Great job by Nonis not waiting until the end of next season to get this done.

Bieksa is a great player and will help the nucks for years to some.  Definetley a top 4 defenceman plus he has that edge the canucks lack over all.  Good Job Nonis, now what happens?

  2. Mr_Canuck says:

Just a quick note: TSN reporting is to be 3 years 11.25 million.

kinda strange they gave him 3.75 if you ask me because Ohlund / Salo / Mitchell each make the same, 3.5 Million. They should have given all 4 the same. The first communism blue line

  3. the_word says:

Great job by Nonis locking up his team's leading goal scorer for the next three years.

  4. lacrosseroxsox says:

Great job nonis, and the cap hit for next season will only be 550,000, i know eklud is an idiot, believe me, but i just thought i should pass this on, he said Aaron Miller.
The Vancouver Canucks may be leading the pack here. I have been hearing this over the past three days.
if this does go down, does this mean a potential trady comin up for ole nonis? or just eklund at it again.

  5. mikster says:

Wow, so…all you have to do is have one 40 point season as a sophomore and you get nearly $4M a season, as a defenseman.

I like Bieksa, but so overpayed. This only drives up the price for 40 point d-men. I guess this makes Jay Bo worth like $6M a season. Way to go Nonis! Thanks!

  6. vancity4life says:

congrats nonis, this is a real bargain.

  7. MR40 says:

Bieksa is also a very good two way player who has a physical edge. I've never heard Willie Mitchell name in the overpaid columm, but he barely got 10 points and is worth about the same as Bieksa. Bieksa will just get better, and maybe could be a 55 point scorer. 50 is more reasonable for now, but he can score goals, and is very tough and it is not pleasant playing against him. There aren't many defenseman still who can play a very physical nasty style, and still get goals.

Mybe he's a bit overpaid now, but in the long run it's worth it. Also he's getting 550k this year, so by the time he has two years under his belt (likely both good seasons) he will be worth this cash.

  8. Komic-J says:

You guys really think this is a good deal or is it sarcasm ?!?

I'm from Montreal, so I don't get to watch 82 Canucks games per year, but I didn't anything special in Bieksa that deserves that kind of money. Don't get me wrong, I think he does a good job outhere…but I had him label as a potential $2.00m – $2.50m defenseman ?!?

  9. MR40 says:

If Timmonen is worth 6.3 million, then Bieksa for 3.75 is a huge bargain.

I like what Nonnis is doing. getting the players he's already got locked up, and he will almost definatly make a fairly big trade. Maybe not like the Luongo trade, but he will make a splash. I don't expect a superstar, but likely a top 3forward is heading this way. If he was trying to get a top 6 forward that would have been done already, because he could have signed somebody, or made a trade because there are more 2nd liners available then 1st's.

  10. MR40 says:

He's worth it. He puts up slightly less points then Markov, but has the physical edge to make up for it. This kid will be awesome in a few years. He is probably a bit overpaid now, but since all defensemen are now it's okay, and he won't make 3.75 this season anyways. He'll be worth it by 2008-2009.

  11. Komic-J says:

    Okay…so it'll be:

    07-08: $0,550,000
    08-09: $3,750,000
    09-10: $3,750,000
    10-11: $3,750,000

If he's as good as you say, then it's probably a good deal. I wonder why he didn't sign for $3.5m though…would have showed a little more "team spirit" in my book.

  12. the_word says:

The first communist blue line, didn't Russia already have one of those?

  13. cujomack says:

4 Million ……Man, omg one good season with 42pts…wow …..I think it is fair to say the owners let the GM's in the league sign these bums to muti-million dollar contracts.. 4 mill for this guy is way to much money.. The reason we got a cap was to stop overpaying bums… 4 million for a guy probably who most NHL players don't know.. Way to go Nonis.  You are no Brian Burke thats for sure..Are you and JFJ in TO getting drunk with agents and not remembering what you have just done.  Just cause the cap goes up, doesn't mean you can blow it on garbage.. He is a good player ..but good should not get u 4 million…But then again Toronto gave 5 mill to another bum D man with one good year…..  Glad to see Brian Burke moved and won a cup within a few years..

  14. the_word says:

Yeah this is JFJ fault, good call.  I'd take McCabe and his production over any of the glorified AHLers on the Canucks blueline.

  15. Hoondog2 says:

No, Tomas Kaberle at 4.25 is a bargain.  3.75 for a player who was a rfa, and can't be signed by anybody else, who has had 1 good season is overpaying!

  16. Hoondog2 says:

The difference is Kubina was a UFA, with a cup, a 17 goal season, a physical edge, and other g.m.'s bidding for his services.  You're comparing UFA's, and RFA's, its apples, and oranges.  Giving 3.75 for a guy who had 1 good year, is already signed for next year, and had only 1 team to negotiate with, is throwing money away too easily.

