Colin Campbell Still Emotional Since Rangers Fired Him

Eric Lindros has been suspended for a high stick slash on Montreal Canadien Stephane` Quintal, during last night’s 4-1 vicoty for the Habs.

The slash caused no blood, no injuries, and was a simple two minute penalty just like any other slash. This was totally unecessary by the league as we have witnessed many slashes on players’ faces which caused bleeding and injuries, yet no suspensions.

I saw the infraction, and I agree with the description Micki has provided. However, I will reserve judgement on the suspension until I see how Campbell punishes similar incidents as the season progresses.

On a completely selfish note, now the Pens get to play a Lindros and Bure free Ranger’s club tonight!!!!

  2. SabresFanB says:

Colin Campbell is the most inconsistent person in the entire world. Next week we’ll see some guy take a 2 handed chop at someone and get the same suspension that Lindros is getting.

  3. ProngerBlues44 says:

I have always hated this guy. I have noticed, as I am sure other fans have, he seems to have something personal with many players in the league. I have noticed: Bill Guerin, Steve Smith, Kelly Buchberger, Chris Pronger, Eric Lindros, Donald Brashear, Keith Tkachuk, among others. I know it sounds crazy, but these guys check a guy into the boards and it seems like they get a 2-game suspension.

Yup. That Colin Campbell sure knows how to hold a grudge. I’ll bet he just hates the Rangers, ever since they fired him and all. Oh, he’ll get them back, you can bank on that. Just you wait and see.

That is, of course, what this is all about.

Never mind the fact that, upon review, it looks like Lindros is doing a two-handed chopping motion on Quintal while planted on his ass. I’m looking at it right now, and that’s what I see. I don’t know, maybe Eric got pissed when Quintal went for his nuts and not the puck. Now I didn’t see it when it happened, I’m just describing it as I see it now. Campbell must see it that way, too.

Nah, this is all about Campbell versus Cablevision. We all know what he’s thinking. “Damn them Rangers. Damn them all to hell!”

  5. mikster says:

Yeah and just liek last season where Purinton high sticked/cross check motion like that Caps guy and nothing happened, no injuries, no blood no nothing…and he gts a 7 game suspension for that. While dear Mr. A-hole Varada uses his butt-end of the stick and hits Eric’s eye, which causes lots of blood and he gets suspended for 3 games.

I love the game of hockey, but this League is a complete joke.

  6. SabresFanB says:

Varada deserved that 3 game suspension. I doubt that he was trying to hit Lindros in the eye with the butt end of his stick. It was just a careless use of his stick which deserves a 3 game suspension.

  7. buckman says:

You guys all have to be kidding me!!

Did any of you watch the game?

Lindros showed total disregard with his stick.

What was he swinging at….the puck? You’re about 6 feet too high Eric.

That was a totally justified suspension, and he’s lucky he didn’t get more. He did that in frustration and was lucky he didn’t take out his eye. You’d think a guy with his history would have more respect for the safety of others!!

  8. mikster says:

You know that the butt-end of the sticks always sticks out, and he punched Lindros on the eye making it look like it was just “battling”, but Varada is know to be one of the dirtiest players in the league. Misusage of stick with blood + injury should be more than just 3 games.

  9. mikster says:

No blood, no injuries, 2 minute penalty, shouldn’t be a suspension. Simple as that. It was a simple slash intended or not just like the SO many others we’ve seen.

You know what then, every slash that hits a players head should count as a one game suspension. There. That is what i want to see….if someone hits someone else’s helmet with the stick, i want that player to be suspended.

Its only game 2 of the 20020-03 season and already the conspiracy theories are being introduced.

Campbell is probably happy he got fired because the Rangers have been far worse since he left.

Its always the conspiracy against the sad sack Ranger$ and bad coaching (Campbell, Muckler, Low, and soon Trottier) that always get the blame for poor drafting, trades and horrible free agent acquistions.

Lets face it, even with a $75 million salary base the Rangers are still NOT a very good team. Even with all the newer players this year they still gave up the second most goals against in the pre-season.

They will still struggle to make the playoffs.

this year and they have no one to blame but management.

  11. mikster says:

So you called up Campbell, and since you know everything you think your opinion is the obvious and right one.

Most of the young players were playing in the pre-season, and many of those goals were PP goals against them. You left out some facts there.

You can face anything you want, your opinion should be respected, but don’t try to make it sound like if it is a fact.

You have to fire a coach that doesn’t get the players going. Campbell never did a good job, even when the Rangers went to the Cup Semi-Finals, beat the Devils and lost to the Flyers. Campbell was like the mascot.

It took Muckler 4 games to figure out that he ought to put Hlavac-Nedved-Dvorak together, he couldn’t motivate the players into doing anything. Low was a great coach in a sense that he did care so mcuh about his team, but he never punished or worked anyone hard. He couldn’t work the PK and the PP. Keep polishing that cheap crystal ball of yours when saying ‘soon Trottier’. So far Trottier has worked this team hard and has a good system going with them, especially the PK.

Neil Smith did poor drafting. Malhotra 1st round? Brendl instead of Havlat? So far Neil Smith’s best picks in recent years have been York, Kloucek, Lundmark, Cloutier. Sather has built a great Hartford Wolfpack team through drafting, and so far most of his picks are considered good. His trades have also been good too. Unlike Neil Smith who gave up too many players.

