Could the Habs hire Francois Giguere as their next GM?

If the Montreal Canadiens do make a managerial change at some point, do not discount former Avalanche GM Francois Giguere. Giguere was a very serious candidate in 2000, when Andre Savard replaced Rejean Houle.

Can someone (looking at you habstar and LAFLEUR) please try and explain why they think McGuire would be a great, good, decent, or even marginally competent GM? His coaching record was awful, being replaced after less than one campaign -by the guy he replaced in the first place! Ohhh, he was a scout for Ottawa for 3 years. Yeah, he got Alfie in the 6th round, but that was likely a Euro scout. From 94-96 there are pretty much no notable NA players that he could have had any influence in picking. And what experience does he have, like a year as an assistant GM of the Whalers?

Please don't give me this "hockey knowledge" BS. He's an analyst, yeah, he can name pretty much every Jr player, where they played, and their hometown. Know what that's called? Production assistants and stats guys in his ear, and Google on his lap. I can't see a single reason beyond pure luck that he would be a decent GM.
Furthermore, NHL players seem to view him with contempt. They hate being interviewed with him and hated when he was between the benches for TSN. Even his former colleagues at TSN didn't seem to take him seriously much of the time. ***** this *****.
He even looks like a complete *****ing goof: http://wingnight.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/mcquire.jpg

So every year you don't win a cup is a rebuild year? Also, I'm no old timer, so maybe I'm ignorant of this, but I didn't realize Burke had been the GM for over 4 decades.

Thank you for enlightening me, I had no Idea that Ken Holland was a good GM, I though Detroit was a mess.
Without Price, your team would be *****ing Columbus. What is a small rebuild? Do you know what rebuild means? It means starting over, not getting one high draft pick that will save the franchise in one season. When the Pens were this bad they got Crosby and it still took a few years and two other #1 and #2 picks, a goalie with three names and a Russian currently owning the league before they turned it around.
You're *****ing delusional if you think one rookie will solve all the organizational problems.
About Burke, look at his trading record. Not spotless, but he acquired two of the top 5 scorers this season, as well as an all-star defenceman, some decent rookies, tons of picks, and several guys from college that he didn't even have to use a pick on (FAs). Oh let me guess: "but he lost two firsts for Kessel!" wah wah wah, go suck a dick and enjoy 5 years of an absolute crap team.

My god. Okay. You know what. EVERYTHING Scotty Bowman ever said was correct.

Now that we have that out of the way, we can get to the matter at hand. You don't know what a dictionary is!
A dictionary is a book where one looks up the definition of a word. Can you know see why Bob McKenzie would not call his colleague a walking dictionary in an attempt to sell him to the fans/press?
  4. HABSSTAR says:

Oh I don't.  I'm just saying that I'd be willing to accept him at this point if it means getting rid of Gauthier.

I also don't understand the correlation between knowing Jr players' name being a great GM.

I think there's a good reason why he's been on TV for the last decade and not in a hockey office somewhere.  Apparently Scotty Bowman thinks he'd do good.  I've never heard him say it personally.  Maybe the Habs still owe Scotty some money?

What about Gord Miller killing Price's shutout?  Bab***** after the game was great! "I'm not going to look at the film, I'm going drinking!" lol

  5. reinjosh says:

That's actually pretty damn impressive. Of the top ten scorers in the NHL right now, only 3 of them weren't drafted by the team they are currently playing on. And two of them were acquired through trade by Burke. Hell in the top 20 only Hartnell, Neal, Kessel, Lupul, Selanne and Hossa weren't drafted by the teams they are on. Having two in the top twenty, both acquired by trade in an impressive feat.

  6. reinjosh says:

Haha McKenzie made fun of Miller right afterwards for that comment on not being able to jinx Price's shutout. Funny stuff.

  7. reinjosh says:

I like the addition of Roy and Zajac lol. I enjoy seeing you try to bait me. It's fun.

But I'll bite anyways because I have nothing better to do with my time.
Derek Roy – Decent player. More talented than Grabo. Smaller though. And for whatever reason, Lindy Ruff has tried his absolute best to get rid of him. Sort of sets up red flags, no?
Zajac – Yay, he has more points in his career high than Grabo! He must be a better player! Oh that's right, he's been riding shotgun to Parise and still can't hit 70 points. Meh his defensive game is good and he's 6 foot 2 so he must be amazing.
And hey look, a non Leafs fan actually validates what I've been saying. Not a huge difference between Dubinsky and Grabo!
Nope, he must be an idiot too right?
  8. leafmeister says:

Wait. Your an adult? Well now I am baffled.

  9. JoelLeafs says:

Yeah, that was hysterical. The clip is on TSN.ca/nhl right now, if anyone hasn't seen it I highly recommend.

Two games in one week that he spoiled a shutout (Gus was the other)… what a jerk!

  10. JoelLeafs says:

Why would you accept him? This is what I don't understand.

Does anyone have a link to Bowman backing him? And is there anything beyond this recommendation to McGuire's credit?

    I'm going drinking, lol.

  11. HABSSTAR says:

Well at this point I have little faith the organization will pick anyone competent so if it's going to be a gong show then let's have at it and make it the best gong show ever.  I feel he could accomplish this. lol

  12. JoelLeafs says:

You seriously would be fine with McGuire at the helm of your organization? If that happened to the leafs I'd start following another team. This guy is a *****ing goof. I'm so glad NHL network picked him up, I was so sick of his BS on TSN, constantly interrupting the play-by-play for stupid comments and pointless facts. ***** Pierre.

