Big Changes in Ottawa?

With the Ottawa Senators playing very poorly there are a ton of rumors floating around the nations Capital about potential changes that the Senators may make to pull out of this slump. Some of the rumors include Gerber and Heatley.

In goal it appears that Martin Gerber has played his last game as a Senator. According to Sun Media Brian Elliot has been promised a chance to play and as a result Gerber is the odd man out. The report is that Gerber will most likely be put on waivers if the Senators can not find a taker for him and will be sent down to the minors to take over Elliot’s place as the number one goalie on the farm. is also reporting on the Senators huge slump and they indicate that rumors have been circulating that the Senators may be willing to trade star forwards Dany Heatley or Jason Spezza. As we reported last week here at HTR is also rumoring that Craig Hartsburg’s days are numbered.

The only guy I see them not trading is Alfie. Not that he is untouchable or anything but at $5million, his cost vs. production ratio is pretty good. Everyone else is expendable really.

One other note .. its understandable that Gerber is upset about being the odd man out. He has been an NHL regular for a few seasons. But at the end of the day, your play dictates your ice time. He wasnt playing well even in the slightest. Yes, the defense in front of him is hardly stellar but some of the goals he is letting in are horrid. So, you play like crap, you dont play. Its that simple Marty.

I'd take heatley with the Habs.

    let's say:

Plekanec, higgins, Bouillon and a 1st round pick

    for Heatley

  3. greatlife15 says:

Change Higgins to McDonagh or Pacioretty or both.

  4. wayne2 says:

Two trades to shake things up.

    To Columbus:Gerber+Spezza+Heatley
    To Ottawa:Leclaire+Brassard+Nash

    To Florida:Vermette+Schubert+Zubo+ 2rd pick
    To Ottawa:Horton

Defintly on the move at the Deadline will be

    1. Chris Neil
    2. Filip Kuba
    3. A. Vermette
    4. J. Smith
    5. Volchenkov
    5. Kelly
    6. Auld
    7. Brian Lee
I think Hartsburg will survive the season, but will probably get fired. I think it's to bad because he is a good coach, but I don't like how gets the Sens sit back when they have the lead. The core  players have been always coached to attack, especailly when they have a lead and the other team opens up. It has been their M.O. forever, not that they ever have leads these days but hey.
they may try and get rid of Jason Smith, and maybe Spezza. I think it is time to change the big 3, it obviuosly is not working.
New Core Players that are safe
that's it, scary eh considering how good this team used to be.

I can see any or all of those being gone except Volchenkov. I think he's a keeper.

  8. wayne2 says:

From that list i would keep Volchenkov,Kelly,Auld and Lee.
Volchenkov is still young, very physical and very good defensively.
Kelly is relatively cheap, shows leadership has great speed and solid two-way forward
Auld is a cheap and solid backup.
Lee is very young and will get better,he just needs a little more experience.

  9. muckies says:

I agrre on all your points. I think has really improved the last 2-3 games, but he is so bad defensively in front of the net, he is just lost. I know he is still young, and Volchenkov took forever to develop, so I say keep him, but not so sure if Bryan Murray is a big fan

The more the sens deal away the better.

The trade value of all these guys is low, because they are playing so poorly. but 50 goal scorers dont turn into 30 goal scorers, they have bad years (and teams tend to gave good and bad years collectively).

These players will rebound, the question is when and for what team…

  11. mitchamac says:

I was watching hockey central today…. one of the guys on there was saying that gerbers days are done…… with his contract gone they are going to pick up a puck moving defenceman……… also murray said (accourding to the guy on the show) that he would move their first round picks before they would move the big three to save his job…

  12. greatlife15 says:

TOronto wants your 1st rounder. Probably a top 5 at the rate they are going.

  13. mitchamac says:

i would do it for kaberle what are the chances that a first rounder comes in and dominates the nhl

    doesnt happen very often

i would trade for kaberle for ottawa first rounder
he still has 2 years so he wouldnt be considered a rental
he is the better offence defenceman out ther (contract 4.25)

  14. TradeMaster66 says:

Hows bout trading Heatly to SJ. Imagine how scary a line of Heatly-Thornton-Setoguhi would be. In return i think we could offer: Milan Michalek, Logan Couture, Marcel Goc and a 1st in 2010. Seem fair?
