Contenders line up for Smyth

Ryan Smyth is getting plenty of interest as the trade deadline nears.

A looming unrestricted free agent on July 1 with 16 goals and 18 assists in 51 games with the Oilers heading into Saturday, Smyth is going to have to decide whether he wants to head to a contender before the clock strikes zero on Feb. 27.

Sources say there’s at least four teams — including the Rangers, Sharks, Bruins and Wings — that have expressed interest with Edmonton GM Steve Tambellini.

If Smyth does decide to waive his no-movement clause, there won’t be any tears shed. The 35-year-old could easily go to a contender as a pure rental, take the chance to win the Stanley Cup and then return to the Oilers.Confirm or deny: The cellar-dwelling Blue Jackets may finally be ready to accept reality and they could be willing to deal captain Rick Nash. If that’s the case, they’re going to want a big return: A top young player, a prospect and a first-round pick. The Rangers and Kings are interested. But Nash’s $7.8-million cap hit through 2018 is going to make it difficult for that to happen. Sounds like the kind of deal that needs to be made in the off-season. The first priority for the organization is to get C Jeff Carter moved. The Leafs certainly have interest

I would love to get Jeff Carter but I don't think the price would be too steep because of his contract. If Burke goes after him I would offer:

    To Tor:

    To Clb:
    Schenn and a 1st in 2012

That's it. I understand Carter has huge potential and Howson wants to get rid of him and his contract but can't be too picky.

probably a deal Toronto should do and probably would make them much better but I wouldn't do it, and the funny thing is I bet Columbus would want a little more. Like a 3rd rounder or a prospect like D'Amigo.

I'm not sure I agree. We don't have a pressing need for goal scoring, in fact we have it in spades. Carter isn't and never has been a top line center, meaning he doesn't fit our needs, and he doesn't use the size he has like we need from someone that size. I'd much prefer to use those assets on someone like Berglund or just keep them.