We used to play a drinking the McGuire drinking game:

1 drink for saying something John-Maddenly redundant (now here's a guy that when he takes big strides, goes faster)

2 drinks anytime he interrupts the play-by-play or colour commentary announcers (Cole: and X passes to Y, winds up for a shot… McGuire: did you know that X played his highschool hockey in ____ town?)

3 drinks anytime he mentioned a player's junior team or home town (What a goal from X, a product of this town or that jr team)

I'd say I miss it, but really, we all *****ing hated that douch.

  13. JoelLeafs says:

He's french, it's a language barrier, no need to be a dick about it. Attack the content if you feel so strongly about it… Unless it's LN91, ***** that guy… 😉

  14. HABSSTAR says:

It's not so much being fine with it as I've resigned myself to the fact the next GM is probably going to be another twit.

  15. mapleleafsfan says:

Please show me where I said Burke is better than Holland. I said he's one of the top GM's, not the top, but one of them (Burke).. No ones arguing Holland is a fantastic GM. Jeez.

  16. mapleleafsfan says:

Ohh buddy, you're missing a whole lot of rules.

Actually such a fun game, I miss the big moron.
    Also his best interview:
The top rated comment sums him up perfectly, he's a penis with glasses.
  17. mapleleafsfan says:

Hahahah just watching pierre highlights kills me. One of the best is when Eberle ties the russia game with seconds left and Miller goes "CAN YOU BELIEVE IT", and f.cking pierre comes in with "I CAN!"

  18. mapleleafsfan says:

I know you would, you seem content with Gomez.

  19. JoelLeafs says:

    Easily Fisher.

  20. THENOTORIOUS says:

I didn't read all the posts but I also think that Pierre McGuire is an IDIOT, Hopefully the habs wont make the same mistake twice(Houle).

On a different note the habs start wining again since Gomez came back, I dont like Gomez but why is it that the habs win when is in the line-up??? Even though he doesn't produce, weird.

  21. JoelLeafs says:

I'd rather have Garth Snow at the helm than Pierre McGuire.

  22. Steven_Leafs says:

Don't bother, lafleur is an idiot. He hears what he wants to and wont change his opinion even if it is flat out wrong. Have we forgotten about the Habs' "generational talent"?

  23. lafleur10 says:

in montreal they won't put up with a full rebuild like edmonton ,pittsburgh etc is doing that it won't ever thappen there and they are further along than  you think the habs are alot closer than you think they have price is net already and he's better than 3/4's of the goalies in the league now! they have stuff on defence they have stuff up fron the pieces are therwe yeah they need some work but they'll be o.k. and this little blip out of the playoffs will be short ! i think if not next year the year after they'll be back  and i'll go as far as to say they'll be better than the leafs will be because of the pieces in place already namely price! burke's trade record is o.k. he got raped in the kessel deal no matter leaf fans say he did seguin is already turning the corner into a very good player and #1 center and dougie hamilton will be a top 2 defenceman! and seguin has a cup already he's won more the 1 ball phil has and has played less

  24. JoelLeafs says:

    1) Just because the fans won't tolerate it does not mean it isn't necessary.

    2) Burke's trade record is way better than "o.k." it's far better than that of most GMs, if not all (if you go back to his last two teams as well). He turned spare parts into Phaneuf, Aulie, Lupul and picks (Beauchemin was the only decent player to go).

    3) MTL has tons of money held up in shit players. Yeah, they have some pieces, but those pieces will need raises, and they could lose some since they have like 20 mil tied up in mediocre players for like 4 years.

    4) The leafs are the youngest team in the league and are showing improvement at all positions. They have a surplus of D-man and goalies especially. They will only get better, steadily. Hockeyfutures rates Toronto at 7th overall for prospects, MTL sits at 24th, so where are these pieces going to come from to fill the gaping holes in the roster? Oh yeah, that's right they will get a single top 5 pick this year and all their problems will be solved!!

    5) He got raped in the Kessel deal? Offensive comparisons aside, you have to be *****ing kidding me. He got a top 5 scorer in the league who is in his early 20's and signed long term. Are you *****ing retarded? Seriously, I'd feel bad tearing apart the arguments of a kid with downs syndrome, and you're sure making a case for that fact.

    6) What if price with goes down long term with injury, doesn't resign with this retarded organization, or stops playing at an elite level? MTL would be *****ED!!

Your arguments are insanely flawed. You and your type deserve an idiot like McGuire at the helm. At least then you'd have someone of similar intellect to deal with.

You're a *****ing idiot, think before you type.

Enjoy being out of the playoffs for the next 5 years, douch-bag.

(please, try to refute any of my points, just *****ing try it you dullard)

  25. LeafsNation4Ever says:

All the other hab players have to take shit for losing when he's not in the line up cause there's no one else to blame, so they have moar pressure.

When he's in the line up he's the only one to blame for losses, it's full proof.
  26. LeafsNation4Ever says:

    LOL

Generational talent is sticking on HTR forever now.
  27. leafmeister says:

Is it? That is what I would assume, but I thought he said somewhere that English was his first language. Either way, a cheap laugh it may be, but I enjoy most things (everything) about Lafleur's post. Both the content and the form.

  28. JoelLeafs says:

    Yeah, that's what I thought.

  29. JoelLeafs says:

Yeah, why trash the syntax when the content is so damn comical?
