Don Cherry pleads his case: ‘Don’t try to ruin a good thing’

In the first Coach’s Corner since the hockey broadcasting landscape was forever changed earlier this week, Don Cherry pleaded his case to the Canadian public — and his potential future bosses.

“I know I’m good,” said the 79-year-old Saturday night. “I didn’t fall off a turnip truck. I know everybody watches.

“So all I’m saying is, take it easy. Don’t try to ruin a good thing. Just leave us alone, and we’ll be just as good next year.”

Cherry’s future on Hockey Night in Canada is hanging in the balance following the National Hockey League’s decision to sign an exclusive 12-year, $5.2-billion national TV rights contract with Rogers Communications. The deal, announced Tuesday, kicks in next season.
