Boston Bruins would be right up Edmonton Oilers defenceman Ryan Whitney’s alley

Ryan Whitney likes being an Edmonton Oilers defenceman, but if GM Steve Tambellini called him up and said he was going to the Boston Bruins in a trade, I’m sure Whitney’s heart would skip a few beats.

He was born in Boston, went to one of hockey’s better prep factories in Thayer Academy (Jeremy Roenick’s school), attended Boston University, played for the legendary Jack Parker, who just retired. Follows all things Beantown.

This would be the perfect landing spot for Whitney.

I didn’t see any Bruins pro scouts (or Blues or Hurricanes, two other teams in the hunt for Whitney) at the Oilers road games in Nashville or St. Louis, but the Bruins’ Western guy, the raconteur  Tommy McVie, has been around Rexall Place lots during the lockout, not for awhile though.

The Bruins do need somebody to help their powerplay — they thought rookie Dougie Hamilton would be it, but his point the other night was his first in 10 games. Like all kids, it’s a huge adjustment to the bigs for Hamilton.

Their powerplay has been awful (25th); they thought forward Tyler Seguin would energize it from the half-wall, but again, it’s sputtered.

Boston’s gone this route before, trading for a puck-mover at the deadline. They struck out on defenceman Tomas Kaberle, winning the Cup in spite of his lack of offence in 2011.
