Carolina looking to move Jeff Hamilton

The News and Observer provides some interesting speculation with regards to the Hurricanes.

At the end of last week the Hurricanes placed Jeff Hamilton on waivers with the intent that another team would pick him up. Because a team did not pick him up the Hurricanes are forced with a decision. They do not want to send him down to the minors because when he is called up he will have to clear re-entry waivers, which he will not do and then the team will have to pay half of his salary for the balance of this season and next season as well.

It is speculated that the Hurricanes may look to deal Hamilton, but to deal him the likelihood is that the hurricanes will have to take an overpriced veteran play in return. Possible names include Sergei Fedorov or Paul Mara. It should be mentioned that hose two names are only speculation and there is actually no basis attached to those possible players.

Let me understand.. you are allowed to put someone on waivers… and still trade them??

Hmmm. Well if the Canes can get anything out of it they may as well do it quickly, because someone will definitely take this guy off their hands on re-entry (just like Recchi).

Trade him to the Pens for a 5th or 6th rounder.

If a player passes through waivers, he remains property of the team who waived him. Therefore he can be traded by that team.  Even though they waived him, they do not have to demote him to the minors.  He can only be claimed on re-entry if he is sent to the minors then recalled.

    lulz.

Played with Chicago last couple season, signed with Carolina in the summer, if they hadn't gotten Matt Cullen back I think he would have fit in better on the 3rd line, they used him on the point on the PP and had a wicked shot, I think he'd fit in well somewhere for a 3rd or 4th liner.

  5. BruMagnus says:

What EXACTLY does it even mean then to waive a player?

  6. Radio says:

lol, I know who he is. I was attempting to make fun of the assumption that he's relevant. It's like: OMG RORY TO THE LEAFS.

    They're saved for sure.
