DiPietro Signs [15 YEAR] contract with Isles!!!!

The New York Islanders will announce today that they have signed goalie Rick DiPietro to a 15-year, $67.5 million contract.

The deal is believed to be the longest in NHL history and second only in major North American pro sports to the $25-million, 25-year deal Magic Johnson signed with the NBA Lakers in 1981.

What a surprise. The Islanders once again prove they are one of the worst managed franchises, not just in hockey, but professional sports. No wonder Neil Smith was fired, he probably couldn’t stop laughing when this deal was proposed. It appears that Garth Snow is Mike Milbury’s Mini-Me.

  2. dewdrop11 says:

I know this is a joke right?

15 year deal for a goalie that is subpar at best?

Obvioulsy the Isles management has their head up their ass. a lot can happen to a franchise in 15 yeaears. why lock yourself down?

    LETS GO RANGERS

  3. broc says:

    Ridiculous!!

The circus continues in NY as evidenced by a *****eyed move like this. DiPietro is good and probably has a DECENT future.. but a 15 year contract for a guy who still has something to prove?

That basically makes him UNTRADEABLE… EVER. Miller/Luongo/Kiprusoff he is NOT. What if, in 3-4 years they figure maybe he’s not quite the goalie we anticipated? No one in their right mind will ever trade for that contract now. This is on par with the Yashin signing IMO.

Seriously. I could run the Isles better. My grandma could run the Isles better. And shes dead.

  4. beckfan05 says:

I heard that DiPietro negotiated this deal with himself to himself with Wang and Snow watching to get him ready to step in in 16 years as the new G.M.

  5. kamullia says:

I thought Garth Snow must have been reading “The perfect guide to be an NHL GM by Mike Milbury” when I first saw this article. But after reading the TSN story, apparently this was all Charles Wang’s doing. This is from the TSN.ca story:

Islanders’ owner Charles Wang, who was directly involved in the negotiations, had indicated that if DiPietro didn’t sign by Friday, when the team opens training camp in Nova Scotia, that DiPietro would not play in the 2006-07 season.

I can not help but feel sorry for all Islanders fans. I feel sorry for all the mocking they have been and will have to endure. I almost believe that no hockey fan should have to endure that, but unfortunately there are some few exceptions that do, but the Isles fans as a whole certainly do not deserve it.

Of course, this might be the opportunity for the other franchises to keep taking advantage of the Islanders in trades, since it looks like we are back to the days of Milbury here. I bet GMs are dusting off their shopping list while they say on the phone “Garth! Buddy! How’s things?!…”

Not that I think this would happen at this stage, but I wonder, if things continue to get worse in Long Island, can the rest of the owners and the NHL step in and buy out Wang? It would only be fair to the fans.

  6. habswinthecup-again says:

What a joke the Islanders are, definately the worst deal signed by an NHL in a long time. Dipietro is now signed until he is 41 years old, boy I bet he will be just great at that age. TSN also reports that the deal is fully guarenteed if Dipietro suffers a career ending injury at anytime of the 15 year contract, smart move by Dipietro.

  7. CrosbyMalkin66 says:

Wow, is this contract a joke or what…. This is basically why the Islanders are terrible, becuase it starts all the way up at the top of management. BULLSHIT

  8. habswinthecup-again says:

I was thinking the same thing about the NHL buying out Wang, I mean the NHL would only be looking out for itself and the betterment of the League. One more thing I just thought of, has this deal been approved by the League yet? Every transaction has to get approval, hopefully the NHL will step in and veto this deal.

  9. kamullia says:

I do not have a problem with a player being paid the contract in full if he is lost to permanent injury. I believe there is nothing wrong with that and it is only fair. What makes this a bone-headed move is the length of the contract. Not even the money (which in fact, at later stages he could be a bargain if salaries keep escalating). It is just the length that is completely asinine.

For anyone to assume they can predict production, even on a 10 year window, is absolutely ridiculous, let alone 15 years worth of player production. This will turn out as the worst deal in history, or the worst deal in history. I doubt there is room for anything in between.

  10. 2buxaslice says:

They’ll never win a cup. Not in the next 15 years anyway. Dipietro has no incentive to play. He’s going to get that money no matter what happens. Plus if he gets hurt the Islander’s still have to pay out the rest of the contract.

Man Jeremy Jacobs looks like a genious next to Wang.

    Way to fail.

  11. Habroller says:

I like your end of comment’s lapsus. Don’t know if it was intentional, but either way it was great.

    Btw, great posts in general…

  12. OldGoalie says:

I’ve been sitting here for 5 minutes trying to figure out what to type…I am literally dumbfounded by this. If ANY franchise should know how stupid ultra long term contracts are in the NHL, it would be the Isles…and they turn around and sign DiPietro to an even longer deal than Yashin’s?

He turns 25 on September 19…and the Isles are stuck with the guy until he’s 40. At an average of $4.5 million per year.

I wonder if Roberto Luongo is mad that he didn’t get to stick around with a team that’s this stupid about throwing money around, or if he’s happy that he got out of the train wreck that this franchise appears to be…?

  13. hockeyhead says:

    what a bunch of boobs.

    good luck trading him…..possibly toronto.

  14. 92-93 says:

    1) yeah this is an absurd deal and it contributes to the perception of the Isles as a dysfunctional organization

    2) the Isles WILL be battling for a playoff spot (but i think they’ll just miss the playoffs). the have some good young players, a solid defence core and a good young goalie.

