Desjardins back out of retiremeent and Esche being punted?

Quietly, Holmgren investigated the availability of former captain Eric Desjardins, who retired after last season. While Holmgren floated the idea of Desjardins as returning as an assistant coach with the Phantoms, the conversation turned, too, to the veteran defenseman’s injured hip. “When I talked to him the other day about coaching,” Holmgren said, “I got the impression that he still was not 100 percent.” But should Desjardins be healthy and the Flyers be within range of the playoffs in, say, February ..why not?

It’s also time to punt Robert Esche, with his 1-3 record and 5.32 goals-against average. Say rumors, Vesa Toskala may be available from San Jose. And if none of that helps, why not shop Forsberg? Why not try to secure two or more helpful major-league players for an injury-plagued star in the final year of his contract?
