Thank God !!! I'm so happy for Montreal !

  2. Penssuck says:

Yay for another disappointing year in montreal!!!

  3. kamullia says:

Eight years for somewhere between $6M-$7M each year, simply almost spells money all over. I doubt anyone offered that long of a contract to him. I was also under the impression Montréal was going to make a serious push for him, but certainly not an 8-year contract.

  4. Penssuck says:

The contract is long, to bring the cap number down.  His 1st year he'll get paid 10 million dollars, while towards the end, it will be really low making it easier to move him or buy him out.

Another brilliant signing by holmgren to find the loop holes in the new system.  Expect to see lots of long term deals to help keep and sign players.  The poorer teams are going to have a hard time attracting players of this caliber without the cash to boot.

  5. The-President says:

10 million the first year, HOLY CRAP! Then 6.5 for the last 7 years, that's a lot to pay for a player that had 2 good seasons.

  6. Neely4Life says:

Better hope he works out, becuase he is un-tradaeble!

  7. Neely4Life says:

brilliant?  a bit of an over statement.  But hey, if he puts up 90 plus points again, it looks great, exspecially with the youth.  If he flops, might be a lot of explaing to do.  Time will tell, but i think the fans should be excitted!  I asume ur a flyers fan my man?

  8. adrianna_habs says:

Of course he's un-tradeable…..he has a no movement clause, duh!

  9. flyersfan10897 says:

yeah, except the cap number is the average salary, so its 6.5 every year against the cap.

  10. MR40 says:

this is a smart move, because the way the Cap is going up he'll be a bargain at 6.5 million per season in 6 years (hell he's a bargain right now, he was supposed to get 8.0 million).

  11. wingerxxx says:

Wow.  Now he is a nice little player, but for that contract, the Flyers can have him.  Good for Briere though, he is all set.  I just have to wonder what Chris Drury is going to be asking for now.

  12. Uncleben says:

idk. the new CBA will be over in just a few years wont it?  Cap may just reset to a lower number. who knows? there are too many things left up in the air with contracts like this.

  13. wingsfan13 says:

i like briere he's awesome but not worth 10million or 6.5 for 8 yrs.  he is a second line center!!!!  i would pay 5 tops.  the flyers will regret this in 4 years guaranteed.

  14. Labrosse says:

a second line center? what kind of idiot are you calling a 95 pts scorer a second line center?

  15. Labrosse says:

he finished 10th in the league for points so if he his a 2nd line center, so are datsyuk and spezza who finished with less points then briere and ovechkin must be a second line wigner because he had 3 less points then briere, am i right?

  16. Pony says:

Was supposed to get 8 mil? Yes Briere was supposed to be the highest paid player in the league.

  17. Gagne1286 says:

One bad thing is the Flyers won't be able to waive him if his production starts to tail off, due to his no movement clause.

  18. habswinthecup-again says:

Montreal offered a 6/yr$42mill. contract. I am glad that Brierre took Phillies even more ridiculous offer over Montreals.

  19. mojo19 says:

I agree with these other guys, Briere is definitely NOT a 2nd line centre. He's one of the best offensive guys in the league for sure.

  20. MR40 says:

I agree i think it sounds stupid, but might have happend had he not signed with Philly.

  21. nonhl2005 says:

If the cap reverts to a lower number then they will have to adjust salaries accordingly like they did after the lockout.

  22. Penssuck says:

Just listened to the Briere phone call, apparently there were teams willing to pay him more per season.  Some teams offered him over 7mil a season, but he settled for less money with philly.

  23. Penssuck says:

Its brillant because of the front load of cash.  The lower budget teams couldn't compete with that amount of cash, which would limit his options for that amount of money to a few teams.  The money means nothing to the flyers, its all about staying under the cap, so 10 million is just the same as 6.5 for the purpose of a cap hit.  I don't predict him going crazy and scoring a 100 pts in philly, but it sure doesn't hurt the team.

Of course i'm a flyers fan, can't you tell by my "i hate everyone else" attitude?

  24. EasternHockey says:

Briere was supposed to help Montreal?  Really?

  25. Penssuck says:

If that was sarcasim i don't get it.  He wouldn't help the team?

  26. flyersfan10897 says:

its not the price thats out of whack. he could have signed easily for 6.5 a year or more than 7, hell there were rumors of 8 mil.  but 8 seasons is a bit extreme. we arent the islanders.

  27. flyersfan10897 says:

im glad we signed him, but i dont know if thats valid.  it wouldnt be crazy for him to see 10 million the first year and say hell, why not, sure beats 6.5 or 7 mil from that other team.  it might not completely make sense to do that, but its not ridiculous to want to get paid now.

  28. lagsetsfire says:

It's been no secret they were going after a center.

    personally, i like 1) gomez, 2) drury, 3) briere

i though gomez would have been a great fit here, but at least it wan't nylander

this has so much potentional to explode
if briere's production disappears in the flyers system or
drops at the same time the flyers lose or
the rangers and gomez take the division

Clarke had some deals blow up in his face and withstand them, Holmgren could face that challenge this season

  29. lagsetsfire says:

    argggg…Rangers

  30. Connolly4mvp says:

I was listening 2 him on the radio and he said it wasnt about the money because there were oter teams that offered him more than 52 million lol  This definetly wont look 2 good 5 years from now when they got a 5 foot 8 37 year old center makin 6 or 7 million a year. And I really dont see him scoring  more points in philly than in Buffalo either. 2 much money for 2 many years in my opinion. I really wanted him 2 say what teams offered him more than 52 million.

  31. flyersfan10897 says:

actually hes could be traded. if a team is losing money and just wants cheaper players, they could trade a player making 6 million to the flyers for briere, who at the time is making 3 or 2 million.  yes, their cap number will still be 6.5, but the team will only be spending the 3 or 2 million.
