Could the Kings move Brown + more

Paul Gaustad handled one question with care last week when he was asked by a Nashville television reporter if he planned to re-sign with Buffalo: “I’m not even thinking about that right now. This is my team now. I’m happy to be here.”

* The Kings fielded several offers for winger Dustin Brown before deciding to keep him for the stretch run. Brown, on pace for his fifth straight 20-goal season, likely will be traded before next season. He has a $3.175 million cap hit and two full seasons remaining on his deal.

* Backup goalie Michal Neuvirth, frustrated at times this year while sitting behind Tomas Vokoun, helped the Caps regain their footing with three straight victories. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” said Neuvirth, who had a 1.83 GAA and .939 save percentage during the three-game stretch leading into the weekend.

Double post! This is going to ruin the future of the franchise. How will we resign Kessel and Lupul with double posts as catastrophic as this?

  2. dumbassdoorman says:

Joel, how do you really feel man?

  3. JoelLeafs says:

Bored and procrastination-y. Maybe a little hungry.

  4. dumbassdoorman says:

well then I think you should have a few drinks while you decide what and if you wanna eat

  5. KingCanada says:

Yea I agree!  Nice collection of stats too thats pretty informative (saving me time too lol).

I think the contract a lil rich and would of prefered a number like Ruutu's but million overpaid?  Who cares…Not the end of the world.  Leafs are short on centers and wouldnt replace him in the UFA field this year.

If Kulemin was playing properly this year then Grabo would of had at least a dozen more points if not more.  So with that said, its a good signing if you ask me!

  6. KingCanada says:

At least he didnt get a NMC lol.  And I feel if Kulemin was playing up to par then Grabo's contract would of been justified anyways so wtv its a wash..

  7. TimTheBone says:

I just don't want to hear anything about plekanec and MTL's contracts anymore if people are going to accept this as fine….

sure the gomez albatross is bad but thats different….. Gionta Plekanec and even Kaberle are not bad contracts….

btw im speaking in a generalization not directly at you Josh

Library has no liquor license and I defend a project in the early AM tomorrow…

Enough personal nonsense, though. Hockey hockey hockey.

Also, everyone go see 'The Goon', it's pretty damn funny. Maybe not worth movie theater prices, but best hockey movie in a while ( On that note, why don't they serve beer at movie theaters yet? What decade is this?

  9. LeafsFTW17 says:

I don't like this signing for a few reasons, but I also like it for a few reasons.

I'll go with the negatives first..

    1.  I don't like the term.

I think that the way Grabo plays, the amount of times he get's absolutely destroyed by big hits, he won't be able to compete at the level he does now at 33.  If he was making 1.5m less, 5 years would've been fair.

    2.  I don't like the cap hit.

5.5m is a lot of money, he is making the most out of any forward. If the term was like 3 years I'd be happy with 5.5m, but not 5 years.

    3.  What do we do with Colborne and Kadri?

I was hoping that one of them could step up and take the 2nd line center position next year or the year after but with that spot locked up for 5 years, I don't see them fitting on our roster.  Neither of them can just jump up into the role of 1st line center and neither of them will be able to play well as a 3rd line center in the top 6 bottom 6 format that Carlyle has.

    Things I like.

    1.  He is a solid 2nd line center, won't put up flashy numbers but is the ideal 2nd line center.

    2.  Hopefully a consistant 50 point, 20 goal guy for the next 4 or 5 years.

    3.  Will help Frattin become a 20+ goal scorer if he's still playing on his line.

  10. LeafsFTW17 says:

But I love Grabo so I'm not too upset with this trade.

  11. hockey_lover says:

Oh I dont think its an issue of money. I truly believe that at some point, Malkin is going to want to be the big man on campus. He will NEVER be that in Pittsburgh. Not a chance.   To be "the go to guy," he will have to move on.

But again, this was just a random conversation. We were talking about how high prices were at the deadline. Someone said "imagine what a guy like Iginla would go for" .. then it just got silly from there.

  12. mapleleafsfan says:

But man, his contract isn't paid 5 mill a year… In 6-7 years when his play will be declining he only makes a couple mill. Easy to dump him on another team who needs the cap hit without spending the cash.

Also, 70 mill when the cap was implemented is not the same as 70 mill now. Inflation alone the cap will go up, probably not as rapidly but I definitely think it will.

  14. TheLeafNation91 says:

I don't think Kadri's ever going to play C in this league.

  15. TheLeafNation91 says:

    I'm fine with that…

But the money is WAY too much, that is the issue, and that is where you're snakebitten in this league.

  16. TheLeafNation91 says:

I don't think anyone has ever ripped on the Plekanec contract, I think we all mentioned it was very good deal for the Habs for a solid player. When we mentioned Plekanec in contract issues, more to do with the collection of them (Gomez, Kaberle, Gionta, Cammelleri (at the time), etc.)

