Chris Pronger Trade Rumors

Jun 25 The Florida Panthers inquired about Pronger Saturday, but backed off due to Edmonton’s proposal, according to the New York Post.

Recommendation: The rumor mill has it that Edmonton GM Kevin Lowe asked for Jay Bouwmeester, Nathan Horton and Florida’s first round pick in the draft (10th overall) in exchange for Pronger. It seems Edmonton is willing to honor the defenseman’s trade request, but the asking price will not be cheap. The Rangers, Coyotes and Senators are expected to jump in the sweepstakes, but they should prepare to pony up a steep price to Edmonton in the early stages of trade negotiations. Stay tuned.

Agreed. Or make it Bouwmeester and a 1st Rd Pick. I’d hate to have to part with Horton if I were the Panthers.

  2. Gretzkin says:

I like that idea. Of course, I haven’t looked at the payrolls, but any team that wants to steal a RFA just needs to offer and the Wild need to match right?

Though, in this case, I would imagine they’ve thought of this considering all of the transactions they’ve made revolve around Gaborik.

    Demitra, Parrish, Carney, Jonsson?

They’ve done their homework in this case, but you bring up a great point of things that will happen in the near future regarding RFA’s

  3. tancred says:

Exactly. I forget which article it was on ESPN.com, but an anonymous GM told ESPN (Hradek specifically, I think) that he thought Lowe had to trade Pronger prior to July 1st. Otherwise, teams would just go out and sign defensive free agents to get the defensive help they needed. Since Lowe waited/couldn’t get anything done by now, his potential trading partners have all been reduced.

So that narrows it down somewhat–what teams need defensive help, and didn’t really get anything done in that department today? Perhaps whichever teams those are are now the front-runners in trading for Pronger?

  4. Enigma says:

Sens wont want him if Pronger is unwilling to go there. Why would they acquire him if he could just ask for a trade again!!!.

  5. Rysto says:

    Here’s a question I have.

What if Lowe didn’t Trade Pronger, and Pronger refused to show up to work?

Would the Oilers have to pay him?

Would his salary count against the cap if he refused to honour his contact and held out?

Remember Alexei Yashin? He had 1 year remaining on his contract with Ottawa when he staged his holdout in the 1999-2000 season. Ottawa suspended him without pay for the season. In the offseason, Ottawa took Yashin to an arbitrator who ruled that Yashin had to honour the final year of his contract. So Yashin ended up playing the entire 2000-2001 season with Ottawa, and he had to play well for us so that he could get a big contract in the offseason when he became an RFA.

So there’s definitely a major precedent for this situation, and it’s not a good one for Pronger.

I’m not sure whether Pronger’s salary would count against the cap or not. My gut says no, if he’s suspended without pay.

  6. Viller02 says:

You have to give up 3 first round picks(or is it still 5?) if you sign a RFA at more than 5million$.

I’d rather not go for a top defender at all and just fill in with others, then deal JayBo AND Horton AND a #1! Lowe is f’ing nuts! maybe JayBo Wiess and a 2nd rounder or something. But Horton is not leaving us.

  9. 19AVSFANFoLIFE19 says:

Marc Staal and Prucha and u say half way to 60% there? hmmmmmm you do realize with the staal brothers it goes from oldest to youngest in terms of skill right?

  10. tacitus says:

If im flordia i dont let go of Horton or Boumeester. To me the price went down cuz do u really want an unhappy Pronger back in Edmonton. You think he would play as well as he did in the post season if hes pissed for not being traded? Any team making a bid for Pronger will have to repair any holes in the line up that they trade away. If im Ottawa i dont offer much more then Havlat whos gonna walk anyway and a 2nd rounder. The Rangers, should offer Staal, Prucha and a 2nd rounder, or maybe Staal Prucha and Tyuitin.

  11. LeafsLeafsLeafs says:

same shit different texture man, stop trying to create arguements where there are none to be had…

  12. Doctor says:

he said that if lowe waited until after july 1st, then he would have to wait for a while (the entire summer) because free agency is more appealing.

  13. Doctor says:

that theory does not work for a player like gaborik because he will cost around 6.5 million- maybe less with this elias signing. it would sink the team that steals him for years because of their lost draft picks, unless we’re talking a completely loaded team like the sens, but still, they would feel the loss one day.

  14. edmontonrules says:

I kinda don’t think the reason that Pronger wants to move is because he’s in a Canadian city. It’s not up to him where he goes, he doesn’t get to approve to disapprove a trade.

  15. Gretzkin says:

    Nice one.

Show if that’s the case, it shows that Kevin Lowe has major leverage here in terms of getting a trade, and he need not rush into anything.

  16. Gretzkin says:

I tend to exaggerate my trade proposals in this situation a wee bit, but you have to keep in mind we’re talking about Chris Pronger who is completely proven, you know exactly what you get, and for 4 years at a 1 million dollar discount.

The Rangers have only just brought themselves back to the post season after what some would say an unexpected season, but they are rebuilding with strong Czech leadership. Those guys aren’t going to be around much longer, and they’ve got some really solid goaltending in Lundqvist.

Pronger (or the like) was exactly what the Rangers were missing last year.

Marc Staal is unproven at the NHL level, yes, he’s a Staal, and by your deductions, the 2nd crappiest of the 4, but Chris Pronger with a 4 year contract would be worth a trade, and considering people think Lowe is in Sather’s pocket (which I disagree with), maybe at the end of Pronger’s deal, Sather could make a move to get Staal back into the works after the Oilers developed him for 4 years or so.

Prucha is a skilled winger, no doubt, but he is tiny and succeptable to injury. Didn’t he miss about 15 games with a shoulder injury last year? So his durability is a question mark

Maybe offering those 2 is more than 60% of the way there, but it’s definitely not a good offer without adding more.

  17. Gretzkin says:

It’s nice to see Kevin Lowe has his priorities straight.

  18. LeafsJaysRapsBillsManU says:

Yeah, but wouldn’t Lowe find it preferable to trade Pronger to the East? Obviously, if a western team makes a substantial offer then, yeah, jump all over it, but I see the East to be less dangerous trading partners. A trade to SJ could end up coming back to bite Edmonton.

I think you need to remove the foot I just inserted in your ass. Try again.

  21. nyrhockey094 says:

Dude Staal and Prucha only 60% of the way there? LMFAO do you have any idea what your talking about. Staal is gonna be one of the top defensman in the league. Staal, Sauer, First round pick and Montoya should be enough to get him

  22. nyrhockey094 says:

Prucha had 30 goals as a rookie, hes tiny but he hits and can score. Not even the old rangers would make that trade. Prucha Staal +++??? And what that + might be is a first round pick and montoya or sauer? They might as well throw every other prospect in with that trade because they are already giving away their future if they do. Even Staal immonen 1st Round pick and Montoya…. those are 3 great prospects + a first round pick.

  23. nyrhockey094 says:

Staal Prucha Tyutin? Nooooooooo thats way to much. Tyutin is a proven defenseman whos already great at his young age. Prucha may not score 30 goals next year but at least 20. Hes a great finisher. Staal can go because hes not proven anything yet. Staal Immonen/ Sauer + 1st round pick and montoya is what i would give.

That Chorley chick used to be my student teacher in high school. She was actually hot back in the day but i dont find her attractuve anymore. i would sooner do Jennifer Martin then Chorley since i have seen both of them in public before.

  26. edmontonrules says:

So because his brother is a pretty good player it means he will be? His brother will make the NHL and he’ll probably stay in it for at least a couple of years, but I doubt he’ll make an impact such as a Chris Pronger does.
