechecking style, i’d rather have Sauer in the corners than Skoula wouldn’t you?

Actually Sauer is 6’4″ and weighs 225 lbs.

Maybe you should check your stats before you post

The “primadonna player” you are alluding to has won a Stanley Cup for Colorado. Struggling players need direction (i.e., coaching). You take the player aside and find out what’s going on inside the struggling player’s head. You take your so-called leaders on defense, like Blake and Foote and Morris, and have them work with the struggling player. This kind of thing can be worked out, but it requires team work and superior coaching to make it happen. I see it happen all the time in Detroit. Why isn’t it happening in Colorado?

  8. commonwealth says:

This guy really won’t get off the Wings thing….

Dude, if Detroit had Skoula you would be screaming for a trade. The avs want the cup now, they don’t have time to let Skoula mature. You only disagree with this trade because Detroit is not the team with Skoula, I think you should worry more about all the money your team paid Hasek to come back for 3 weeks and then quit cause his groin hurts…..

wa wa wa!!!! give the baby his check………

Defensive team? You must not be watching the same Ducks team I have…….

I just love people who blame one defensmen for a team losing this year, blame the fact that Anaheim sucks….

I’m not at all suprised by the people bashing this trade

Any team with Skoula on their team would make this move too. The avs have enough offensive production, why hold on to Skoula? Has Skoula overly impressed ANYONE with his play? I know I’m impressed by a guy who will make a bad dump pass in his own zone and cause a breakaway…I just have to agree with the smart people on this board, that both players need a change of scenary. Skoula will now have time to become a good defensemen and the Avs get what they need: Grit and toughness on the blueline.

Can we just stop with the Sauer bashing? He is a big defensive defensemen, he doesn’t try to hotdog or jump up in the play and loose the puck like Skoula. As an Avs fan though I have to hope Lacroix has one more big trade deadline deal in his pocket.

Also have to hope Blake gets back, I’d hate to go into the playoffs without him.

“Bottom line is, you’re a Wings fan who can’t shove his bias aside. You’ve lost, give it up.”

What exactly have I lost? As a Wings fan, I feel like I have won with this trade and the Peter Worrell trade and the Chris Drury trade and the John Klemm defection and the Greg DeVries defection and the Patrick Roy retirement and the Ray Borque retirement, etc..

Let’s see, with a name like GretzNYR99, you used to be a Gretzky/Ranger fan until the stench got so bad in New York that you jumped on to the Colorado bandwagon. Am I close?

  14. Freeze says:

Detroit doesn’t need Skoula with Lidstrom, Schnieder, a returning Hatcher, Chelios, Fischer, Woolley, Dandenault, Kronwall and Rivers. Who would Skoula replace?

As for Hasek, who knew that Hasek would turn out to be a bust? I understand why Holland took a chance on him. It just didn’t work out.

  15. GretzNYR99 says:

I can’t help but laugh at your incessant bluffing. This is really funny. Exactly what I expected someone like yourself to say, “Blah blah, he’s nothing” and then an incoherent rant on how Sauer is 5th defenseman at best. It’s pretty funny, a 5th defenseman at best that still has a bit of potential and played on Anaheim’s revered 1st pk unit in the playoffs last year. That’s right, the pk unit you guys couldn’t score on.

The funny thing is, Anaheim just downgraded their defense. I hope Babcock can work with him and fine tune him, or else this trade screws them over completely. Sauer is just the type of defenseman Colorado needs.

  16. GretzNYR99 says:

But you didn’t mention the fact that your team couldn’t score on that PK unit, and Anaheim’s 1st pk unit had none other but Kurt Sauer on defense.

    It all adds up.

  17. GretzNYR99 says:

What in the hell are you talking about?

Because I’m replying to an Avalanche article means that I’ve all of a sudden jumped to the “Avalanche Bandwagon?”

What in the hell do you smoke, besides pole? Cause what ever the other stuff is, I want some, it works wonders, and your ill-fated, idiosyncratic assumptions are proof of it.

No, you simple-minded sack of shit, I’m obviously a Ranger fan. I’m posting on here because I was interested by the trade, and I posted on the Boughner one also.

So now for every time that you post on another teams article, I can call you a bandwagon jumper, and it would make sense?

Good job, that’s a logical fallacy in it’s own. Nice try, dipshit.

  18. GretzNYR99 says:

You hit the head on the nail, but you’ll find some Wing fan try to come along and take away your credibility for being able to have an open mind.

  19. GretzNYR99 says:

“Detroit doesn’t need Skoula with Lidstrom, Schnieder, a returning Hatcher, Chelios, Fischer, Woolley, Dandenault, Kronwall and Rivers. Who would Skoula replace?”

I have a few pieces of advice for you…

    1. Detroit doesn’t need Skoula, this article has nothing to do with Detroit. The topic for the article reads “Colorado Avalanche.”

    2. According to your twisted logic, you’re a Ducks fan? Maybe I read into it wrong, but I hope you don’t expect me to read into such incoherent crap and actually understand your babbling.

    3. One last thing here… GET OVER IT.

  20. defenestrate says:

Hellloooo? He’s been passing to the “other team” for three years running….don’t you think it was time to trade him to the “other team?”

It’s all about reverse psychology. Now, when we play the Ducks, he’ll actually connect on his breakout passes – to Sakic, Hejduk, et al….
