Shean Donovan is going to have some anxious hours before Wednesday’s 3 p.m. NHL trade deadline.

A healthy scratch since Jan. 19, the Senators winger isn’t sure if he will be dealt before the deadline, but he didn’t seem surprised to learn Friday the club has contacted other teams to see if there’s any interest in him.

While it’s unlikely Donovan, who is set to be a UFA after this season, will be traded unless someone wants to add veteran depth for the playoff run, he has discussed the situation with his wife and would rather finish the season with the Senators.

“My first choice is to stay here and to play,” said Donovan, 34, following Friday’s skate at the Bell Sensplex. “You know how it works in this game, you never know. Situations can change, you can have injuries or other things can happen, and you’re right back in the lineup.

“I totally realize how lucky I am to be here, and I also know that we’ve got a good team here. You want to be ready to play. I know from being with other teams on different playoff runs that you need to have older guys around and ready to contribute. I’ve talked it over with my wife. I’m aware of the situation. I’d rather just be here.”

If the Senators deal Donovan, it will be because GM Bryan Murray wants to give the veteran a chance to get regular playing time.
