Draft Lottery to be held behind closed doors

According to Eklund, the draft lottery will take place behind closed doors at the Board of Governor’s meeting, with the results to be made public at the press conference for the league after the players ratify the new CBA.

This supports the rigging theory which would allow Crosby to join a big market team to gain more attention and hopefully more revenue for the league. Even though I don’t think the NHL lottery was ever held publicly or televised, this is interesting to think about. I think it would be a shame if he ended up on a low market team like Buffalo or Carolina.

Its a load of crap they way they are doing it. They are picking #30 first, and then saving #1 for last, which means it sucks to be the Rangers and 3 balls!

  2. wingsrock34 says:

    where did you hear that?

  3. RaGsHoCkEy88 says:

sorry but thats wrong….have u read the way its set up?? obviously u have considerring u know the rangers along with 3 other teams have 3 balls in. but the 1st picked out is the 1st overall pick. if #30 is picked 1st then they would have set it up that the 16 teams that have 1 ball in would have more of a chance of a higher pick….they made it an advantage for the “worse” (if u wanna call them that) teams to get a low pick

  4. TheCoach says:

No, that’s just how they are announcing the results.

The actual lottery will still be done in private, they’re just going to announce the results right after on TSN.

Otherwise, if you went with 1 to 30, a lot of people would tune out after the first pick. This way, it creates suspense.

  5. RaGsHoCkEy88 says:

very true….it would be a good thing for the NHL to go public with the results but they will do whatever. i hope crosby ends up a ranger….or even jack johnson or pouliot

  6. dave1979 says:

i heard earlier today on the TEAM 1040am radio here in Vancouver that TSN has picked up the draft results and will be showing them live, (i just checked out tsn.ca and this is true) and then as i got home from work, the same station reported that the lottery itself would be broadcast live. i sure hope so, but we will have to wait and see.

The results of the NHL’s entry draft lottery to determine who gets the No. 1 overall pick, will be carried exclusively on The Sports Network in a special half-hour show on Friday at 4 p.m. (EST). The big prize, of course, is talented youngster Sidney Crosby of the Rimouski Oceanic, whose scoring exploits have made him the clear No. 1 choice and a potential franchise player. Every team in the NHL has a shot at winning that first overall pick in a slightly weighted lottery.

the latter paragraph courtesey of tsn.ca

  7. ranger_fan says:

Right, they are getting the results live starting with #30. That is what I heard. Being behing closed doors, may be it was fixed, and there was no balls, but just the NHL fixing it.

  8. Leaf_Expert says:

They wanted it behind closed doors so they could fix it and MAKE Crosby a Leaf!!!

    There’s no stopping it!

  9. TheCoach says:

I am standng by the belief that if any team other than Ottawa gets him, it was fixed 😉

  10. ranger_fan says:

I think Ottawa will get lucky and pull out #30. It might just be me, but Id prefer #30 over 16-29 because your 2nd round pick will be #31 overall.

  11. jacosta says:

A long time ago in the NBA apparently the fix was in on the draft. The commissioner of the NBA wanted and needed PAtrick Ewing to play for the Knicks.

Well how it was done was that they did not use ping pong balls like we see on tv but rather envelopes. The rumour was that the Knicks envelope was placed in the freezer for a few hours before.

As a result, when the commissioner put his hand in the barrel, the coldest envelope belonged to the knicks.

This apparently is a rumour, but the knicks apparently had little chance of getting the number one pick and they got it.

Could this happen again. Well if New York gets the number one pick then let the rumours begin

  12. ranger_fan says:

What is NBA, and what is a knick?

Is Patrick Ewing famous or something, what did he do

  13. Scruffy05 says:

I… I have heard of this Ew-ing guy… Wasn’t he an old apache chief who made it big playing for his hometown Chicago Tarantulas, hence changing their team name for ever after when he retired to the Blackhawks in a terrible and glorious ovwersight in Native American history and distribution?

Anybody who thinks I am serious with this “May ye be struck down with Pavel Bure!”

  14. brewstar03 says:

Wait, if it will be show live on TV on TSN….

What channel is TSN?? I live in the U.S. Please say I will be able to watch it!!!

  15. Scruffy05 says:

Maybe if you have Satellite… TSN is based out of Toronto.

  16. Scruffy05 says:

If the Lottery is in fact fixed, this will be the outcome (or close to it:

1st Pick: New York Rangers: Sidney Crosby

No doubts here, New York is the best place for the league if they are going to boost there image. Let’s hope he doesn’t turn into another Lindros, Bure, Fleury, Holik or Kasparitis…. Great players!…. until they joined the Rangers. With very little team chemistry, the NYR brass firing off the high priced talent in what looks like a restructuring effort to accept Crosby and all the true fans screaming about a rigged draft, we’ll see how well the kid can play at this level under instant pressure.