  17. senators101 says:

They are two very different defenseman.  Kaberle is offensively gifted and thats his primary role.  Bieksa can still put up points but is also quite physical.  He'll be worth that 3.75 in 2 years.  He's making less than a mil this year.

  18. FlyerzFan12 says:

I don't think that the Timonen contract and Bieksa's can really be compared when one guy has been around for years and Bieksa had one very solid year.  People can say that Bieksa is overpaid the first year, maybe two, but as long as he keeps progressing after this past season, then in a year or two the 3.75 could be a bargain, too many intangibles, like many other similar signings, to judge now.  Hell, I'd be damn happy with Bieksa on the Flyers for a price tag of 3.75 when we have Hatcher making 3.5.  Again, two completely different players with different roles and more than a decade apart in age, but similar in price.

  19. prayin-for-the-wce says:

I would rather have Bieksa for this price than not have him at all.  But on that note he is a bit overpaid considering he only had 1 good year under his belt and is suddenly getting paid more than all our top 3 defenceman.  I honestly thought he would make around 2.5 or so, 3.75 is a little too much.  I think Nonis shoudla bargained him down to at least 3.5 so that the top 4 defenceman are making the same amount.  How can he give Bieksa such a high raise right away?  Salo took a paycut and for 2 years at 1.5 then took a bigger paycut for 3.5 for 4 years later.  Mitchell coulda gotten 4.5 if he signed with Dallas, and Ohlund took a pay cut when he signed his deal a few years ago.  Why did Bieksa want to get paid more than any of these guy's after only 1 good year is a mystery in its own.  How are his fellow defenceman going to look at him now.  I hardly think that Bieksa is better than any of those 3 defenceman.  He is good and will get better, but I don't see him getting that much better than he did this year.  But then again, unlike the rest of them, he doesn't have a no trade clause in his contract.  So if worse comes to worse he can always be trade bait, for some offensive help which the Canucks desperately need.

  20. prayin-for-the-wce says:

All praise be to Nonis for yet again signing Aaron Miller and Addressing our greatest need … Defenceman.  All kidding aside, we seriously need to get a hard nosed goalscorer signed.  Our defence is strong enough, unless Nonis plans to move one of the big 4 soon in a trade for some offence

  21. Mr_Canuck says:

    lol.. canucks just signed Miller.

    I have a feeling Ohlund's a goner  – or Maybe Mitchell .. Cap room ?

  22. moosehockey says:

Judging this signing right now is useless. The guy had a good season and if he continues to progress and rack up the points his 3.75 will be a bargain once he gets there… If he flops he will be a waste of cap space… but its a calculated risk for a guy that has shown much imporvement since being in the NHL.

Last year everyone thought Briere for 5 million was way too much and the team wouldn't give him 5 million per year over a 5 year span now look what happened there… Bieksa is one of the Canucks good assets who worked his way up from the AHL to become what I would deem to be a solid top 4 NHL guy with offensive skills as well as grit… two very important things when it comes to a defenceman.

I also believe the signing of Aaron Miller opens up the door for a trade of a defenceman to bring in some offensive help.

Right now the Canucks have: Mitchell, Ohlund, Salo, Krajicek, Bieksa, Miller, Bourdon… I don't think there is enough ice time for all of these quality D-men… I would expect a trade to happen soon if it hasn't already been negotiated with stipulation that the Canucks were able to find a free agent replacement to the one they were trading… Will be interesting to see.

  23. moosehockey says:

I forgot about Edler, add him to the list of guys the Canucks have… they have to be shipping something out I would think.

  24. beefjerky says:

Maybe they are overpaid, but the bottom line is the Canucks have a very fine top 4 for the price of 14 million…if you look around the league, that's almost a steal. They lack that one guy like Pronger that can make a difference, but the depth is good.

  25. MR40 says:

Bieksa was a UFA next season not an RFA.

Bieksa is going to get developing, and will be as much of a steal as Kabrele. Kaberle is older, and doesn't bring the physicality Bieksa has, it's not even close.

Kaberle also signed his contract when he was at the most worth 4.25 million. That was Kaberle's first great season. The only difference is Kaberle had a bunch of average season's first. Also he signed that contract last summer when everyone was getting less money.

  26. tancred says:

I'd love to see Ohlund go to the Devils.  We still need a defenseman or two.  Not sure if the Canucks would be interested in trading with the Devils though, or what exactly they'd want if so.

  27. Hoondog2 says:

Disregard this comment if Bieksa is in fact a UFA next year.  He is still being overpaid at this point, if he keeps progressing then the deal looks good.

  28. canucklehead_101 says:

I Know this may sound weird but there is a good crop down in MTB with Rahimi, Coulombe, Ryan (Prestin), and other great prospects
I hate the fact we have a bad development core but it looks pretty good to me
