Barrasso To Retire A Penguin

ESPN.COM is reporting that Tom Barrasso, recently released goaltender of the St. Louis Blues, will sign a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins so that he can retire a member of the team he played 12 seasons for. As a member of the Penguins Barraso captured back-to-back stanley cup championships in 1991 and 1992. It is not reported whether Barraso will play considering that the Penguins have a formidable goaltending tandem all ready in place with Johan Hedberg as a #1 goaltender and the up and coming J.S Aubin as a #2. But if Barrasso is planning on playing the signing will come at opportune time as Hedberg has recently suffered a shoulder injury that has led to the call up of Sebastien Caron. Hedbergs injury is not reported as serious so the margin of time for return would be slim. Barraso probably sees a signing with Pittsburgh as a good oppurtunity to end his illustrious NHL career on a positive note.

Barrasso has been a solid goalie all his career and a top US goalie obviously.

But, the either Hedberg or Aubin have to be injured for at least 8 games.

Why waste money on Barrasso when you need to re-sign players?

Nice move though and Barrasso could wave good bye to his fans.

  2. amok says:

Nice gesture by the Pens to sign him. I hope they got him cheap though.

Barasso was the biggest a$$hole to ever put on a penguins jersey. He cried and whined when his daughter was diagnosed with cancer so he had some TV spots where he asked the people of Pittsburgh to help him out. Well, we people of Pittsburgh did step up, and you know what we got in return? Nothing. He repeatedly turned a cold shoulder to fans who only wanted an autograph. People like him make me sick. I sure as hell hope they dont retire his number and stick a banner in the rafters.

We need more stories like this in hockey.

Barrasso is a piece of crap. He has always been a jerk and always will be a jerk. He was a cancer in the lockerroom in his later days as a penguin, frequently becoming a jerk to younger goaltender J.S. Aubin when Aubin would start over him.

Hedberg’s injury is a broken collarbone which will keep him out of action for 3-4 weeks.

Caron has already been called up, and as the post-gazette reports, this move is just so that Barrasshole can retire a penguin.

Barrasso is a jerk and always will be. He has a limited fan base in Pittsburgh because of this.

As bad as Barrasso was (supposedly) here in St. Louis, I am glad he is able to retire hopefully on a higher note rather than being dumped by a team. Good luck to Tommy B.
