Canadian WJC Selection Camp and Roster Picks

Nothing too major in terms of surprises, although man oh man has Scott Glennie ever dropped off. I think he might have got an invite if Schenn was invited though. Also a little bit of a surprise that no members of the 67’s trio was invited, and especially Toffoli.

2 main issues I see here:

1. Will LAK let Schenn play in the tournament? I’m leaning towards no because he wasn’t an invite, but it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to see him get a last minute call for the tournament if the Kings let him.

2. Gormley’s health. He was included so it looks promising, but you never know.

Anyways, here’s how I think the final roster might shape up, given the assumptions that Schenn will not be released by the Kings and Gormley will be healthy.

Leblanc-Eakin-Kassian (’09, ’09, ’09)
Couturier-Johansen-Connolly (’11, ’10, ’10)
Schwartz-Hishon-Ashton (’10, ’10, ’09)
Ross-Cizikas-Pirri (’10, ’09, ’09)
13th- Nugent-Hopkins (’11)

Gudbranson-Cowen (’10, ’09)
Ellis-Despres (’09, ’09)
Gormley-de Haan (’10, ’09)
7th- Murphy (’11)

Roy (’09)
Pickard (’10)

’09 – 11
’10 – 8
’11 – 3

I think the main weakness is the lack of a go-to centerman. I like the depth up the middle, but ultimately the top 3 guys are all pretty similar in my opinion.

I might be reaching with 3 draft eligible players in the line-up but it definitely could happen with no returning forwards. I see Couturier as a lock anyways. I think RNH would make a great 13th forward and Murphy SHOULD be a lock as a PP specialist.

I LOVE the defense. There is so much starpower here. This is just a really solid group, although it is very heavy on offensive defensemen. However, a shutdown duo of Gudbranson and Cowen should make up for that. I wanted to include Olsen but couldn’t find room.

Roy and Pickard will probably get the inside track for goaltending, although Anderson might be able to steal a spot if he keeps up his great play in camp.

The Americans will be the clear favourites with 9 returning from their gold medal team and on home soil and the Swedes look strong again, but never count Canada out. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if it turned into Canada getting the home-town advantage with it being in Buffalo this year.

Gormley has a dislocated knee cap…. nothing short of a miracle will allow Gormley to be in this tournament… I would be extremely surprised to see him in the line-up

Yeah I didn't know it was that severe at the time I posted this. Good thing Canada's defense core is very deep. Just put Olsen in his place.

Hunwick to Colorado for D prospect Colby Cohen. The dismantiling begins. I love this deal though. I woulda taken anything for Hunwick and Cohen actually has some nice upside. Chia again shows that he has a hard on for American defensemen that came up through college/university, except this time Cohen actually has size. Nice deal. This means Savvy is coming back soon too!

I think we will have our boys do us proud. It is also the best hockey played all year!!!! I LOVE THIS TOURNEY

As a Leafs fan obviously I would love to see Ross make the team. It would be great to see him play and the experience would only strengthen his development I think. That being said i think him and Kassian on the same line would be a nightmare for teams. Two punishing guys who can, skate hit and score sounds like it could be good.

As a secodn or third forward unit, it would be sick.

  7. dumbassdoorman says:

Ya I think they could really bang a lot of skilled lines into submission so to speak. They can both skate, so it could be fun to watch. Anyway it goes i will be cherring loud and proud for our boys!!!!

On Sportsnet they were saying with Savard ready to come back this week or next the bruins might let Seguin go to the World Juniors, which would clear his 3.550mil of the cap. This would give the bruins a month to work out their cap issues.  It would be a huge boost to Canada if he and Schenn were allowed to play.

  10. Boston_Bruins says:

Not gonna happen. They've actually already cleared enough room to get Savard back with that Hunwick trade. They only need to clear more space when Sturm comes back, which can be accomplished by trading/waiving Ryder OR Sturm OR Wheeler and Paille.

  11. BluesMan10 says:

I think they'll try to make room in other ways. Seguin is playing pretty good for the Bruins. He's a good player.

I would offer up Jay McClement and Matt D'Agostini ($2 million dollars)

For Blake Wheeler and Marco Sturm ($5.7 million dollars)

We have more than enough cap space and adding a good scorer like Sturm would be a nice boost and make us into contenders.

    Boyes – MacDonald – Backes
    Steen – Berglund – Sturm
    Wheeler – Winchester – Crombeen
    Porter – Sobotka – Janssen

Then once we get Oshie and Perron back….

    Boyes – MacDonald – Backes
    Perron – Oshie – Sturm
    Wheeler – Berglund – Steen
    Crombeen – Winchester – Janssen

We could be serious contenders by taking advantage of a team with cap issues.

Should I go see Canada vs. Sweden/Russia/Czech Republic? I'm thinking Sweden because of Larsson and Landeskog.

I think any of the games you could get tickets for would be awesome, I however would go see them play Russia. Always a good game between them it seems.