2nd Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs: Jack Johnson

Definetly Toronto #2. I’m not a TML fan, but let’s face it: TML fans can be, at times, rabid salivating little Tie Domi’s where if you try to step in you have previous victims yelling “Don’t shoot them, you’ll just make them mad! Those bullets better be silver or they’re not going down!” So, how do shut them up? Give them #2 pick and let them take a much needed future franchise defensmen. It significantly helps to shore up there defense (not totally… but it helps) letting the Leafs sign more up front talent and due to the fact that they don’t have to worry about their backend as much.

3rd Pick, 4th pick and 5th pick are interchangeable between Ottawa, Philadelphia and Montreal. They will take Benoit Poulet, Bobby Ryan and Anje Kopitar respectively. The order doesn’t matter. The reasons mirror the reasons for the leafs… shut the fans up from screaming foul. The league will have to play it safe with these three because it may be too many canadian teams (except for Philly) in the top five, but hey, if you are going to jump, why not leap. Ottawa or Montreal could be kicked to a much lower pick because you know at number 6 is:

6th pick: Vancouver Canucks: Gilbert Brule

Great marketing ploy here. Vancouver fans are often synonimus with Toronto fans so what better way to shut them up then giving them a top 10 pick from the same town. All the fans who left the NHL to go to the WHL and grew to love Brule will then, theoretically, follow him back to the NHL. I am a Vancouver fan. This would work on me. Does that make me a bad person? Plus Gilbert Brule plays Vancouver hockey. They may move this pick up to no more than fourth, but once again they have to worry about having too many canadian teams get top 5.

After that, to be honest, it doesn’t matter as much.

But wait! You say. What about Calgary and Edmonton? They have huge and loud fan bases?

True, but Calgary just recently made it to the finals so there is no real need to throw them a bone and Edmonton? I have never known Edmonton fans to be vehemouthly, rabidly loud. They cheer for the team but when the going gets tough, the tough (and Edmonton is a tough town) wait patiently for their chance next year.

If I know Edmonton fans the NHL could give them 30th pick and barely lose the passion for the game that is up there.

One of the other 3 ball teams will get top 10 honours and the Dallas stars will use whatever pick they get to sign Stone Cold Steve Austin… Hey, if the draft is rigged is this far behind? On a plus side we get to see him sneak a steel folding chair from under the players bench and hit one of the referees.

It’s all about marketing the game. And speaking of marketing the game go to Sportsnet.ca and check the picture of Gretzky’s daughter….. whoa! Definetly another great one. The NHL should advertise her….

  17. simplyhabby says:

Does anyone find it stange that they are going to announce the results from 30 to 1 meaning they will have to pick the balls behind closed doors?

Is it just me but is there something fishy going on here that they want the new poster boy to be on broadway to save the league….maybe a little fixing for the beenfit of the league?

  18. Scruffy05 says:

    … simply wow…

  19. TheCoach says:

Unfortunately, we traded our 2nd rounder.

    So it’d be 30 and 90.

  20. 19Yzerman says:

Pavel Bure? I have heard he is a famous warrior who lead the Russian tribe known as the SlapaHoe’s. Often imitated by to notorious Sergi Federov by the switching of the tribe’s best Hoe the hot looking Anna with her skimpy outfits she is reputed to be able to whack balls very well. As the SlapaHoe tribe ventured its exploration into the west they would present all confrontations with other tribe leaders the services of the Hot Anna who became legendary throughout the land and was known better the the Grand Canyon or the Rocky Mountains for her peaks and valleys.

Anybody who thinks I am serious with this “May be one of the Hot Anna’s and some tribe leader’s offspring”

  21. 19Yzerman says:

I suppose its only fitting that a draft which follows a cancelled season would be held in a concealed way. Now that the NHL appears to be getting close to establishing an agreement with its players Bettman has been searching for a new way to screw the fans. Who ever stole Bettman’s riddlin or adderhol bottle please return it to him. What is next in Bettman’s bag of tricks to screw the fans? Well I will tell you now that he is going to hold the Stanley Cup finals series on neutral ice behind closed doors and will announce game results after there is a series winner which won’t be the leafs but, should have.

If you think it would be a shame if Crosby ended up on a low market team like Buffalo or Carolina then I would say that Bettman agrees with you because how the league thrives from here on under his new and much costly to everyone CBA of cost certainty will be under the Microscope now. So that would be a motive to defy fate and “RIGG A LOTTERY”‘.

