The prospect of the Olympic roster freeze at midnight February 12th is expected to spark a trade or two before then; however multiple NHL sources describe the current state of trade discussions as ‘very quiet.’ That said the potential list of players available is growing on a daily basis. Here are the top 10 players expected to be dealt on, or before the March 3rd NHL trade deadline.

1) Ilya Kovalchuk

2) Ray Whitney

3) Peter Mueller

4) Matt Stajan

5) Alexei Ponikarovsky

6) Matt Cullen

7) Lubomir Visnovsky

8) Sheldon Souray

9) Ethan Moreau

10) Marty Turco

There appears to be more buyers than sellers as we creep closer to the deadline, however that could change over the next few weeks as teams get a final reading on their post-season chances.

With Dean Lombardi calling out MU and the coaching staff it seems there may an issue with Jack Johnson. Johnson is a great talent and is in his young 20's.

I know Brian Burke has come out and said that he won't trade Kaberle, but with LA on the verge of being a playoff contender maybe a possible swap could help both teams.

LA would acquire a top d-man to play alongside Doughty on the PP and Kaberle's skill would help the Kings more so than the Leafs at this point.

Not quite sure how the details would work but I'm assuming a straight swap wouldn't be the deal.

  2. reinjosh says:

I wouldn't really believe what Burke says. He has been known to state things simply to throw people off.
I would agree that Kaberle is a viable option for LA and they will pursue him. I think that Pittsburgh will (though in the offseason), Boston will (I know bbruins disagrees, but so many other bruins fans i know agree with me), Washington might, Vancouver could.

  3. nordiques100 says:

with the draft being in LA, one can assume they will NOT part with their first round pick in any trade.

thats why i see it unlikely the kings do anything monsterous.

  4. Tavares-Stamkos14 says:

what does everyone think about a trade between the leafs and the preds involving Niklas Hagman + going to Nashville for Ryan Ellis+. The preds were in on Kessel at the end of the summer and well Hagman is playing better then Kessel and Ryan Ellis would kinda give the leafs someone to fall back on in the future if Kaberle is traded. Thoughts?

  5. reinjosh says:

They are pretty high on Ellis, so that likely wont be a part of trade if one happened.
Blum is more likely, and maybe one of there goalies (Pickard would be nice but they also like him a lot) or a first along with BLum

  6. dumbassdoorman says:

I think you may have to consider a trade like that……especially since his aquisition would help offset the Kessel trade.

  7. Kramer says:

Food and women. The best way to lure good players.

  8. reinjosh says:

Apparently LA has actually made an offer for Kovalchuk. Obviously it was turned down. (A writer who was hired by them, to write FOR them actually confirmed it)
Apparently Stoll is a part of the offer and/or counter offer.
Johnson is apparently being asked for but Lombardi is refusing and also refuses to add Simmonds (who is playing really well).
    Could be interesting.

  9. DJTOKid says:

Why isn't Lee Stempniak on that list??? The Leafs absolutely have to trade Stajan, Ponikarovsky, and Stempniak. I don't care for what aslong as its not salary. It's gotta be picks but 3rd, 4ths, or 5ths even a 6th for any of these guys would be great. They better not be back next year so no sense in keeping them around any longer.

Burke HAS….HAAAAAAS to trade Kaberle. He has to get back some of the youth he gave up in the Kessel deal. Whether it be a 2010 or 2011 first round pick or a prospect who was a first round pick i.e. Hodgson, Schenn, or Johnson. What I would like to see is Burke swing a deal with the canucks for Cory Schnieder. American goalie who is nhl ready, him and Gustavsson would be a decent tandom to start with.

This trade deadline and off season should be the biggest transition in the Burke era. Alot of guys have to go, the only two that are gonna hurt for abit are Blake and Finger, the Leafs won`t succced until those contracts are gone.

I would like to see Burke go after Patrick Sharp, Andrew Ladd, Eric Fehr, Alex Frolov, Tom Plekanec, and Matt lombardi either through trade or signing in the offseason

  10. mojo19 says:

How about picking up a bigger salary like Lupul or Malone who could be had for less than value because of their salaries.

The Sharks should be pressed right up agains the cap too, what about making a play for Setogucchi or Pavelski? Both are RFA. Hjalmersson in Chicago is RFA too. Bobby Ryan could have a contract dispute in Anaheim which could make him available, or prompt Anaheim to move the aforementioned Lupul, or possibly JS Giguere for next to nothing.

    Lots going on out there.

  11. Gryphon says:

Would a trade between Montreal and Toronto ever be possible? I mean they're the biggest rivalry in the NHL and they're both in the same division, but I would still love to see Halak in a Leaf uniform. Gustavsson and Halak would be a great 1, 2 punch. It would never happen though, am I right?