    3) its a little obnoxious to make a post that actually changes the look of the thread (re: Sands’ needlessly long ‘HAAA’ comment).

  15. Turnbull says:

Wow,………what a f***ing joke!!! Whats wrong with these guys!?? Are you kidding me,…a 15 year, $60 million dollar deal for Dipietro?? All the other GM’s around the league must have pissed their pants immediately upon hearing about this deal. The NHL needs to step in and do something about the Islanders’ ownership,….how can this team ever succeed if its going to be run like this. Absolutely ridiculous!!!!

  16. Sands says:

whamp whamp… too bad budddyyy this NHL news deserves it

  17. habswinthecup-again says:

I do not have a problem either with a player getting paid if his career is cut short, I was only stating a fact and imagining how pissed off Wang would be if Dipietro suffers a career ender in a year or two.

  18. NjDEVSFN says:

time for all you to apologize to me

the Devils only signed Elias for 7 years

  19. wingerxxx says:

Oh for the love of God. At least it’s not an extension to Yashin’s contract.

  20. 92-93 says:

    whamp whamp?

    buddy?

    whatever

    chuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuumpp.

  21. beckfan05 says:

They vetoed it last year when Milbury tried it then.

  22. beckfan05 says:

    Thats probably next……….

  23. 24_cups_and_counting says:

It’s a toss up for worst deal of the offseason between Kubina @ 4/20 or Dipietro @ 15/67.5. Dipietro wins by the slimmest of margins.

  24. beckfan05 says:

Just to reassure Billy Smith his place in Islander history, they signed him to a 6 year deal today.

  25. hockeyhead says:

i heard they are retiring eric fichauds number as well.

  26. habskovalev27 says:

I guess they forgot the Yashin contract error…

  27. 19AVSFANFoLIFE19 says:

………. elias can play like he is worth the money if he is not injured. Dipietro to be honest will probably suck for the rest of the career. hes getting 4 million to do it so.

  28. 92-93 says:

cant do a post without mentioning the leafs eh?

    obsessed.

  29. FlamingHomer says:

Wow. The Isles’ GM must really like goalies.

  30. 24_cups_and_counting says:

Easy target. Take the shot when u get it.

  31. 92-93 says:

    haha.

yes, i guess you are an easy target aren’t you? i guess i should stop picking on you.

  32. mojo19 says:

Yeah, they better hope he has a strong love of the game and an edge to want to win, because you’re totally right, he has no financial pressure AT ALL.

  33. gg_idiot says:

Uh….the dipietro deal is more than just a slim bit worse.

  34. gg_idiot says:

Wangs World Wangs World PARTY TIME EXCELLENT

Wang really ripped DiPietro on this deal eh? Holy criznap I says, if I were DiPietro I would fire my agent right now…….so in 15 YEARS I WILL BE ABLE TO NEGOTIATE A BETTER CONTRACT.

You guys are all really being negative towards Wang and Super-GM Garth Snow. Perhaps it is as you say, the Islanders management is absolutely terrible. Or maybe there is a second solution? Maybe DiPietro is a super intelligent mastermind and he instrumented this entire deal himself? Jedi mind tricks?

  35. gg_idiot says:

Maybe this is the reason Neil Smith got fired? He didn’t want to start signing everyone to 15 year contracts. So Wang was like BEYOTCH get outta ma howse!

  36. crozky says:

When I heard this news I couldn’t believe it. I send my sympathies to the fans of this once great franchise. In memory of this event I would like to introduce a new phrase in the hockey lexicon:

To pull a wang- To do something so stupid that no one can believe or to screw up a potential good thing

Thanks Mr Wang for your contribution to the hockey world.

  37. gg_idiot says:

The difference, the Elias deal was a good deal

  38. JannettyTheRocker says:

I see that you’re still out to cause trouble, hey 92-93??? Some things never change………(I’m totally kidding). Nice to see you’re still around. It’s been a long summer.

    Take Care.

    GO OILERS GO!!!!

  39. Sands says:

    hahah calm down tough guy

  40. my_sphincter says:

That is what happens when you make your third string goaltender the GM of the team.

  41. gg_idiot says:

    haha this guy!

  42. gg_idiot says:

uh… i guess you one this won

  43. my_sphincter says:

Elias – one of the best players in the game.

    DiPietro – Suuuuuuuuccckkkkks!

Maybe the Leafs will take his contract over when he’s matured a little (38 or 39 years old maybe)

  44. habs_win_cup_2007 says:

Hmmm…………….what do I say, are you sure this is real? Wow go isles go!!!!!!!!lolololololololol

Oh to be an isles fan today

  45. gg_idiot says:

that one was clever 2 or 3 seasons ago

  46. Lint07 says:

Don’t get me wrong, I like DiPietro just as much as the next guy and I think he is a very good goalie and will only get better…. But for the love of God!!

    15 years?

    Are you friggin’ kidding me?

…And I thought nobody in this organization could do worse than Milbury handling the Yashin contract… boy was I wrong!

The Isles got to be the biggest joke of the NHL this season.

  47. gg_idiot says:

    i believe it

  48. Isles78 says:

    Let’s go Islanders!

  49. habs_win_cup_2007 says:

Hmmm…………….what do I say, are you sure this is real? Wow go isles go!!!!!!!!lolololololololol

  50. habs_win_cup_2007 says:
