The Fourth Period –

Published reports indicate that San Jose Sharks veteran Vincent Damphousse will not be traded to the Colorado Avalanche, and likely will stay with the Sharks. The Avs and Sharks had reportedly agreed to a trade that would have seen Damphousse in Denver. The problem arose when the Avs wanted Damphousse to restructure his contract, which has a player option for next year at $4 million. Apparently Colorado wanted Damphousse to reduce the salary to around $3 million for next year but the player refused.

“I think there is a very good chance Vinny will stay in San Jose,” Bob Sauve, Damphousse’s agent told the Denver Post. The Avalanche are still looking for that third line centerman and with Chris Gratton gone to Phoenix, Colorado GM Pierre Lacroix is focused on Bryan Smolinski of L.A., and Craig Conroy of Calgary. TFP’s sources continue to believe that the impending unrestricted free agent Smolinski will be an Av by 3:00.

The Post speculates that players that could go the other way in any Colorado deals are Dean McAmmond, Eric Messier, Jeff Shantz, Dan Hinote, Radim Vrbata, and Vaclav Nedorost.
