Dempsey, 29, had played in 58 games for the Blackhawks this season and recorded 25 points (8-17=25) and 30 penalty minutes, a career-high. Dempsey was leading all Blackhawks in average ice time (23:47 per game) and he also led all Blackhawks blueliners in shots with 155. In addition, he was second among all Chicago defensemen in goals, assists, points and games played, as well as power play goals (two).

“Nathan fits in well with our current group of defensemen,” said Taylor. “He is mobile and he moves the puck well. He has a good, all-around game, and we like that he has played in all situations with Chicago this season.”

Last season with Chicago, Dempsey’s first full NHL campaign, he set career highs in goals (five), assists (23), points (28), penalty minutes (26) and games played (67).

Interesting move by the Kings, Dempsey is a pretty solid defenceman

well not the usual dave taylor splash of a trade, but a good one. everybody here in l.a. has been crying for some blue line help. gleason, zizka, corvo will be good in a couple of years but right now they have been making bone head plays in their zone on a nightly basis costing us some games. dempsey is a good pick up for them – a smart guy in his zone and logs some good ice time. problem – he is small and we need somebody to clear the front of the net. he’s a good addition especially if we get miller and vishnovsky back for playoffs and some of these guys back to the ahl. on a bigger note choke-manek’s groin (thank god it wasn’t the unibrow) is a huge concern right now. taylor said there is no timetable set for his return and it has been almost 2 weeks since the injury. as if their goalie situation wasn’t shakey with him in net, it’s even scarier without him. huet has been solid so far, but playoffs? their current back up has played all of 15 min. of nhl hockey. does dave make another move for a netminder? good first move dave, but we need more.

Great trade. Solid offensive defenseman who doesn’t make a whole lot for less than a bag of pucks. Any playoff contenders looking for blueline help should be kicking themselves for not getting Dempsey at that price.

great trade for the kings. getting a solid d-man that can play both the offensive and defensive side of the puck and gave up nothing at all in return. the kings D has been looking absolutely horrible as of late especially modry and corvo. both make more mistakes in one game then some d-men make in a year. and when a rookie(grebeshkov) comes in for his first nhl game and plays i think it was 17 to 18 minutes and does not make a single mistake and plays with such poise u would think he was a 10 year veteran. if jim fox was not on his nutz all night saying that it was his first nhl game. then u know something is wrong when a first game rookie is making less mistakes then a 11 year nhl veteran. omg has it really been 11 years that he has been in the nhl it sickins me that he can be called a veteran.

Good acquisition by LA. The Kings do need a replacement for Visnovsky(out indefinitely) on the PP to playing with Modry.

Los Angeles won’t last long in the playoffs (if they’re able to make it) nonetheless. But being there would be a great accomplishment with all the misfortunes who has surrounded this team all season long.

    Stupid trade by the Hawks.

Only a 4th pick for what could’ve been an important part of their defensive core for years to come.

    Good move by L.A.

Interesting: I didn’t know that eight minus seventeen equalled 25.

    it doesn’t

This trade doesn’t really make much sense. From what I heard, Chicago wanted to build their D around this guy and then they dump him off for really nothing. Good trade for the Kings at least.

  10. ak2797 says:

There is a reason the Maple Leafs let him go….he is just not very good. The Hawks never said they were going to “build” around him; they have much better prospects (and younger) in the AHL/Juniors. I mean jeez, how can you say any of the Hawks defensemen are any good when you look at how many shots and goals they give up? A 4th round pick for a guy who plays too small and doesn’t score enough to justify keeping him here when the Hawks have Berard seems fine to me.

  11. Aetherial says:

OK Dempey is not the second coming.

With the premium so high on decent defenseman though, what were the Hawks thinking here?

Their organization has become more of a joke than even Pittsburgh or Washington.

  12. bpanther83 says:

hold up here….sry I mostly agree…but they are not even close to as much of a joke as Pittsburgh

  13. distance7 says:

Don’t give the ‘Hawks that much credit. They make Pittsburgh look like a beautifully run franchise. The Pens just don’t have any money, while the ‘Hawks won’t spend any, no way no how. Chicago is a great city for hockey, and Wirtz just seems to ignore it.
