Could Souray be headed to New York?

The New York Post is continuing speculation that Sheldon Souray may be on his way to the Big Apple.

They are reporting that although it seems unlikely due to cap reasons “the buzz continues.” While the Rangers are nearing their cap limit they are allowed to go over the cap by 10% until the start of the season. HTR believes that the Rangers will make a big play for Souray despite the salary cap and will make moves if necessary later to ensure that they are able to fit him into their lineup.

In any regard … it will be interesting.

I guess they could pull this off…They'd have to dump a lot of salary though.
I could see them trying for sure. It's surprising he hasn't signed yet. The Habs seemed to have moved on from him, so I wonder what he's doing. Probably waiting for a California team to try to pick him up, San Jose may not have the cap room(someone correct me if I'm wrong here).

By the way, i only mentioned San Jose because for sure Anaheim can't afford him now, though that would be one fearsome defense eh?

And LA it seems to me has spent a lot of money already…

At this point, I think Souray screwed himself. He waited way too long for the perfect offer, and now, there's no place left for him in California, unless San Jose really wants him and proceed to a trade to free up some cap room.

I think Souray's best move now would be to sign a 1-yeal deal with New York, and hope for the best. New York, in my opinion, is the best place to go for him right now; a place where he could actually post the same kind of numbers he did last season with Montreal. Then hit the free agents market again, and sign the first long-term deal you get. Souray over-valued himself.

Yeah the Rangers could pull this off but Souray is not worth the money people will start throwing at him. I mean truly Souray stepped up as a great scorer this past season but look what happened to McCabe when he could no longer use his shot as much. Expect a drop in Souray's numbers next year, if he finds a team. McCabe at least has a bit of a defensive game to back up his contract. Since Souray is looking for McCabe numbers, I don't see any team taking him. And what happened to the Rangers still trying to get Shanny. They would be better off trying to sign Shanny and maybe a 1-2 mill defenceman. AS far as i am concerned, Souray has screwed himself.

If it happens it could be a good thing, Souray would be a great PP QB, but let's be realistic, the Rangers are too close to the cap and need to sign a bunch of players. Lundqvist should be their number 1 priority.

  6. NjDEVSFN says:

the Devils are looking for MORE SIZE and, honestly, Souray's got it.

in all honesty, they need a hard point shot. Langenbrunner has it, but with Souray at least they can have a defenseman with a point shot.

as a flyers fan i would love to see souray got to any other team in the atlantic divison besides the rangers.

although id like to see him to go to the west instead.   but if he goes east to atlantic divison plz not to nyr

  8. wingerxxx says:

I'm really hoping that this isn't true.  The only signings I want the Rangers to announce are Lundqvist, Shanahan, Prucha. Avery, etc.

  9. wheresthesoda says:

Lundqvist wants more money since he saw the contracts Gomez and Drury got, he knows he is more valuable then them and he deserves mega bucks.

  10. wingerxxx says:

Hey, I don't blame him one bit.  He's arguably the most important player the team has right now, maybe even moreso than Jagr.  He deserves any penny that he can get.

It's just one more reason why I do not want to see this Souray thing happen, unless Sather has some kind of magic Lou Lameriello-ish antidote up his sleeve.  And even then, I don't believe that Souray would make the team that much better.

Prucha and Avery deserve nice raises as well.

  11. coach_bombay says:

    He waited too long….

Wherever he signs, the money/terms will be the similar to what Stuart signed for with LA….

  12. Habfanforever says:

ya you've been saying that for a while now but I think you're dead on. Souray is great for the powerplay but what do you need him for when you have that kind of offense?

  13. Radio says:

GoGo Rangers! Try to buy a cup again and expect different results.

  14. Nystyle says:

CBS Sportsline in NY said today that Souray may sign a 1-2 year deal with the Rangers (probably a one year deal at below market value) for a chance to "win now."

although the belief, according to them, is that he will be a Devil again by the end of this week.