However, the Kaberle contract is very bad…He is a horrible player now, but Montreal was depserate. And Gomez is welll…Gomez.

Gionta is a very good player, but he is slightly overpaid. Not to do with production, but he's a pretty small guy.

  17. blaze says:

Silly argument, those players signed those contracts in previous years when market prices were lower. Put anyone of those guys in the market this season and see what they are offered.

Not to mention some of those contracts were tendered to RFAs where market rates are lower.

  18. TimTheBone says:

i've heard plenty about the Pleks contract… maybe not from here… but alot ppl think its horrib;e…

and i really cant see how you think the Kaberle contract is horrible…. i mean its only a 4.2 or something cap hit… 4.4 maybe?… not sure exactly but its not bad at all… kaberle is not horrible… komisarek is horrible…. not trying to pick on a leaf player he just happens to be a former hab… simlilar contract and is way less useful… im glad he walked…. the only terrible thing about the kabs situation is the fact that hes under conytract for another year where as the guy we traded for him is a ufa at seasons end,…. you can make a good argument in that sake but money wise it's very fair for what he brings…i have no problems whatsoever

  20. LeafsFTW17 says:

    Sorry, signing lol

  21. reinjosh says:

Again I don't think its way to much. Way to much is 3 plus million overpaid. Not 1 – 1.5 million dollars.

  22. NonLeafFansAreGay says:

they do at some cineplex's bro

they have a nice, chill pub, it's pretty sweet
  23. hockey_lover says:

Honestly? Maybe its my little fantasy world but I think Sid will resign for the same price .. $8.7mil. His number thing .. he is really superstitious apparently. Besides, he makes a crap ton of money from a bazillion endorsements. His NHL salary, down a potential $2mil a season, isnt gonna make that much of a difference.

Although, if you listen to the rumours, he is unhappy in Pittsburgh and wants to play in Montreal (at the behest of his father), so who knows.

  24. hockey_lover says:

Thats my opinion as well. Unless Staal takes a huge paycut to stay in Pittsburgh, I cant see him staying. Or, unless the cap goes up by like $3mil in each of the next two years πŸ˜›  Then its a possibility.

But you're right .. the core is: Sid, Geno, Letang, Fleury. Rinse, lather, repeat.

Dont get me wrong, I loves me some Staal (except for his skating .. I still say he is like a drunken Bambi out there) but otherwise, dude rocks. But he is likely to get $5.5mil on the open market. Thats gonna be tough to swallow. Although, they could probably resign him now while Letang makes almost nothing. Once Letang comes up for resigning, trade Staal at that point.

  25. thisgamewelose says:

Reports say a Modified NMC clause.

  26. Steven_Leafs says:

I believe your wrong there, While most to all of those picks would likely have to be conditional, that is definitely a good price for UFA Malkin. And I'm sure if Shero is set on trading Malkin at the trade deadline then he will probably demand more pieces than take on that many 1sts (unless those first are all in one season for some reason).

  27. Steven_Leafs says:

Assuming he doesn't want to leave Pittsburgh, I get the feeling he will sign a long term contract with the Pens. Something that will have a lower cap hit but big cash up front (which gives him security in case his injuries become more of an issue when he turns 30-35).

    Something like:

10-14 years deal (lets say 12 years for this example)

    year 1-3: $10M (30)
    year 4-6: $8M (54)
    year 7-9: $5M (69)
    year 10+: $3M (78)

    Cap hit: $6.5M

Crosby gets payed the cash he deserves, signs long term which guarantees him that he will continue to get payed just in case he is forced to retire due to injury, and Pittsburgh gets the cap hit they would need to keep this team together.

  28. dumbassdoorman says:

Looks like we will get to see Carter Ashton tonight. Jonas Siegel, tweeted that he was on the same flight to Pitt. I believe with the injuries suffered this counts as an emergency call up not the last after deadline call up. Wonder if he take Lupuls spot on the top line?

  29. Steven_Leafs says:

I know the cap hit is too big for Grabovski but why are people freaking out so much?

If Grabovski signed for $4.5M we would be talking about how we dominated that signing, that Grabovski took a pay cut to stay in Toronto.

If he signed for 5.0M per season, we would probably be divided whether or not we got a good deal, with the majority saying it is a fair contract, solid signing, much better than losing him to free agency.

So if 5M is a solid number then 5.5M is barely considered a bad signing. $0.5M extra cap will not kill us, while yes his contract will definitely be a point in future negotiations on other contracts like Lupul and Kessel but even if Grabo signed to 4.5M Lupul and Kessel will still end up making the same thing anyway (I'm sure their agents are good enough). So what did we really lose? $0.5M in cap space for the next 5 years. I'm sure we will live.

