The Flyers weren’t going to get a starter for Cechmanek, it’s just that simple.

Clarke got the best deal he could. Maybe he could have waited for a call from Pierre Lacroix, but I don’t think he would have made a better offer.

  2. big_booty says:

While Cechmanek’s value may have diminished with Clarke’s comments, his market value immediately shot back up with Roy’s retirement.

Clarke could have waited for a call from Pierre Lacroix, but I doubt he would have been made a better offer.

As for being “shot in the foot,” I do agree with you, but as has been shown in the past, Clarke is made of teflon. He may have shot himself in the foot, but let’s see where that ricochet ends up.

Do you still think Nabakov is a possibility?

  3. big_booty says:

….the Eagles’ braintrust went out and got players to replace Trotter. Then they played their way to the NFC Championship game.

    Nobody missed Jeremiah then.

  4. Rico71 says:

    Good luck…

Allison and Deadman are never healthy. Great players…but made of aluminium. Too bad.

  5. big_booty says:

Well, I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t wait too long to write my article.

I have to say that I’m surprised that his ouster happened so quickly.

While most of you will say that his trade value was depleted by the comments of Bob Clarke, it would be good to remember the following things:

    1) His trade value immediately jumped back up with Roy’s retirement. Clarke could have been waiting for a call from Pierre Lacroix, but with Roy and the Avs organization lauding David Aebischer, it’s difficult to imaging Lacroix making a better offer.

    2) The Flyers could have gotten nothing for him. There was a strong sentiment from the Cechmanek camp that all he wanted to do was go home to the Czech Republic to be with his family.

    3) They weren’t going to get a starter for him. Number 1 goalie-for-number 1 goalie trades just don’t happen all that often. Were they going to send him to Edmonton for Salo? Or to Chicago for Thibault? Or Vancouver for Cloutier? No. Those are steps in the wrong direction (Clarke knows that), and not something that other GM’s would do for Clarke.

    4) Cechmanek wasn’t coming back. The Flyers didn’t want him back. This was probably the best that could have been done. No one wants to give up their number one picks this year or the next, given the depth of talent in both pools.

If you still think this is a bad deal, consider this: If, in 2000, Clarke traded his sixth-round pick for a #2 in 2004, it would have been called a great deal.

LA gets themselves a new starter, and good for them. They needed it. Stick a fork in the Cat, Potvin is done. However, it remains to be seen how Cechmanek plays in front of a defense that allows more than 200-plus goals.

Hexy wielded his goalie stick like the Grim Reaper used his scythe.

Then when he went postal against Chelios when that arrogant SOB took out Brian Propp in ’86.

Damn, they were the good old days.

    What about Hugh………..

  10. OldNord says:

Are you serious? I’m sure you wrote for the sake of writing. Forget all this shit about RFA group II, none GM will try to “steal” a player from an other GM with the negociation soon they must stay united.

Anyway, even if Philly’s trying to get Giguere this summer and will don’t have it even if they offer 5 millions a year. Anaheim will match it.

  11. Freeze says:

I’m one of those rare individuals who believes that Philly should have stuck with Cechmanek. The guy lost in the playoffs to the best team in the NHL in the regular season. He was good enough to shut out the Senators twice in round 2 and good enough to beat Toronto in 7 in round 1. It’s true that he faded in games 5 and 6 against Ottawa, but so did the rest of the team. I think the Flyers ran out of gas as a result of a physical series with the Leafs. Keep in mind that Cechmanek stood on his head last year against Ottawa in the playoffs, but got no support from his goal scorers.

Cechmanek is 1 of 58 NHL goalies who are watching Brodeur and Giguere battle for the Cup. Do the other 58 goalies get traded because they aren’t playing in the Finals?

I think I would have traded Mr. Useless – Keith Primeau – long before I traded Cechmanek. Trading Cechmanek to LA for a #2 reminds me of when Calgary traded Giguere to Anaheim for a #2. When you’re Bobby Clarke looking for a scape goat, trades like this happen.

  12. MantaRay says:

I don’t think Clarke waited long enough to see Cech’s value rise. A second round pick is embarrassing, but its done.

Regarding Nabakov, it depends what ownership is directing Doug Wilson to do. If they don’t sign Selanne and deal Damphousse they may keep him just as a stop gap. But if they end up doing a salary dump—he’s fair game.

