  1. What happened to all the comments on the other thread?

It’s a New York vs. L.A. final. Two biggest cities in the U.S.

First time since 1981 that has happened in any sport (Yankees-Dodgers).

Hats off for calling LA. Great series.

Two biggest TV markets, hope for a great series to help grow the game ala 94 where the NYR’s victory was pushing the NHL over the NBA at the time. With the sad state of the current NBA this is hockey’s chance to gain some traction in the US.

Anything to inflate the cap, fingers crossed.

Hats off to Chicago too. I thought they were dead in game 5, let alone game 6 and game 7 OT. The Kings looked totally unstoppable after game 4. But the Hawks almost pulled it off, which speaks to the character of that team. Two great teams.

I came across this today… Not sure how i feel about it.
    Howard Berger,
“The deal I’ve heard sounds more wild than far-fetched: Maple Leafs would trade Dion Phaneuf, Nazem Kadri and their first-round pick – eighth overall – to Florida for veteran Ed Jovanovski and the No. 1 overall selection. It would enable Toronto to draft potential franchise blue-liner Aaron Ekblad of the Ontario Hockey League Barrie Colts. Ekblad would ultimately join Morgan Rielly, Jake Gardiner and Matt Finn to form a young, potentially superb defense unit for the Maple Leafs.”

With the high possibility he could be another Drew Doughty (although only time will tell), I’d think you have to make that trade.

      • 93killer93 says:

I really want the Leafs to find a way to get Ekblad. I would just prefer another piece be coming back from Florida if we’re giving up Kadri too. Something we would be able to potentially flip for a top 6 centre to fill the void.

Hockeybuzz is saying Phaneuf for E.Staal, considering their inability to draw UFAs they may prefer Dion being locked up. Staal at 8.25, ouch that’s no bargain.

On the Ekblad front, Kadri and Phaneuf to move up 7 spots??? We’ll get a good player at 8, Ekblad is boom/bust why risk that much for him?

Interesting rumours if true. The deal for the first overall is just really bad. 2 NHL proven former top 10 picks and another top 10 pick for the first overall in a draft with no real clear and obvious top selection is just a terrible move.

That being said if we can negotiate Florida down and make the Carolina swap we will be in excellent shape.

        Phaneuf for E.Staal

Kadri, 8th overall, Gleason (some retained salary)
        For
        1st overall pick

        Draft Ekblad.

        Deals combined become:

        Phaneuf, Kadri, 8th overall, Gleason

        For

        E.Staal, 1st overall pick, Jovanovski.

We upgrade and get our no.1 center we have been needing since Sundin left, we (hopefully) draft the next Weber or Pronger in Ekblad.

If Ekblad is the elite player we hope then we just upgraded both center and defence and it only cost us is the 8th overall pick. And as an added bonus only have to pay Jovanovski for one season instead of Gleason for 2.

I would way rather Joe Thornton than Eric Staal. Having trouble getting a cycle going? JT is one of the best of all time at that.

I’m a huge Thornton fan and he would be an interesting pick up because he is old but has proven to be durable and has never relied on his skating to make him successful.

I would trade Phaneuf for him absolutely.

What people are forgetting is if we deal Phaneuf for a forward or pick we are going to need to give up more assets to trade for a blueliner. Can’t go into next season with the same blueline minus Phanuef that is ugly.

          • Steven_Leafs0 says:

Definitely agree. Unless those 2 deals happened at the same time (or we got the 1st overall first) then you can’t move Phaneuf for a forward even one as good as Staal or Thornton.

I know the team won’t be that great on the backend next year even if we swap Phaneuf for Ekblad but it is worth it in the long run IMO.

        • leafy says:

Just to play devils advocate, what if Ekblad is another Drew Doughty?

Would you do Phaneuf + Kadri + the 8th pick for Doughty? Of course.

Phaneuf and Kadri are not going to win the Leafs a Stanley Cup. Worth the risk to land a franchise defenceman. All indications are Ekblad is the real deal…although we need to keep Patrick Stephan and Alexander Daigle in mind.

i saw on the same thread in the comments a guy said that he would think about it if jovanovski was changed to gudbranson..

            gudbranson – gardiner
            reilly – ekblad

seems like a great top 4 for years to come and then move bolland up to second line center and sign a steve ott type to fill in the third line role? i wouldnt mind that especially if we signed a scoring winger like a vrbata alson.

            JVR – bozak – kessel
            vrbata – bolland – lupul
            clarkson – ott – komarov

i wouldnt mind that being our top 3 lines either.

Took the words right out of my mouth leafy…

HOWEVER, this franchise needs to take risks…Mediocre players will not benefit this franchise anymore.

It’s a risk…But it’s what the franchise really needs to change the culture.

At worst, Ekblad fails…However, the benefits will mean the Leafs would have the second coming of Seabrook-Keith in Reilly-Ekblad…And a second pairing that will feature Gardiner and most likely another young stud in Finn or Granberg.

And hey, if they collapse next year…Conor McDavid or Jack Eichel would be a possible option.

Just like that, the Leafs could have a possible Stanley Cup threat.