And remember, 5.5M is much much…. MUCH better than losing him for nothing to free agency. No GM will let their top 6 forward walk for 0.5M.

Also I would like to point out that comparing Grabovski's contract to other deals that were signed 2-5 years ago is just plain stupid. The cap was much lower then and the value of everyone was lower (basic economics). Even comparing Grabovski's contract to similar players who signed extensions last season isn't that accurate, look at what everyone is going for, they are making 0.5M-1.0M more per year than they should.

The only way this contract becomes bad is if Grabovski's production drops, which makes me want to say "duuurrrrr", that is true for everyone and no player will accept less money because there is a chance they will produce less than they have been doing.

  31. KingCanada says:

Sick!  I was debating on watching the game tonight…now I must!  lol

I dont even care to see the Leafs win anymore…really just root for the rookies to score, and to see if Kessel can make it to 40 goals.

  32. KingCanada says:

Well hes been the go-to guy this season haha and hes outscored Crosby before.  I just dont think itll be an issue.  Hopefully he is more of a Federov than a terms of being a team player.

The guy you all should be concerned about is Jordan Staal.  Obviously a lesser player but could still nab you a good 3 assets.

If only Burke could work out some sort of Staal FOR Schenn/Kulemin swap or something along those lines.

Itll never happen but one can wish…

  33. KingCanada says:

Ya Im seeing it right now, he can supply a 10 team list where he WILL NOT be traded to.  That still leaves 19 teams he can be moved to (not that Im planning on wanting him traded) so at least theres some flexibility.  Burke didnt get TOTALLY fleeced lol.

  34. hockey_lover says:

The only "problem" I see with that is Shero has come out and said that he isnt a fan of the long term, front loaded contracts. He'd seem awfully silly turning around and doing it.

Dont get me wrong … Im all for it. I think its a great idea. A $6.5mil cap hit for a guy like Malkin is .. the best deal EVER in sports lol

Id bring it down to 10 years myself. That brings him to 36 years old.  10 years / $65mil.

  35. hockey_lover says:

Thats true. He has been the go-to guy this year. But he is never talked about. Its all about Sid all the time. And fair enough. I just think that one day, Geno might be all "hey, I wanna be the talk of the town and not play second fiddle." I hope it doesnt happen cause I love having him on the team. But it MAY happen.

Im kinda worried about Staal as well. If he hits 30 goals, he'll get $5.5 – $6.5 on the open market for sure. There is NO way the Pens can sign him if he wants that.

Although, if the cap continues to go up and Sid and Geno both sign again at the exact same rates they are making now, Staal *could* potentially be signed and kept.

    But its all hiiiighly unlikely.

  36. KingCanada says:

Exactly!  However its a problem for next year…depends on what happens in the playoffs as well considering he might get more ice time if Crosby doesnt return.

  37. Steven_Leafs says:

yeah but personally if it was Crosby or Malkin then I don't think he would mind 'flip-flopping'.

  38. hockey_lover says:

lol I love the lip service garbage players give the media.

Im using this example only because Im watching the upcoming game on TSN tonight. This is in no way a shot as the Leafs in particular, just athletes in general.

Question from reporter: "How does Lupul being out change the game?"

Answer from player: "Well you cant replace a guy like Lupul."

REALLY?  You cant replace a 20g/45pt guy? REALLY?  Ok sure .. this year, he is having a career year but in general, he is a 20g guy. Yeah cause he is one in a million πŸ˜›  Its like a Pens player saying "well you cant replace a guy like Kunitz."  Really? You cant?

I know they cant say anything different. I get it. Its just hilarious lol

  39. hockey_lover says:

Huh very interesting move by the Bruins.  They signed Tucro to a 1 year contract for next season.

Does this precipitate a move next season for either Thomas or Rask?

  40. Steven_Leafs says:

he was only signed because Rask is out for like 3-6 weeks because of a groin injury (can't remember exactly how long). Turco cannot play in the playoffs due to him being signed after the trade deadline so he is only a stop gap while Rask is out.

  41. hockey_lover says:

Oh. I didnt realize that Rask was out.  My bad.

  42. hockey_lover says:

lol true. If youre gonna get called a hypocrite, thats the right situation to deserve it πŸ˜›

  43. LeafsFTW17 says:

They don't mean it that way, what they mean when they say that is basically there isn't another player available to them that can replace Lupul, which is true.

  44. dumbassdoorman says:

LOL, yes damn you for not knowing

  45. hockey_lover says:

    lol Shush you πŸ˜›

  46. LeafsNation4Ever says:

Well really dude I don't think players are really talking about numbers or anything when they say they can't replace em…