I would say the Flyers have a 30% chance of nabbing him. If they do anything else it will be centered around draft day.

  13. flyersdude123 says:

    according to your theory…

“If you look at it that way it does make sense. Now they have that money in hand and can pick and choose who they want to go after rather than being constrained in a trade. It seems what they gained most in this trade is freedom.”

That is a joke; are you saying that its all that great to have freedom? Then why don’t you trade Kapanen, Gagne, Williams, ect, so you can have freedom with money?! 3 million is nothing for a #1 starting goalie w/ the best save % and GAA. The Flyers were not contrained with Cechmanek, they were in great shape.

  14. flyersdude123 says:

3 million?!?!?!?!?!?!?! yo budddddddddyyyyyy… do you live in a hole??

Have you seen the numbers Jiggy has put on in the playoffs?! Colorado will probably offer him at least 7 mill, and the Ducks will match that.

  15. flyersdude123 says:

By the way, you didn’t have to tell us you don’t work for the Flyers, we can already see that!

  16. jofa says:

“If you still think this is a bad deal, consider this: If, in 2000, Clarke traded his sixth-round pick for a #2 in 2004, it would have been called a great deal.”

Not if his sixth-round pick was a goalie like Cechmanek! This logic is a little messed up, as there are lots of great late round players and a lot of crappy first round picks who never make it to the nhl. Regardless of when they are picked, their value is determined by their success or lack thereof in the pros.

Although Cechmanek had a rough couple playoffs, he’s consistently been a top goalie for the Flyers, and is definitely worth more than a 2nd round pick that may never make the team.

  17. bender says:

    Bender likey a lot!!!!!

Except it would have been fun watching you squirm if he landed in an Aves UNI!!!

At least now I know the Oilers are safer, in there playoff hunts for years to come.

  18. Flyers_01 says:

I guess that makes every player in the league untradable as they could all retire and go home rather than be traded? Cechmanek say’s he’s happy to be in LA .. imagine that when everyone on this board has him pegged as retiring for some unknown reason.

  19. defenestrate says:

Except Clarke, who couldn’t find his %$#@ teeth.

  20. defenestrate says:

Watching me squirm? You’re a little twisted sometimes, junior…..

  21. defenestrate says:

In that case, I wish for Oprah and Dr. Phil to do a “custard-wrestling” show.

  22. matteo says:

I don’t remember that line from the Holy Grail….but I like it….I am writing John Cleese a letter first thing tomorrow………

  23. matteo says:

You must have the gift of precognition…..either that or you somehow know what discussions Clarkie had with other teams.

Second of all he didn’t have the best save % and GAA. He had the second best GAA and I am not sure where his SP was but it wasn’t number one.

That aside…..maybe he knew that he wouldn’t get that much for him….maybe he did it to make Svoboda happy so that he could more easily sign Malek and get him over to the Phantoms…..there are a million possibilities. All I know is that the deal is done and all the crying in the world isn’t going to do a damn bit of good.

I based my THEORY on what Ken Hitchcock said this morning on the radio…..so go wallow in your own bastardy and take those clamps off your nipples ya crazy pumpkin pie haircutted freak.

PS……3 million is nothing to sneeze at, especially if Esche is their answer…..it’s more money to use to fix the powerplay.

PPS……stop touching your sister like that….the rest of us stopped last week.

  24. matteo says:

that subject line of “Ican see the future now” with Pelle Lindbergh after it struck me as very ironic….especially seeing as how he never even saw that wall…………(i now bow my head in shame for that joke)..he he he he

    Lando Calrissian

    Leggo my eggo…….

  25. matteo says:

Well since we are wishing….can I have 15 vestal virgins, a nine iron, 3 bags of sea monkeys, a stuffed platypus, 1 quart of astro-glide, a naked picture of Rue McLanahan(don’t want to finish too soon), 13 rubber Ronald Reagan masks, 4 large ladles and a sweedish stewardess named Inga.

IS that too much to ask for?

  26. matteo says:

I can’t resist the opportunity for a good Full Metal Jacket quote….

“The duality of man sir….you know that Jungian thing…”

“you better get your head and your ass wired together Marine or I will take a giant shit on you”

    “sir yes sir”

  27. bender says:

Should I ask out the amazingly beautiful blonde named Laurie or should I wait a bit for the amazingly gorgeous Brunette Brittany????

