The Montreal Canadiens acquired forward Petteri Nokelainen and defenceman Garrett Stafford from the Phoenix Coyotes on Sunday in exchange for forward Brock Trotter and a seventh-round draft pick in 2013.

Nokelainen has one assist in five games with the Coyotes this season. The 24-year-old spent last season with Jokerit of the Finnish League, recording 27 points in 46 games. Nokelainen was originally drafted 16th overall by the New York Islanders in 2004 and has also had stops in Boston and Anaheim. He has 35 points in 194 career NHL games.

Stafford has four points in six games with the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League this season. In 2004, the 31-year-old veteran suffered a serious injury in the American Hockey League when Alexander Perezhogin swung his stick at his head, leaving him unconscious on the ice. He was originally signed as a free agent by the San Jose Sharks in 2003.
