Montreal has no future, no present and holes at every posiition.
Chicago is in desperate need for some goaltending depth at cost and needs to dump salary.
So if I was Bob Gainey and I felt like making a trade that didn't suck for once I'd offer up Halak for Sopel and at 1st round pick. Chicago gets to reunite Halak/Huet so they can battle out their medoicre and Chicago dumps a salary for breathing room and getting a player that can have an impact this year. The Habs blueline is ugly enough that Sopel could play quality minutes and who doesn't love a 1st round pick?
An alternative scenario could be….
Halak and PK Subban* for Seabrook, Sopel and a 2nd round pick. Habs get a legitimate young defenseman, a bad contract and a pick while Chicago gets a solid prospect, goaltending and a cap solution.
*Now for those that have decided Subban is a lock for the HoF, I disagree rather than subject me argument over his merits just change the 2nd round pick from Chicago to a 1st in your head as these proposals are meaningless anyway.]]>
To Phily: Jaroslav Halak
To Montreal: 2nd round pick, +?
