Reminds me a little of the Rucchin signing last year. I like this signing, Cullen does a lot of things right, and he did well in the playoffs. I like Cullen over Arnott, since Cullen is the more versatile player. This also solidfies things at center somewhat.

I’m very happy with this. Although we have no marquee center, Nylander is slick enough and Cullen is coming in a couple things you can’t teach- speed and confidence.

I think this signing demonstrates how the Rangers have seemed to “drop the ball.” What I mean by that is that they have allowed players that would make great additions to their team to slip away, and while all these great players are disappearing all they see fit to do is sign a player that I don’t believe will add anything to their team that could not be obtained from the farm. It’s not like the Rangers have no cap space, they have about $22 million that could be spent, yet it seems that they have not allowed themselves to be competitive when it comes to signing the marquee players or even the players a tier below that. I think the Rangers are going to end up resigning Straka, Rucinsky, and Sykora and maybe a few extra parts– i.e. making no improvement, while the rest of the league has opened up their wallets to do so. The one thing I believe this team absolutely needed was one defenseman to really lead the defense, and now there are none available. Cullen is a “nice” player, but nothing to write home about; right now the Rangers have plenty of “nice” players and not enough impact players. So I have to know, what are the Rangers saving all that cap space for? Hypothetically, even if they sign Elias to a $8 million a year contract they would have $14 million left, plenty to have signed a good defensmen resign all RFA’s wanted back and bring back either Straka, Rucinsky, Sykora, or some combination of the three. I am very dissapointed and hope in the coming days the Rangers do something to help the team make real improvement from a talent standpoint.