Lets face it, even with a $75 million dollar salary, the Rangers are a good team to make the playoffs. Very good goaltending, decent defense, speed, size, toughness, and good coaching staff.

Again, in the preseason a lot of young players played, and a lot of the goals were against the PK, which has killed 15 out of 16 in two games. Not much meaning since it’s the begining of the season, but i could tell right away that they played a system tough by the coaching staff.

Many teams could struggle to make the playoffs this season. Teams that don’t have the offense not working in what is now a fast paced scoring style hockey, will struggle to make the playoffs.

You need to be less biased, regardless of what i’ve written, which i admitt came from a Rangers fan point of view, you still have to be less biased.

  12. mikster says:

This was an article on Lindros doing a slash that we see many times, and sometimes cause injuries, and that there was no need to suspend him….

You wrote something that had nothing to do with Lindros’ slash. You only said one dull thing about Campbell and then went on to criticizing the Rangers…..

    Good one Manta :)

  13. laserman says:

I saw the game, and Lindros first chopped down low with his stick. If he stops there, he don’t even get a penalty but you saw where the second one landed. He did both from the seat of his pants, so the refs were watching. Does it warrant a suspension? Lets wait to see what similar infractions draw…

  14. saiklo says:

I have to agree as the Pens are WAXING them tonight

  15. tgray says:

I saw a replay of this hit, and I think it falls somewhere under the description of the league “setting the tone early.” The beginning of every season has the same symptoms, tons of obstruction penalities and touchy suspensions. Sure, this will not be considered “suspension-worthy” come this spring, but now it is.

The real question is why does the league insist on doing this every year. Carting out the rulebooks and having the officials call 15-20 penalities a game. We all know come playoff time this will not happen.

Personally I think the league stresses the same rules and guidelines to the officials all the time, however when the stakes are lower in the beginning of the season they don’t mind blowing the whistle. When teams are gearing up for the playoffs and the games have more at stake they put the whistles away.

  18. mikster says:

    And Varada is an angel.

  19. Nevermind says:

I agree 100% that Colin Campbell should be replaced. He is a joke. Bozo the Clown has more common sence than this man. What the leauge needs is a former Lady Byng winner (eg, Mike Bossy) to take over his job. I’m quite sure that he’ll do a better job…

  20. MantaRay says:

Just a knee jerk reaction to a silly piece.

The article on the Lindros slash was useless in of it self.

The object of the piece was too criticize Colin Campbell for doing his job, even though it hurt your team. Lindros deserved his suspension, get over it.

  21. MantaRay says:

He needs to divert attention from the fact that the Ranger$ are not that good regardless of how much he wants everyone else to believe otherwise.

Its an annual event here at HTR

  22. MantaRay says:

If anyone is guilty of exercising bias it is you.

I merely pointed out the facts, which you are either too blind or too ignorant to accept.

The Rangers do not have the talent or enough depth to do much damage this year. Lets not even getting into the lacky coach thing.

Last night 6-0 drubbing at the hands of the lowly Penguins just put an exclaimation point to it.

  23. MantaRay says:

“After reviewing the play, I deserved the suspension”—Eric Lindros

So we can stop with the crybaby conspiracy excuses.

  24. big_booty says:

I’ll take the over on that one. Easy money.

  25. pat says:

I have to totally disagree with you. I am a Ranger fan and frankly I am surprised Lindros only got 1 game. That hit could have caused a lot more damage.

On the same note….why the Hell wasn’t Guerin suspended for the hit he layed on the AHLer in Dallas’ training camp? I think McSorley would have found that slash uncalled for!

  26. MantaRay says:

He’ll have over 25 before the end of the month. Sucker bet.

  27. mikster says:

“Campbell is probably happy he got fired because the Rangers have been far worse since he left.”

Fact? No…nothing to back it up.

“Its always the conspiracy against the sad sack Ranger$ and bad coaching (Campbell, Muckler, Low, and soon Trottier) that always get the blame for poor drafting, trades and horrible free agent acquistions.”

Fact? Nothing to back it up.

“Lets face it, even with a $75 million salary base the Rangers are still NOT a very good team. Even with all the newer players this year they still gave up the second most goals against in the pre-season.”

Fact? No, not even close. Just guess work…and poor prediction of a team that hasn’t even had its full roster on the ice yet, and has only played 3 games. Plus, the lines aren’t set yet.

“They will still struggle to make the playoffs.

this year and they have no one to blame but management.”

Fact? I just call that personal opinion.

What facts did you point out? None. ALl guess work and opinions.

I respect your OPINION on the Rangers depth, but your turning your opinions into facts.

Last night the Rangers didn’t have Lindros, Bure, Richter played the night before and a goalie comes in not as focused like that as when projected to start the game. Ask any goalie.

The defense was sloppy, the Rangers did outplay the Penguins in every category except for goals. No scoring power, too bad of a 1st period to even watch the rest of the game. But, first few games of the season, new team, new coaching staff, Rangers will come in strong by December.

  28. mikster says:

He deserves it if every player throughout the season gets a suspension for similar actions.

  29. Obcd says:

It’s the intention that count, he wanted to hit Quintal and he deserved a suspension. 1 game isn’t enough 3 would be ok. And all others with injuries should go up, let’s say 10 games.
