Blockbuster Brewing????

Bruce Garroch of Sun Media provides some very interesting trade rumor talk. He speculates that the Senators and Oilers have been having some very “intense” discussions regarding a potentially huge blockbuster trade.

The deal is rumored to include Wade Redden and Antoine Vermette heading to the Oilers in return for Jason Smith and either Joffrey Lupul or Shawn Horcoff.

Edmonton could throw in both Lupul and Horcoff with Smith and they would still win the trade.

wtf? I dont want horcoff or lupul, especially at the expense of vermette – he's a solid 2-way player.  If they want to get rid of redden, 1-for-1 for smith and i'm happy.  there's nothing else edmonton has.

  3. habswinthecup-again says:

While I agree that the Oilers would win this trade as is, Redden is twice the defenseman  that Smith is so trading them even up is ridiculous.

  4. senators101 says:

Yea, but look at the salary difference. 6.5 vs. somewhere in the 2's i think.  Smith has the same playoff experience as redden going to the finals.  Redden's contract expires next year and you can't afford to let him walk like Chara did.  Might as well get something out of him.

I like Redden, but the sens need some major money for fisher, heatley, emery, and others, whose contracts expire by next year.

  5. Neely4Life says:

Ya, i defently dont like the idea of trading Vermette for one of those guys.  I dunno, maybe Lupal had an off year, maybe he had a fluke year the year before with the Ducks.  I wouldnt mind Smith coming here, he would make a solid 3, 4 D man, and no one here would ever question his heart or toughness.  That being said, u trade Redden, and that free's up 6.5 mil, and if u get rid of gerber, thats another 3.5, so, 10 extra mil is huge when there are tons of UFA's and RFA's on ur team next year.  Spezza, Heatley, Fisher, Mezaros.  None of these guys are older than 26, and they are the core of the team, Ottawa is the 2nd youngest team in the league, made it to the cup finals.  With the right manegment of this team, they could be that good for a long time, and Redden's salary right now is a Burden.

I'll agree to the trade if Edmonton takes Gerber along. If it happens, it would be some serious salary dump, maybe enough to resign Dany Heatley.

  7. wayne2 says:

Why Vermette,he is one of the best two way player,he`s one of the best to win face offs and is still pretty young. If he gets traded it will be a huge mistake.Redden for Smith would be a salary dump.Talks are also about Gerber to Phoenix in return of Derek Morris.I rather trade him for a pick and save money to sign Roberts and  Brière.

  8. JannettyTheRocker says:

C'mon K-Lowe……I got my cash in hand, ready to go get me a Wade Redden Edmonton Oiler's jersey. This will be fricken great if it's true.

GO OILERS GO!!! 2008 Stanley Cup Champions!!!

  9. flamingsenator says:

u find a gm willing to give the sens a pic for gerber…

  10. senators101 says:

I'd do that too, but they won't take Gerber.  They've got 2 pretty good goalies – Roloson and Markanen as their backup.

Apparently, there were rumors for Gerber to Phoenix for Derek Morris – but that's just exchanging salaries, cuz morris is 3.9/year for 2 more years.  We'll save money though, b/c we then either won't need Preissing or Corvo.  Hopefully we can re-sign Preissing and get rid of Corvo.

  11. Senatorsfan78 says:

I  agree I would like the Senators trade Wade Redden for Jason Smith straight up and Martin Gerber traded for a draft pick and then the Senators can go out and Sign Gary Roberts and Curtis Joesph as the backup goalie to Ray Emery.

I think this could happen, really.

  14. oildude says:

Smith and Horcoff for Redden and Vermette would be an awesome trade for Edmonton. I just hope they don't give up Lupul or Torres in the deal.

  15. edmontonrules says:

Canadian teams don't trade with each other. It's an unwritten rule. BUT if the trade did happen the Oilers would own that.

  16. Nemix says:

Muckler was dumped for trading big pieces away from otaawa's team. Redden like  Alfreddsoon, will not be going anywhere, and at very least  for a 3rd liner who rode smyth's back and a lost identity. If Murray does this..i hope he is fired too.  The rumor is garbage

  17. Nemix says:

Smith is not a number one defensemen at all..if so why would edmonton still be looking for defense?  3rd round draft pick for smith at most.Volchenkov led all with most hits..and is stable in his own end.. thus he is not needed..  Once again , no thank you. Keep your junk