I don’t know that we can view the being behind closed doors as evidence of a “RIGGED LOTTERY”‘ if it has never been held publicly or televised before but, what is the purpose for the announcement of each teams draft selection not to be done as it has been done in the past? Please tell me that some much overpaid pencil neck didn’t discover that the TV Networks could get some good ratings by doing something unconventional to draw extra attention to this.

    we have seen

No one seens to know of the Whereabouts of Jimmy Hoffa

    Wondered “Who shot JR”

    and now this?

  22. 19Yzerman says:

    Oh NOOOOO!!!

    They would never do that!!

Risk going to jail and comprimse the integrity of the league for the over all benefit of the league?

I thought that was what the new CBA was designed to do?

Is there some concern the new CBA will still need help of this nature?

  23. ranger_fan says:

    OUCH Never mind then…LOW NUMBER!

I like Ottawa, they are the second team because I live close enough were I can head up to the Corel Centre a few times a year.

  24. ranger_fan says:

LA will get #2, its the second best NHL market in the US. Chicago will get a good one, and Columbus and Florida will be ahead of the Leafs. The NHL gets enough out Canada, everyone loves hockey and will support it. The only exception might be northern Quebec, as I saw on CBC that most have turned to what is an old time hockey league, kinda like the Iron League.

  25. JCnflies says:

    A few things to consider:

    1) The owners just had a lock out for LEAGUE success.

    2) The players get more money if the LEAGUE gets more money.

    3) Some of, if not the very, best LEAGUE GROWTH occured during Gretzky’s LA run and Messier’s Ranger run.

    4) Everyone involved wants money.

    5) The LEAGUE is desperate for positive ink and for reasons for people to spend money NOW so losses can be recouped.

Crosby should go to a big market team. Being a Ranger fan, I hope the Rangers get him. But Chicago, LA or the like would be good for the LEAGUE, too. Considering Madison Ave. Publicity is in NYC and the fit just seems economically right, it is in the best interests og the LEAGUe to put Crosby in NY. If they can unify through a lockout, they can work through this.

Then again, it could be nothing more than the typical luckless rationalizations of a long time Ranger fan.

  26. habs_punk says:

That’s one of the last places Bettman wants Crosby to be. He wants Sidney somewhere in the states, and in a large market. Somewhere that they can really market the hell out of him. Sidney will not help the NHL bring fans back if he’s playing anywhere in Canada, or in a place like Carolina where there’s no fans. He’s going to be in NYC.

  27. wheresthesoda says:

I gotta say as a rangers fan i get affended by people thinking that when crosby ends up in NY, he’s gonna be horrible. Nobody ever thinks about the good players that have come out of NY, like Leetch, Richter and even Kovalev was developed as a ranger, those guys have been premimium players….wutever, as long as crosby is the next great player to come out of new york, im happy

  28. Beerios says:

who is the #1 NHL market in the US?

  29. harry1616 says:

i dont think the rangers will have 3 balls because its going backwards it will be like this.

    4 teams got 3 balls and 10 have 2 and 16 with 1

from the 30th pick down to the 14th pick all the teams with 1 ball will have 3 and teams with 3 originally will have one. from the picks 14 to 4 the teams with 2 balls originally will have 3 and teams with 1 originally will have 2, and 3 originally have 1 each. then when the 4th gets picked the order goes back to original.

  30. NYRules says:

what the hell is going on?

  31. NYRules says:

dont forget who framed roger rabbit

  32. ranger_fan says:

#1 market anywhere in the US is NYC.

  33. Scruffy05 says:

Canucks fans… Wanna piss off a Canucks fan? Mention Bure….:P

  34. Scruffy05 says:

I believe you will see a lot of high Canadian pick to stop us from exposing the draft as a fake. That’s why the leafs second because they will be some of the loudest screaming that the draft was a farce.

  35. ranger_fan says:

I doubt it will be #2, unless it is Calgary or Edmonton. I think Toronto at best would get 4th or 5th, so it is still a great pick.

  36. NemiNA says:

That sucks. Their site kicks ass.

  37. 19Yzerman says:

    Oh yes!

    How could I forget?

I just remembered I forgot Mystery Alaska.

I wonder who the town mayor is getting along with his wife after having realations with that guy named Skank.LOL

  38. rc21pa says:

The draft can be behind a vault door in the US mint and it doesn’t mean a thing. The Pittsburgh Penguins have the first pick of the draft and If he doesn’t leave there a Penguin it’s because someone traded a roster of stars and maintained their salary.

Face it. It’s going to be a dream for many and a nightmare for some. As for the Rangers, they won’t get Crosby even if they give Jagr back and flip the bill. And if the Pens even consider this I would disown them.
