Datsyuk, Zetterberg to stay put???

Thefourthperiod.com is reporting that GM Ken Holland, of the Detroit Red Wings, is trying to re-sign Datsyuk and Zetterberg, two players which played a great role in the 03-04 season. But the problem with this is that Datsyuk is reportedly asking big bucks from the Wings. Datsyuk is asking $4 million US while Zetterberg is asking $2.5 million US. Reports have said that if Detroit can’t pay up for Datsyuk then he may just stay in Russia…

After signing defensemen Mathieu Schneider and Chris Chelios, the paper claims the Wings have about $10 million left to sign Datsyuk, Zetterberg, defenseman Niklas Kronwall, a goaltender, another defenseman and a few third and fourth liners.

More news for the Buds however, the leafs seemed to be very interested in the young Zetterberg as well.

I don’t understand why the Wings signed Shannahan, Yzerman, Chelios and Schneider ahead of their two most promising long term forwards.

  2. Aetherial says:

For the same reasons the Leafs have an aging overpriceed goalie chewing up cap space, they let the heart of the team go after some bush-league negotiating, then they qualify all their 4th liners that would be hard pressed to evan find a job anywhere else…

Fans with the least reason to hope:

  3. Aetherial says:

Surprised Zetterberg is not asking for more.

  4. -Swizz- says:

in my dream world..i would package belfour w/ someone for zetterberg

    and then trade for thibault..

too bad wont happen…will have to wait another year just for “hope” of a contending team

People (including thefourthperiod.com) keep saying that these Zetterberg rumors are out of Toronto, but far from it, a Swedish newspaper reported it, and MoJo mentioned that it was reported.

By the way, with $8.75 million left in salary with 6 spots left…..Allison’s deal is league minimum, and Lindros will likely be a million, so that takes us to $7.3 million for 4 players. and you know, Kariya and/or Selanne and/or Palffy (Just some names that I think we could use) seem affordable, especially if we can fill those other holes with cheaper players, like maybe Mikael Samuellson, who we were rumored to get last summer.

*Kariya can be interchanged with Palffy or Selanne.

I wouldn’t mind that roster at all. It’s not QUITE as good as our old roster, but all teams will be close to as good as eachother.

With that roster… we have a CHANCE at division title, but either way, we’ll beat the Sens, and the Habs, and get our asses kicked by Philly.

  6. Resmo112 says:

they signed them first cause they were easier and cheaper. it’s really simple, you call me stupid.

  7. Resmo112 says:

it’s better you don’t have the waste of space mogilny in there

  8. p0k3 says:

Because they need to build a solid team and not blow all there money in one place. Theres a limit on what they will spend on players. You can bet that the kind of money Ken Holland is willing to spend on Datz and Z has already been worked into their payroll/roster.

  9. 92-93 says:

agree with Resmo112’s response to McLeaf: Mogilny is still a skilled forward but he is too risky (Considering that we are supposed to be getting Allison and – dry heaves – Lindros as well).

I also don’t agree with the figures and the line-up you produce in this plan but it’s just a plan, I know, and it’s more than what JFJ has right now.

The Leafs cannot afford Kariya, cannot afford Palffy, and if they want to get Lindros I will vomit with rage (I’ve done it before, it’s very cathartic). As unrealistic as the rumour may be, I’d rather them try to go after a guy like Zetterberg or a guy like Anson Carter than these star players. Let Philly have them.

Finally, the Leafs need another solid D-guy and a back-up goalie. In fact, I would say that these are the two most important acquistions they need right now. Tellqvist WILL play 30-40 games this year with Belfour’s back the way it is. Bring in the UFA Schwab from Jersey. And our “defence” sucks right now. Bring in a Woolley (damn we couldn’t get Rathje or McGillis) so that will push Berg to a 7th D-guy or Pilar or whoever is struggling.

  10. 19Yzerman says:

we get to keep our players that everyone passed on during drafts in 1998 171st 6th rounder Datsyuk and 1999 210th 7th rounder Zetterberg. Kenny isn’t going pull the trigger on a deal unless the barrel is pointing at the other guy when he does.

Now that the Bulin wall is off the Market look for a Wings goalie movement soon. Real Soon.

  11. habsoverserver says:

I think the Habs could beat that roster.

  12. 19Yzerman says:

May the LEAFS sweep the season series from the Flyers and out score them by 2 goals per game.

Hey if Leafy can put those line ups he has on here I figure I can add to the fun of fantasy.

  13. PensFansRejoice says:

i love how u guys pencil these people into your lineups that quickly… especially with interchangable parts.

  14. 19Yzerman says:

Yea Leafy has a deck of trading cards and he is playing with what looks good on his desk like a game of solitare. Then he types into a post what he sees in front of him. Its kind of like when I was a kid and got into my older brothers playboy mags. Oh to be young again.

  15. habsoverserver says:

Are the Wings a solid team with Shanahan and Yzerman or with Zetterberg and Datsyuk?

$5 million for a top young scorer is pretty much the going rate. Either you make room for it or you get someone of lesser quality.
