CAPS LOCK UP SIZE – Biron, Majesky to Washington

FA defensemen Mathieu Biron and Ivan Majesky have signed with the Caps … they are 6’6″ and 6’5″, respectively.

They add some much needed size and grit to ease the eventual loss of Brendan Witt, who has asked for a trade, but the Caps still need more help.

Not too familiar with the Caps back up goalie situation. What do you think of the possibility of trading Witt to the Sabres for Martin Biron? Now that they signed Mathieu I think it could be a possibility.

  2. CaptainInsano says:

I can’t see that happening, at least not this season.

Kolzig has one year left at 4.94 million. Biron will make 2.128 million this year, which is far too much to be paying a backup, even if the Caps will be well below the salary cap.

Unless the Capitals can find someone willing to take Kolzig’s big contract, which doesn’t look to be anytime soon, I don’t see them in the market for a pricey goalie.

Maybe if Kolzig suffers a season ending injury in training camp, they might add someone, but even if Kolzig were gone 6-8 weeks, it might be in Washington’s best interest to go with whatever they have in their system. (Maxime Oullett?)

    If they trade Witt –

    Kraft (pit) for Witt (was)?

Kraft could be the player to give the puck to Ovechkin and Witt will give pitt the grit and defensive presence on the blue line.

  4. Scruffy05 says:

Word from Washington is that Godzilla (Kolzig) wants out of Washington as well.

  5. tacitus says:

wait a second…… Washington still has a NHL team??????

  6. tacitus says:

I’d ask for Kraft and Surovy or Fata and one of them.

  7. Scruffy05 says:

Witt is a pretty decent defenseman. Not saying Kraft isn’t good but I could see it taking more…

How about Witt to the Canucks for Ruutu and a conditional pick?

  8. dan27 says:

Heard Witt might come to Montreal?

  9. tacitus says:

Surovy, Kraft and Fata all have skill and Survy and Fata are as fast as they come. Take any 2 of those 3. I would pull the trigger in a heartbeat

  10. CaptainInsano says:

Yup I heard that, but he’ll prolly be stuck there.

No good team has the cap space for him, and no bad team would bother trading for an older goalie with such a big contract.

I just can’t see him any team in the league that would be a fit for him.

  11. CaptainInsano says:

    You’re joking, right?

  12. CaptainInsano says:

Yeah the rumour I heard was Witt and Martin St. Louis for Komisarek and Plekanec

And by heard I mean made up right now.

I didn’t realize St. Louis was a Capital but according to TSN he is a restricted free agent with them.

But yeah I have heard Montreal might want him which would give them a pretty intimidating blueline.

  13. tacitus says:

Ya Ruutu would barely make the Caps lineup last season or this season or next season

  14. tacitus says:

They did trade Lang for less thou

  15. dan27 says:

What do you mean St. Louis is with the Capitals? Hehe.

I hope we get Witt. That would be kinda cool. And I hope you made up this BS about St. Louis ;). Don’t get me excited!

  16. tacitus says:

Ya that would be a pretty intimadating line up. Thank god players in Detroit can skate backwards which will prove to be an advantage over those Habs and Caps

  17. CaptainInsano says:

Which one of Pittsburgh’s young defense prospects would be the most expendable?

I can’t see them moving Whitney, and for Pittsburgh to give up Orpik for Witt would be redundant for them, but what about Welch?

Washington should stockpile young blueline prospects not more forwards.

  18. CaptainInsano says:

Heh heh it says on TSN, don’t shoot the messenger!

    St. Louis is a Capital!

  19. dan27 says:

    According to TSN… lol

  20. CaptainInsano says:

Lang was a salary dump so there weren’t many takers for his 5 million per year, Witt is more affordable.

Witt made 1.75 million in 2003-2004 before the 24 percent rollback, so a lot of teams should be able to afford him.

He won’t come cheap, believe me.

  21. CaptainInsano says:

By “He won’t come cheap” I meant it would take a lot to trade for him, and he is a restricted free agent right now but I’d be a little surprised if he signed for much more than 2 million.

  22. NemiNA says:

Witt would be great in Montreal. They need a bad ass.

  23. habfan1160 says:

I would very much like to see him come to Montreal. Witt for Rivet and a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick would be okay.

This would be an immediate improvement to our back end:

  24. SabresFan220 says:

Brendan Witt would be a welcome fit to just about every team. The idea of Martin Biron being dealt to the Caps to play with his brother is pretty sketchy. He is too expensive to be a backup to Kolzig, but if Ollie got moved I could see the deal made for Witt.

That would only happen if the Sabres decided that Ryan Miller or Mika Noronen had suddenly stepped up and solidified themselves as the starting goalie. Perhaps Kip Miller can be a throw in because he is Ryan’s cousin?
