Devils are forced to shed salary

The New Jersey Devils are in a tight spot financially. With Gomez getting $5M at arbitration the Devils are already over the $44M salary cap and still have to re-sign Brian Gionta, Paul Martin and David Hale.

In order to shed some salary to make cap space they will have to either trade or release players. One of those players with a big salary is Scott Gomez. The Devils have 48 hours to accept or release Gomez. It is believed that they will accept his $5M a year salary and then trade him. The teams reportly interested in Gomez are Atlanta, Florida, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver, Ottawa, Phoenix, Washington, Colorado and Los Angeles. If the Devils decide to make room in other ways rather than trading Gomez they could trade such veterans as Sergei Brylin, Richard Matvichuk, Brad Lukowich or Jason Wiemer. Whatever the Devils do we know for sure that the Devils will have some big decisions to make in the coming weeks.

If Lou does have to part with Gomez I’m sure he would like him as far away from the Eastern Conference as possible. Vancouver doesn’t need any more salary. L.A. and Colorado are interesting choices but the team that could really use his services is Calgary. They have very little time left to make a run for the Cup with 2 years left on the contracts of Iginla, Kiprusoff, Regehr and Phaneuf. They have a lot of good prospects to offer and could put a package together.

I don’t see that happening only because I don’t see Calgary macking that kind of a splash this early. If they do anything big, i think it would be more towards the trade deadline. I dont see Colorado going for him, MAYBE L.A. could get him to play with Robatille to take one last shot at the playoffs before he retires. Although they would have to part with someone like Frolov, and i dont see that happening.

    They’re the new Leafs.

I believe Morrison is set to make 3.20 mil next year so that would only free up 1.8mil. That isn’t going to get it done on the Devils side.

Thats why I said unless there was more involved. Maybe a 3rd team that wan’t Morrison.

    VAN – Gomez

    LA – Morrison

NJ – Frolov + 3rd rounder (from Vancouver)

Calgary has something better and thats tanguay. they wouldnt go for him.

I can’t disagree with your logic. Sutter likely will see what kind of team he has for a few months before doing anything that big. Unless it’s a steal of a deal.

ok. so after these comments i have revised this trade:

    MTL: Gomez, Davison

    SJ: Rafalski, Ribiero

NJ: Fahey, Stevenson, 4 Draft Pics( 2 from SJ, 1 from MTL, 1 from LA)

    LA: Ryder or Bonk

this makes it a little more realistic for the teams involved.

MTL gets a very Good big center and a young physical dman

SJ gets the #1 dman that they have been looking for and a good forward

NJ releaves cap space and gets some pics and a couple of young players.

LA gets a forward that they can use to fill the hole pavol demitra left.

they call brylin the most underrated/underapreciated player in the nhl.

he probablywould go for just a 2nd/3rd round pick though, which is shameful.
