Backstrom Signed

According to, the Minnesota Wild have re-signed goaltender Niklas Backstrom to a multi-year contract. He was set to be a UFA on July 1st.

With this signing it more than likely confirms that Manny Fernandez will be dealt

well, this certainly puts a damper on all the Leafs fans who wanted Backstrom:P

  2. beefjerky says:

I expected as much. Minnesota won't have much trouble trading Fernandez with so many teams in need of a goaltender and Giguere the only A-List goalie a UFA (that i can think of right now)

  3. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

but not leaf fans who wanted Fernandez

  4. hockeyfreak64 says:

The deal is a two year, 6.2 million dollar contract.I think Fernandez is going to Florida on draft day, for Van Ryn, Janis Sprukts, and a 4th round pick

team that needs one bad is detroit…..

lets see if fernandez lands there….

  6. KingCanada says:

Leafs sign both Racine and Ford, then trade one of them (goalie prolly has to fo the other way) along with say Hal Gill (to more or less even cap space) and toss in a mid round pick, to anyone who says thats way too low, fernandez isnt THAT great of a goalie to start with so slow down, but i do realise his value will go up becose of the low goalie market this off-season.

  7. KingCanada says:

maybe replace the pick with Jeremy Williams and thats fair

  8. CaptainAvery says:

If Columbus was smart they would snag Fernandez, there the last team I would ever cheer for but it's a likey scenario in my view. Maybe Zherdev for Fernandez.

  9. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

sign and trades dont happen, its an unwritten rule
Boston would offer Murray and your trade isnt near THAT

  10. ferron says:

the team with the greatest amount of goalie is MTL Huet, Danis,Halak,Price, Leighton, Desjardins, the question is who will be traded?

  11. flamingsenator says:

u obviosuly dont know minni then

they have their system set…..a system that includes guys the COMPLETE opposite of zherdev

they sure do, their goalie last year ended up with 38 wings in like 60 games, then got them to the final 4 in which they out played the cup champs as opposed to the senators. With the numbers Hasek puts up im suprised he is in the NHL anybody can do 38 wings in 60 games, i mean thats not like over 80 games he wasn't on pace to out win broduer and luongo, ooh wait ya he was…. Hey i got 2 ideas… first off watch hockey… if not atleast go look at the stats to make some informed statement atleast cuz maybe this is just me, but finishing 3rd in the league for goals against doesnt to me seem to be a weakness….

  13. BruMagnus says:

It also has a limited NTC where he cannot be traded in his first year of the contract.

  14. BruMagnus says:

I think (and hope) you are being sarcastic.

As I posted many times, Hasek was possibly the best goalie last year and actually had the best winning % per games played outta all goalies who played over 20 games or so. Had he played Luongo or Brodeur numbers he'd have easily broken 50 wins, possibly 55.

  15. KingCanada says:

ok well i dont think the Leafs should trade much more for an aging goaltender, anything more then wat i said is sacrificing too much future for a goalie that has a handful of seasons left TOPS and hes not that great at that, definatly no Hasek..

Great Stu Barnes signing. $900k for a guy who comes to play in the playoffs. During the game that lasted forever between Vancouver and Dallas, Barnes was the most noticeable player on either team, and he hit the cross bar, hit, backchecked set up great scoring chances. I was amazed at how well this guy played in that series. And he brings a little extra leadership to a team with guys like Lunqvist and Erikson and the other young guys coming up (possibly some kids to replace Lindros, Nagy).

as the old guy in Buffalo would say:
What a play by STUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU BARNES!!!!!!

  17. CaptainAvery says:

Wow you taught me all I need to know about their system, aren't you a *****ing brainiac.

  18. BruMagnus says:

agreed. and a former Penguin to boot. 30 goals and 65 points career year with the Pens.

  19. tacitus says:

i wasnt being sarcastic, i was totally backing up hasek's performance

  20. BruMagnus says:

im confused. I think we agree, but Im confused.

"With the numbers Hasek puts up im suprised he is in the NHL"
     This is a joke/sarcasm right?

"anybody can do 38 wins in 60 games, i mean thats not like over 80 games he wasn't on pace to out win broduer and luongo"
followed by  "ooh wait ya he was…"
that's sarcasm right? or else I dunno what is!

  21. tacitus says:
