Bolting in early

Its one day away from the start of the 2008 free agency, and there’s many big names out on the market.

I’m going to start off with some trades that happened so far:

– Anaheim Acquired a 2008 third-round pick from the Minnesota Wild for defenceman Marc-Andre Bergeron.

– Calgary Acquired centre Michael Cammalleri and a 2008 second-round pick from the Los Angeles Kings for a 2008 first-round pick and a 2009 second-round pick; also acquired a 2008 first-round pick and a 2009 second-round pick from the Montreal Canadiens for left wing Alex Tanguay and a 2008 fifth-round pick.

– Colorado Acquired centre Marty Sertich from the Dallas Stars for a 2009 conditional pick; acquired a 2008 second-round pick from the Los Angeles Kings for right wing Brad Richardson; also acquired forward Matt Hendricks from the Boston Bruins in exchange for defenceman Johnny Boychuk.

– Columbus Acquired defenceman Jonathan Sigalet from the Boston Bruins for left wing Matt Marquardt; also acquired centre R.J. Umberger and a 2008 fourth-round pick from the Philadelphia Flyers for 2008 first- and third-round picks.

– Edmonton Acquired centre Ryan Potulny from the Philadelphia Flyers for defenceman Danny Syvret; **also acquired defenceman Lubomir Vishnovsky from the Los Angeles Kings for centre Jarret Stoll and defenceman Matt Greene.

– L.A. acquired a 2009 fifth-round pick from the St. Louis Blues for defenceman T.J. Fast.

– Nashville acquired left wing Triston Grant and a 2009 seventh-round pick from the Philadelphia Flyers for defenceman Janne Niskala.

– Phoenix acquired centre Olli Jokinen from the Florida Panthers for defencemen Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton and a 2008 second-round pick; also acquired right wing Alex Bourret from the New York Rangers for a 2008 third-round pick; also cquired forward Brian McGrattan from the Ottawa Senators for a 2009 fifth-round pick.

– St.louis acquired goaltender Chris Mason from the Nashville Predators for a 2008 fourth-round pick.

– Carolina acquired the rights to left wing Darcy Hordichuk from the Nashville Predators for a 2009 fifth-round pick.

– Philadelphia acquired defenceman Danny Syvret from the Edmonton Oilers for centre Ryan Potulny; also acquired defenceman Steve Eminger and a 2008 third-round pick from the Washington Capitals for a 2008 first-round pick.

– Toronto acquired right wing Jamal Mayers from the St. Louis Blues for a 2008 third-round pick.

But, the big story is in Tampa Bay, after coming off a disappointing season, going 31-42-9 for 72 points in 82 games.

This summer they are trying to redeem them selves, and a first move was a great one. The Tampa Bay Lightning drafted soon to be super star Steve Stamkos going 1st overall. He has the potential to one day be in the hall of fame, and can show he can already be a leader to this lightning team.

As the free agency hasnt even begun, it has already for Tampa Bay. The team already made some splashes:

trade: Re-acquired the rights to Vaclav Prospal from Philadelphia for a 2008 7th round draft pick and a conditional 2009 4th round pick.

acquisitions:

– traded a 3rd round draft pick in 2009 to the Penguins in exchange for the exclusive negotiating rights to forwards Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts.

– signed: Malone- 7 year, $31.5 million dollar contract.
Roberts- 1 year, $1.25 million dollar contract plus $10,000 for every game he plays in the 2008-2009 season.

– traded a conditional draft pick in either 2009 or 2010 draft to the Minnesota wild for forward brian rolston.

– tampa hasn’t signed rolston yet.

According to owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie, that a head start in the negotiating and signing process can help secure the that they are targeting for tampa bay, and that they are still getting a chance to get another quality player in a Lightning uniform sooner than rather later.

Should be a fun team to watch, especially in Prague at the beginning of the season.

Is it too early to ship the cup to Tampa??? Just put their names on the cup already
