Blues Acquire Toivonen From Boston

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced today the team has acquired goaltender Hannu Toivonen (HA-noo, TOI-voh-nuhn) from the Boston Bruins in exchange for Carl Soderberg. according to the stlouisblues official website.

“Hannu is a former 1st round draft choice who gives our club depth in the goaltending position,” said Davidson. “Our scouts feel he has tremendous upside and a bright future in the National Hockey League.”

Toivonen, 23, was selected by Boston in the 1st round, 29th overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He has spent the last four seasons in the Bruins’ organization, splitting time between Boston and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Providence Bruins.

Last season, Toivonen played in 18 games with Boston, posting a 3-9-1 record. The 6-2, 210-pound goaltender appeared in 27 games with Providence, backstopping the club to a 13-13-1 record, a .909 save percentage along with a 2.37 goals against average, which ranked ninth in the AHL.

The Kalvola, Finland native made his NHL debut on Oct. 8, 2005 at Pittsburgh, earning his first NHL victory in a 7-6 overtime game.

I imagine Toivonen and Bacashihua will battle out who backs up Legace with the loser starting on the farm?

I'm wondering if Chiarelli and Davidson have something going on here. This is (2) promising prosepects that Boston has sent over in Boyes previously and now Toivonen. I wish Boston hadn't given up on him this quickly. He is young and probably one day will be a legitimate top 5 or 10 goalie in the league.

I don't know much on this Soderberg. It sounds like he has some upside. As a bruin fan I am still upset over the Boyes/Wideman trade. Wideman is brutal.

Man Boston gives up on goalies quick.  Wonder who they'll get for Rask after his first loss.

My guess is a bag of pucks. But seriously I could Kind of justify the Boyes trade because Boston is actually deep at center and despite popular believe Wideman  actually is a decent defender, with a offensive upside. That Soderberg is a Big kid, He is 6-3, 200lbs and he is only 21, Second round pick, so with the recent addition of Fernandez, and Rask waiting in the winds(P-Bruins Starter now) I think Toivonen was the most expendable of the group with maybe the exception of Thomas(He would be hard to move right now because of the 1 mil cap hit and his age and experience.)