And what are the 6/47 lotto numbers for next week???

  28. bender says:

Hey has anybody stopped to realize what an amazing job Clarkey has done stocking our team with tons of draft picks, GOOD ones as well!!!!!!

We have tons this year, and now he’s loading up for 2004.

The 2010’s will be owned by Philly, can you say dynasty. LOL

  29. bender says:

    Mr. Useless?????????? Keith Primeau????

What doesn’t the guy do that please you!!!! Should he come up during intermissions and refill your beer, make sure you have popcorn during TV timeouts. make sure you and your 2 buddies make it home after a night out.

He plays decent offense, great defense, powerplay, and penalty kill….

He Hits, scores grinds, passes, FIGHTS, and anything else the team needs him to do he does it…..and he doesn’t complain when they stick him on the third line with MR. “I’M A GOAL SCORER NOW NOT A FIGHTER” Brashear. Sure you don’t score and get great chances when your playing with a Hasian sasquatch!!!!!!

Cechmanek was the big let down……..BEAT TO IN 7, A great goalie would have beat them in 5, the team dominated and he was the weak link as usual

We could have beat Ottawa, who blows a 2 goal lead in the first game, when the other team has had a huge layoff….Forget the Shutouts, Look at the games he played like a Froot Loop, and let us beat ourselves, ALL the Goal support in the world doesn’t help, if you know your goalie has the ability of a street hooker, letting all the boys score!!!!

Granted we could have used a better powerplay, but that’ll come in time, when was the last time we had a decent powerplay….When Tim Kerr was standing in front of the net. Maybe we should get TIMMY to play goal, at least he knew where his position was.

I’m not gonna miss seeing quick forwards drive around the net and tuck in easy ones against the One Brow wonder, ARE YOU???

  30. big_booty says:

Dude, Cronin was right about you.

  31. Freeze says:

Gee, I wonder why Primeau didn’t do the things you just mentioned in the playoffs this year, or last year. He played in 13 games and ended up with 1 goal, 1 assist and was a +/- minus 2. Brasher’s numbers were slightly better with 1 goal, 2 assistes, and +/- minus 1.

Primeau was also the guy who led the locker room revolt against Bill Barber last year. One might think that Mr. Primeau would make amends for that exercise in back stabbing along with his 0 goals, 0 assists, and -3 from last year. Not a chance. Who does Primeau blame for his incompetence this Year? Ken Hitchcock? The anthem singer?

You are so right. His time would have been better used if he had refilled my beer and picked up some popcorn for me.

  32. matteo says:

What does that mean? Cronin as in Pat Cronin?

  33. Flyers_01 says:

I seem to remember Kirkland getting beat repeatedly in the Tampa Bay game including for that 70 or so yard passing play that got Tampa Bay rolling on offense.

My main complaint is that there’s no question the Eagles could’ve gotten a decent draft pick in return for Trotter (I think the league gave them a 4th anyway but a trade should’ve netted something better).

  34. defenestrate says:

Have they checked your litium levels lately, son?

  35. defenestrate says:

  37. defenestrate says:

“Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelled of elderberries”.

  38. bender says:

    So Primeau blamed Barber!

    YOur blaming Primeau!

WHo’s blaming u on this wonderful cycle we call Philly Hockey?

  39. bender says:

Sorry Dad, must be too much late partying, then sneaking drunkedly in through my window, after hours of debauchery with naked COED’s, trying to not wake u and MA!

If you have naked coeds, and you’re not at least sharing pictures with SCTP, we need to talk……

That – was SCTP material… but I’m still touching his sister (I have latex gloves on).

  44. flyersdude123 says:

No one threw around this rumor yet, so I will

What do you think about the Flyers trying to trade for Detriot’s back-up Legace? He can duke it out with Esche for the starting job.

  45. defenestrate says:

  46. flyersdude123 says:

your comments really do make yourself sound like a gay fag

  47. flyersdude123 says:

Why don’t you go touch your mom with your gloves, I’m sure she would enjoy just as much as you

  48. bender says:

    That 70’s show rules,

I’m not a huge Clarke supporter, I was just making an obvious statement!!!!!

  49. bender says:

Sorry, I didn’t think you’d be interested, Lucy Lui didn’t show!!!
