Clarke Slams Leafs!

The Philadelphia Flyers GM was pretty angry about the firing of Leafs head coach Pat Quinn…From TSN.ca “Philadelphia Flyers head coach Ken Hitch***** isn’t the only one on his team who can go on an animated tirade.

The Flyers may be down 2-0 in their first-round playoff series with the Buffalo Sabres, but it hasn’t stopped colourful general manager Bob Clarke from voicing his opinion on hockey matters, notably the state of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In an interview Tuesday with the Toronto Sun, Clarke said he spoke to recently-fired Maple Leafs head coach Pat Quinn and did not hide his displeasure at the way the two-time Jack Adams Award winner was treated in his final days with the club.

“He got (expletive) in Toronto,” Clarke told the Sun. “That was really wrong.”

“He is a lot more classy than I am. His goalie (Ed Belfour) was hurt. His centre (Mats Sundin) was hurt. Even with that, his team just missed the playoffs.”

Quinn, who coached Clarke for four NHL seasons in Philadelphia, had a winning record in each of his seven years behind the bench in Toronto and only missed the playoffs twice in his 19 years as a head coach.

“Look at the tradition he had built there, and this is how he gets treated?” Clarke told the Sun. “There has got to be some kind of loyalty out there.

“You look at what (expletive) happened there and you have to wonder: Who would want to work in Toronto? What’s going to happen next year? Are they going to fire the new coach if he doesn’t make the playoffs?

“What the (expletive) is going on in our business with all these coaches and GMs being fired? A lot of good teams didn’t make the playoffs this year. And by next week, a lot more good teams will be out, too.”

Clarke then compared Quinn’s firing to putting the family pet down.

“It’s like taking the dog down to the vet. (Say) goodbye,” Clarke told the Sun.

“Listen, even if they thought Pat needed to change his coaching style or something, they could have offered to make him the team president or something. Look at his track record there. Look at the (expletive) success he had there.”

Clarke also told the Sun he did not place the brunt of the blame on Maple Leafs general manager John Ferguson, all but indicating that he was pointing further up the front office ladder.

Files from the Toronto Sun were used for this report.”

I hate Clarke, but agree with him on alot of subjects, and this is one. Quinn freakin rules, and John Ferguson should be tarred and feathered.

The fan 590 in Toronto was discussing some of Clarke’s more memorable coach firings, like the one on Christmas eve … and his treatment of Roger Nielsen…

Amazing that he was able to say what he said with a straight face.

    Pot, meet kettle.

i find that more and more people are shooting down leafs management these days… im really surprised JFJ is keeping his job for next year. They should make Quinn GM fire ferguson haha, thatd be good.

The sun also reported that Ferguson responded by pointing out that the flyers were going to be knocked out in the first round.Ferguson is a dick who deserves to rot out on the streets

Clarke fired 3 coaches with winning records and Roger Neilson “becaue he got caner”. Once Neilson was healthy and able to resume his coaching duties, Clarke fired him saying “We couldn’t put him behind the bench, he went goofy on us”. Clarke slammed the Leafs and the rest of the NHL for their lack of loyalty, yet he has never shown any loyalty, heart compasion, ect. I realize that the team had to move on, they couldn’t wait for Roger to get better. But I do think that he deserved a chance (If he wanted to) to come back to the organization in some other role, and to be dumped like a peice of garbage. Clarke is a complete jerk. He wonders if the Leafs will fire the new coach if they don’t make the playoff next year. Sheer stupidity. He’s mearly trying to stir up shit. The Leafs didn’t fire Quinn becuase he missd the playoffs, they did it because JFJ has an opportunity to get “his guy” in here to coach “his team”. JFJ hasn’t got much time left to show what he can do, he needed a fresh face in here that will coach the players that he has to work with. Quinn brought in many of the players on this roster and some of them shouldn’t have been playing(IE Antropov), but were because they were Quinn’s “gets”. Clarke should keep his mouth shut regarding “loyalty”, becuase he clearly has none. I wonder if Clarke will fire Hitch***** if Philly gets bounced in the first round?

John Fergusons an ass hole… yes, Clarke’s team is in a difficult position, but at least it’s not on the golf course!

I’m really starting to hate the Leafs… not the players so far, but the non-player aspects, and if they go ahead and load up on Euro’s, I’ll really hate them.

I kinda gotta agree on your points, but if anyone but Clarke had said it, it[‘d be bang on.

And Roger Nielson once said the reason he was fired is because Bobby Clarke didn’t want a cancer patient who is friends with Eric Lindros behind the bench.

i agree except for the euros part. try not to be openly racist, say you want Canadians, but don’t bash European players (who abesolutely owned mens hockey in the olympics)
