The Fourth Period –

Published reports indicate that San Jose Sharks veteran Vincent Damphousse will not be traded to the Colorado Avalanche, and likely will stay with the Sharks. The Avs and Sharks had reportedly agreed to a trade that would have seen Damphousse in Denver. The problem arose when the Avs wanted Damphousse to restructure his contract, which has a player option for next year at $4 million. Apparently Colorado wanted Damphousse to reduce the salary to around $3 million for next year but the player refused.

“I think there is a very good chance Vinny will stay in San Jose,” Bob Sauve, Damphousse’s agent told the Denver Post. The Avalanche are still looking for that third line centerman and with Chris Gratton gone to Phoenix, Colorado GM Pierre Lacroix is focused on Bryan Smolinski of L.A., and Craig Conroy of Calgary. TFP’s sources continue to believe that the impending unrestricted free agent Smolinski will be an Av by 3:00.

The Post speculates that players that could go the other way in any Colorado deals are Dean McAmmond, Eric Messier, Jeff Shantz, Dan Hinote, Radim Vrbata, and Vaclav Nedorost.

Anyway, smolinski will be a better fit on the 3rd line than sir “head and Shoulders” “Damn”phousse. I still think they need more than that; a winger to play with sakic. I simply hope they keep Vrbata. They might use Skoula to land a first-class winger (satan, selanne, sanderson, straka…)

That’s too bad because I thought Damphousse would be an awesome 3rd center. I agree Smolinski would look good though.

Man Colorado is looking good if they can pull of a third center trade.

They have the best defense in hockey now. Plus Vrbata, Sakic, Forsberg, Tanguay, Roy WOW

I think the cup is theirs if they get a third center.

I said that the Morris for Drury trade was brilliant – no one agreed – but this is why. At trade deadline day it is far easier to land a third center than it is to land a D man like Morris. Colorado got a steal!

With Vrbata and Tanguay you don’t need Sakic to play wing anymore.

Colorado against Ottawa is still my pick unless Toronto or Jersey pull off something major today.

    Regardless, Colorado wins the Cup

I see the Avs landing a 3rd line center today but they really need a right wing to play with Sakic and Reinprect. Vrbada will be a good player in years to come but for this playoff push he hasn’t developed into what they need. 3rd line scoring is gonna be the Avs only question because we all know how well Detroit’s 3rd line does against the avs 3rd, and Dallas is just as deep as Detroit. Damphousse would be nice but Ricci would be more realistic.

If I were Gm I’d try for Drury and Conroy. Drury is solid in the playoffs and the Flames seem to be trying to give him away. Conroy would fill that 3rd line center spot. The only way I see that hapening is the avs giving up Nederost, Aubin, possiably Vrbada with drafts (either and or) cash.

I see the lines like this.

    Hejduk Forsberg Tanguay

    Drury Sakic Reinprect

    Keane Conroy Mcaamond

    Messier Hinote Parker