  12. mojo19 says:

Well, I'm a huge Niklas Hagman fan. Like I've been saying all year, I would make it priority to keep him. He's one of the few Leafs who has been really good this year, and would look good moving forward with him.

That being said, obviously since he's been scoring a lot this season and playing so well, he's going to be one of the few leafs with legit trade value. If we could bring in a 1st round pick (not belonging to Pitty, Wash, NJ, SJ, or Chi) then I would move him. Or if we could bring in a high end prospect like a Ryan Ellis calibre guy, I think you have to consider moving Hagman.

  13. mojo19 says:

I think it would be unlikely.

Don't worry about Halak, we will be able to get a solid goalie this offseason. Brian Burke is huge into having solid goaltending, so he won't stand for this again. He said that after Cloutier cost him a 2-0 series lead vs the Red Wings in 2002, that he would always make sure he had good goaltending.

So I would guess that 'tending is the top priority that Burke will address.

  14. Gryphon says:

    Well put. 100% agree.

  15. reinjosh says:

yeah me too. I have been since he joined the leafs. And its not like he is just getting lucky with the goal scoring or this is just a flash in the pan thing. This is his third consecutive 20 plus goal season. He would have been a 3 time 25 plus goal scorer barring injuries last year (and if he reaches it this year). And the thing so many people forget or willfully ignore, is that he is playing against teams top defenders. Its not as if he is getting the easy players. When your team has only two major threats for scoring, they tend to get shadowed a lot.
He is definitely worth keeping and only worth moving if someone pays a significant price (like a first and a mid prospect or a high end prospect).

  16. mojo19 says:

No you're totally right. And you can tell this guy is a goal scorer by the way he scores most of his goals, from the top of the circle, or face off dot, or a bit tighter, with a wicked wrist shot.

  17. JoelJoel says:

Why would Stempniak have to go? Trade away youth to regain youth?

Also, Stajan and Poni won't fetch a 4th or 5th or 6th. Infact, a 3rd is likely far too little for either of them.

  18. popkumdan says:

As i recall the Oilers tried that with Pronger…

Too many women and his wife wanted a trade

  19. Tavares-Stamkos14 says:

I agree completely i am a big fan of Hagman and i would love to keep him just what i was thinking before is that we are probly going to be trading kaberle at some point and who else besides maybe Ian White can carry the puck even remotely close to kaberle? Thats why i thought of this trade because its not like Nashville is hurtin on defence. They have Shea Weber, Ryan Suter and Dan Hamhuis leading the way and if you ask me thats a good top 3. Weber and Hamhuis got invited to the canadian orientation camp and weber made it. Suter if im not mistaken made the US team. Plus the fact of klein, Blum and the top Swiss defender at the world juniors they have Roman Josi. Watched him when canada played switzlerland he is a Ryan Ellis type player, moves the puck well a powerplay guy. I think nashville could spare a defence prospect for a 20+ goal scorer. Ellis would if development goes right replace Kaberle. Even add Stajan or Poni and maybe Nashville throws in Gabriel Bourque. Because they have Colin Wilson so there is less of a need for Bourque plus they get anotehr 20+ goal scorer. Heres my thought:

To Tor: Ryan Ellis and Gabriel Bourque
To Nash: Niklas Hagman and Matt Stajan

  20. broc says:

Ellis isn't going to have the same success in the NHL as he has in junior. Look at Russel in Columbus.

Ellis will be a smaller, poor mans Bryan Berard. Good for the powerplay, and nothing else. He is too small, and his speed is seriously slow. The Leafs give up enough goals as it is.

  21. KingCanada says:

Well the list is the 10 most likely to move…not all potential UFA rentals lol.

Both Poni and Stajan outscore Stempniak by a fair margin and come at a cheaper cap hit and are both MUCH cheaper in actual salary.  Thats not to say he wont get traded…he is just less likely then those guys.

  22. KingCanada says:

Well its not like its impossible…it did happen in the recent past when the Habs sent us Grabovski for a 2nd and prospect (Greg Pateryn).

But in THIS situation I doubt the Habs even entertain the option of flipping Halak (or Price for that matter) to their divisional rival.

I think trading a goaltender to a rival can haunt u much more in the future then a regular skater.

    example: Tuukka Rask….

  23. mojo19 says:

interesting assesment on Ellis. He went pretty high as a 1st rounder, so obviously scouts and NHL GM's think pretty highly of him. On the other hand, statistically speaking most 1st round picks do not become star players so you'll probably be right about Ellis.

  24. mojo19 says:

We need young studs who aren't tied down by women. Think Patrick Kane.

  25. mojo19 says:

Its true. For some reason I just have this feeling that we'll end up with Chris Mason from St.Louis…. call it a hunch. I'm hoping for a Turco on like a 2 year deal or something and have him mentor the Monster.

  26. KingCanada says:

Ya having Turco would be great, he can have Toskala's cap space at 4 million lol.
